Re: UAC/Run as Administrator Issue

I meant that Im getting the usual... 'need permission' to run... Though initially I only had a handful of apps (3), now its more than twice as many. Almost all of them are VISTA compatiable, though some were previously xp and got updated before I went vista. -- VIsta Home Premimum - (Sp1, 64bit). Boinc (latest version) - Along with many apps that are part of VISTA that constantly ask permission, and will always be 'yes' no matter what.. It seems stupid that many of the apps are asking permission when they themselves are part of the system and easily part of what would be automatically always yes and will never be 'not run'. The msg, is not really …

Backup/Restore program (s), etc/misc info;
by Guest http://www.jeffreydavidmorris.co- 2 replies

Hello all. I was using the NTBackup utility to back up (yeah, backup all on computer); BUT, when and if I need to restore, from a external backup drive (that I do not keep plugged into the back of my desktop tower/chassis, but only solely when I need to add something to the external drive or whatever, you know) It's 100GB, My tower/chassis's internal drive is: 120GB, and my thinking is that I can not solely rely on just one back/restore program; I gotta have two, just in case one doesn't work or (?). Thus, I've copy and pasted text (below) from a read out copy of my PC ("Belarc"), which of course I know, only shows what's on a pc and I wanted to share it w…

Error adding MisConfig - startup - new entry of something I need to startup; nevermind what it is, just that I moved mouse over on the right hand side, right clicked, saw new, went to String Value, went to type in new name and it said I couldn't; plus, all the permissions are set to me, it's a home pc, thus, how else can I add something to MisConfig - startup I need to startup? Thank you in advance. Yeah well, it ain't happening . . . thus, don't know what else it could be, or that I'm doing wrong or something with my setup or (?); everything should be fine on pc, but I need to add something to (either) hklm or hklu - software\microsoft\windows\currentvers…

Windows Vista Basic sp1. Im using a 3rd party firewall program. In Administrative Tools---Services it shows Windows Firewall status as Started. But, in Security Center it shows my 3rd party firewall being On but Windows Firewall being off. Also, in Administrative Tools---Windows Firewall with Advanced Security is showing Windows Firewall being on in Domain Profile. Is this normal? Why would one show Windows Firewall as On and another show it as Off??? James

? about HOSTS files
by Guest Jesse- 4 replies

Could someone please clarify why whenever I open the "view HOST file" in WinPatrol I get a text list hundreds of nasty malwares? It says "127.0.0.1, local host" "#start of lines added by WinHelp2002", then the list., ending with "#end of lines added by WinHelp2002". .. How do you interpret this -- is this a list of blocked HOSTS or something? Thank you, Jesse

Vista IPSec Issue
by Guest cyberwatchers- 1 reply

I run domain enviornment from a 2003 domain controller. The machines are XP and Vista machines. I have folder redirection going to a machine running Vista Enterprise. I decided to secure the data to and from that machine using IPSec. This works especially nice due to laptop users and the WiFi. I am running any any for the DC so policy and what have you works fine. (between machines and the Domain Controller) "Require Security" with Authentication being Kerberos of course since all machines in question are joined to the domain. (between machines and the file server) I setup IPSec using Group Policy and all the machines are in the same group. The filter…

Is there a way to protect W2003 AD Domain Admin & Administrator Groups so existing members cannot add other users to these groups ? I only want our Enterprise Admins group to have change rights to these groups. I have tested Created OU- Test, Removed write permission for domain admins on this Test OU. Blocked inheritance with exception of Enterprise Admins Then moved Domainadmin group to this OU, Removed write permission and removed self as member for this group But after 1 hr all the settings are rolled back.. If this is not possible and Micirsift does not recommend this can you point me to MS Documentation I need to show our auditors th…

Remote permissions?
by Guest Bill- 6 replies

I have 3 computers that log onto a Server 2003 SBS system that serves as a domain controller. Each of those 3 computers have LogMeIn installed and all work with that perfectly when the server is bypassed, i.e., when connected directly to a router via DHCP. When I attempt to connect to any one of them from outside the domain, I get 4320 error: The operator or administrator has refused the request. (4320) I assume it is the server that blocks the access, but I can't find anywhere on the server where settings are provided to allow access to computers connected to the server. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bill

Defender disabling
by Guest AliceZ- 9 replies

I have to install AVG and they mention that Defender should be disabled. I have Vista Premium and when I searched the Internet for instructions on how to turn off the Defender, I am told to go to Defender and click on Tools and then Options and then go to: Administrator options. Deselect the Use Windows Defender box and press the Save button. My Options does not have Administrator Options at bottom (nor Use Windows Defender box). My Options has two categories: Automatic scanning AND Default actions. #1- Why don't I see/have "Administrator Options? #2- And, how can I disable Defender prior to installing AVG? Thank you. Alice

"You need permission to perform this action" insanity
by Guest Oliver Costich- 10 replies

I just upgraded to Vista x64 from x86 XP and trying to do certain things is driving me nuts. I have a couple of folders I want to delete. They are not system related. In fact they are part of Adobe Acrobat 8. When I try to delete them I get "You need permission to perform this action". Here's what I have tried so far: UAC is off. Right clicking the folder and giving full control on the security tab Using the hidden administrator account (net user administrator /active:yes in cmd run as administrator) I have been through numerous Google searchesand found nothing useful. Surely this can be fixed somehow but it apparently isn't easy. HELP!!

UAC prevents Norton installation
by Guest Zoe- 12 replies

I have Vista Home Premium, and I'm trying to install Norton Internet Security 2009, which I downloaded from the website. The problem is that even when I tell User Account Control to allow the install program to run, nothing happens. I contacted Symantec about it, but all they said was that the user control policy is not allowing the installation to run and that I should contact Microsoft about how to fix it so the program can run. How do I do that? Thanks.

Resources to check on, re: ntbackup not restoring previous (way) pc was, ie: Windows Live OneCare backup, which I don't have, use to have, nbut never the less), I don't mind using ntbackup, which I believe does the job, but it's the store feature that doesn't restore (post) looking ove pc, you know; too much/vast to go into, just know I need to inquire on is it something I'm doing, something the program is doing or doesn't do, is it something else. I just need a short, sweet and to the point (idea), to start with, toget my thinking going, and then I can check or start trying to try some solutions. Thank you in advance. The backup and restore do perform, an…

by Guest timb- 13 replies

OK Now Folks... this is the most peculiar situation I've encountered to date with Visa/IE... Here's what I've done and here's what's going on... I'm trying to access NOAA radars with IE7. NOAA radars are Java applets... An example can be found here: http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=PBZ...101111&loop=yes I updated Java to 1.6U7 and applets have subsequently failed... so I... Uninstalled all versions of Java Deleted the Java folder under Program Files Reset ALL of IE7 to defaults... inlcuding the master reset to defaults (made sure activex controls, jre, etc. we're reenabled) Rebooted Downloaded and installed JRE 1.6U7 using the manual java inst…

Hi, I need to be able to set the Local Software Restrictions policy in Windows2K3 from within a batch file. Can anyone advise me of a command line tool that can do this? Alternatively, a method of importing? At a last resort, where is it stored in the registry? Thanks :-)
