First off, i am trying to figure out what causes my temp folder to move from AppData\Local\Temp to AppData\Local\Temp\1. When i log out and log back in, then it becomes AppData\Local\Temp\2. Secondly, the AppData\Local\Temp\1 folder has strange permissions, where it has these users and groups listed: NULL SID Everyone SYSTEM CREATOR OWNER CREATOR GROUP each item has 0 permssions. Lastly, my app trys to write to this folder using C++ ::CopyFile. It crashes rather than returning fasle. Thanks for any suggestions. Nick Bauer

I've used many anti-virus software and this is the current one I'm using. Does anyone know how well this works compared to others? I won't touch Norton. I also have windows defender. What are the best programs to use to protect a home-user computer that don't interfere with each other? Thanks - Kristy

Permissions issue
by Guest abinkow- 6 replies

I have a program that installs as a subfolder of the Program Files (x86) folder. Inside the main folder of the application is a file, SpecDat.xxx. The application, when run, needs to change this file. If I run this application from an administrator account, it comes back with a Error '53': File Not Found error. After some extended debugging by both me and the author, we discovered it wasn't updating this file. When I tried to update this file manually using Notepad, Notepad wouldn't save it either. After more research, I ran the application by right-clicking and selecting "run as an administrator". Now it works, even though I'm always running it f…

Nonstop updates messages at shutdown
by Guest MauryS- 1 reply

For several weeks now I have had a message that updates are available when I go to shut down my machine. But I don't see an update notice in the system tray. The shutdown message appears even if I check immediately after starting the computer. It always says it is installing 1 update of 1. I'm on Win XP sp3 and have McAfee running and both McAfee and Windows are set for automatic updates. I'm seeing no other indication of problems. Anyone have an idea of what's up? Thanks

Cannot save to mapped drive
by Guest Jeff Ingman- 0 replies

I have a drive mapped to a folder on my hard. If I navigate directly to this folder I can open a doc, change it and file it back to the same location. I have mapped access to the same folder as drive "X". When I access the very same file via the mapped drive I cannot save back to the same location. When I look at the permissions tab I do not see any reason I could not save to this folder. How to fix? By the way... this folder is in my "Public" folder and I have mapped access to it for my wife's computer. I have set full read write access for her in this folder but she cannot make changes using either the mapped drive on her computer or by navigating…

RE: Defender and McAfee question
by Guest Milo- 0 replies

Well it can work together since the scan engine of Defender is limited to some extent ( regular malware ) in which mcafee can compensate ( to deal with some more complexed malicious files like PE infectors and others ) also Mcafee has a separate engine. The only rule of the thumb no 2 antivirus is advised to run because it can mess up the process capability of the system -- Milo "JS" wrote: <span style="color:blue"> > On Vista, I have McAfee av installed. More "Destination Folder Access Denied" buffoonery
by Guest headbanger51- 0 replies

Hello all. I've read through all the sections on this forum that deal with this problem and I cannot resolve it. I've also read through the tutorials posted by Brink on setting UAC levels via the Local Security Policy and still no dice. Very simple problem: I downloaded iTunes installer for 64-bit systems as well as the Quicktime installer. Neither would work (another story for another thread I suppose) so I wanted to delete them. That's when I get the infamous "Destination folder access denied" nonsense. The files are in my user account folder that is on the desktop. I'm running Vista Ultimate and computer is less than two weeks old. I made sure to cha…

Having problems with avg8.5 Free

If there is a more appropriate newsgroup for this I couldn't find one -- if so just advise me where else I can post it, and thanks. WINXP SP2 IE7 Ever since I updated avgfree from v.7.5 to 8.5, the process avgcsrvx.exe, especially at bootup and offline, takes up to 98% of my CPU. I posted to the avgfree forum, followed ALL the suggestions/instructions of the moderators there, it seemed to lessen after days of trying everything logical and now it is taking up all my CPU for up to 15 minutes after bootup again. The way it seemed to correct before was something in the middle of system restoring, dis/enabling, reconfiguring preferences, and alignment of t…

Earlier I Googled "Samsung 2053bw" and flitted through some web sites, spending a couple sof minutes, reading reviews, on several of them, ....then quit IE7 and went into the house for a coffee, and came back out here to my little office to find a small IE7 pop-out window displaying a roulette wheel from www.888.com So I shot straight off to my etc directory to find that my regualarlyy updated hosts file from http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm had vanished, rather/or, had been renamed to hosts.bak ! ...and that's happened a couple of time during the past few months ! So, annoyingly, I can't pin down which web site took that particular libe…

I opened AdaWare and hit "update" I do not know how but after downloading the definitions I ended up with Malrware and remember I used AdaWare to update the definitions. Would REALLY like advice on this. This infected both my machines that I use. But I did have a disk image (all though it was 5 months old) and now have both machine up and running. I do not want to install AdaWare after what happened. I am looking for a alternative pr…
