Access to folders
by Guest Rick- 5 replies

I recently purchased a new laptop with Vista on it, and I continue to be frustrated by the layers of security I have to constantly wade through. I am the owner, administrator and sole user of this computer. It is used in my home and is not part of any LAN. Yet even though I am the administrator and only user, I still have to give myself permission before I can do certain things or run certain programs. Is there any quick and easy way I can change a setting somewhere so that I don't have to constantly give myself permission to do various things? Also, I have managed to change the security settings on various folders by going into Properties so that I…

Re: Pano Stand Alone

I received the "Windows Installer looking for pano stand alone please insert CD ROM etc. In another forum I found a post suggesting that it was part of HP Image software so I found the original software disc that came with my HP laptop and inserted the disc "HP Image Zone Plus" and windows found it on the disc and cleared the error. It was a real problem because windows wouldn't shut down with out it. -- mmh449 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ mmh449's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/96082.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/security-virus/610946.htm http://forums.techarena.in

hi i bought a laptop acer aspire 4930g before six months. it previously contained the mcafee antivirus as the security. so i was ok then. now it is asking me to renew the mcafee. but i want to put avg. i can not put avg without uninstalling the mcafee. now i am having trouble deciding that what should i do. which is the better ? can i remove the preinstalled mcafee for avg ? because i am getting avg for free. will avg do the same job ? may be mcafee was giving the full protection and avg may not give the same? i am using windows vista premium. please tell me that if it is ok to install avg and remove the mcafee for the full internet security. -- niraja…

I love Spyware and Adware!
by Guest Justin- 8 replies

Running Windows XP my cousin ended up with an infestation of spyware and adware after AVG ran out and it stopped updating. I installed AVG 8.5 ran a scan, it disinfected winlogon.exe and then blue screened. After a reboot and another scan winlogon.exe was no longer infected but other files were. It seems to have disinfected them. The only thing left is a popup that comes up everytime IE is started. I can't figure out what is causing it. I ran ad aware - it disposed of a few things but he still gets that popup when IE starts. What now?

Who gets security updates?

[X-post to Windows Update, Security, and Security Home Users newsgroups as an FYI] <QP> There seems to be a myth that Microsoft limits security updates to genuine Windows users. Let me be clear: all security updates go to all users. </QP> http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windowsse...ty-updates.aspx -- ~PA Bear

Windows Defender Error and Admin Error
by Guest sommer- 1 reply

Not even a week ago I ran into an issue where I wasn't able to run a .exe program it tells me it can't access the files. Then when I tried to log into the admin it tells me it can't load the profile. When I try to run a scan to see if there are issues, I get an error. So I can't log into admin, can't update defender, and can't load programs most of the time. Is there any fix? -- sommer

Bitlocker and cracked logons
by Guest DWalker07- 5 replies
Bitlocker and Bitlocker for Windows 7 are supposed to be great at preventing stolen disks or stolen computers from having their disks compromised by being installed in another computer (or by booting the computer with another OS). But, if you steal a computer, there are lots of tools on the 'net that will crack logon passwords. How does Bitlocker help in these situations? If someone can crack the logon password, then they are the person that the BitLocker disks are decrypted for. Any information would be appreciated. (I am currently using a third-party decryption tool that requires me to enter the passkey every time I mount the disk.) David W…

Windows live one care safety scanner
by Guest Andlie Coll- 5 replies

I have used the online windows live one care safety scanner (beta version for Vista) a couple of times and found it rather useful. (I have not subscribed to it but it says it is a free online service that you can go back and use any time you want) I added it to my favourites but when I go to it now it will not launch the scanner. It prompts me to download the safety scanner testtesttest which I do (although it is already sitting in my programs list from the previous times using it) then it invites me to launch scanner and when I do it returns to the page prompting me to install the safety scanner. Round and round it goes. I would appreciate any help or sug…

Weird problem with SSPI
by Guest Kasparov- 0 replies

I am facing a weird problem. Any pointers are much appreciated. I am using SSPI for authentication on Windows 2003 machine. On my server side I am checking whether my SSPI context user is part of the backup operators (BO) group. Now the check always returns me false even though the user is present in the BO group on that machine. Strange thing is if I do logonuser using the same username and password (with which the client is running) on the server side and try to check whether the logon user token is part of the BO group it returns me TRUE ! Have also tried with administrator group but there the functionality is as expected (both the times it returns me true…

Re-enabling Local Administrator Account
by Guest Jon CC- 2 replies

Hi In need of urgent help. Have a friend running SBS 2008 whereby they recently changed support and in doing so the new Admin disabled two accounts (the main Admin account and the Backup Admin account) thinking they were unneccesary accounts only to then realise the two accounts were the only Administrator accounts. Apart from two Client profile accounts these were the only four accounts created out of the box when the SBS was installed. Subsequently no one can currently log onto the SBS Server as the only two accounts that had log on rights to the Server have been disabled. Is there anyway of re-enabling the Admin accounts to regain control of the S…

Thank you in advance for any guidance! style_emoticons/ Vista Ultimate (32bit SP1) system is corrupted enough to not boot but accessing the HD from another system seems to have virtually everything intact. One single file was encrypted using EFS on the system. I'm wondering if there is a way to manually transfer over the certificate/s from the old hard drive into the new system. I am aware of ElcomSoft's Advanced EFS Data Recovery software but the problem is that the file that is encrypted is actually another file that is encrypted using another encrypted software (basically the file is encrypted twice, the outside container is Vista EFS and the inside conta…
