how do I find my default vista username
by Guest oooiooo- 9 replies

how do I find my default vista username. My problem is that I have a legal copy of goldmine 5.7 that I installed on this new laptop. In the installation there was a screen to type in my username and passord to access goldmine in the future....and I left them both blank. Now i cannot get into my goldmine program and when I uninstall it and reinstall it... it does not give me the opportunity to pick a new username and password. Vista has stored some default username (assumed) How do I find out what it is? Any help is greatly appreciated because I have lots of info on goldmine and I cant get in -- oooiooo Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com

Re: VISTA - IE7 SECURITY CERTIFICATE ERROR
by Guest jimcoufal- 0 replies

The same thing has happened to me after Microsoft sent Windows Defender updates on March 17th. Mine is more complex. Windows defender disappeared and I cannot download it again from Microsoft since the computer will not validate any certificates, even from the Microsoft site. (I have a legitmate version of Vista Home Premium) Norton techs remotely verified that I do not have a virus (although the symptoms are similar to conficker). I can't download ANY software and many websites (AA.com, Microsoft.com, etc all now have certificate error). Although I can still enter the sites, I cannot use anything that requires form data (JAVA, etc) since it bombs and I see …

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool
by Guest Rama- 16 replies
Windows XP Professional; HP-Compaq Computer. Downloaded the Malicious Removal Tool from Microsoft website after my computer started shutting down suddenly when it is scanned either by anti-virus or Ad-Aware software. However, instead of removing the virus or whatever, this tool too is shutting down the computer like Ad-Aware or Anti-virus software. By shutting down, I mean, the computer is suddenly switched-off (not normal shutting down) and my monitor goes to sleep. If I try to start the computer within 30 minutes, it will close half way through booting. This confirms, I think, that my computer harbors a virus. Can someone tell me how to get rid of th…

Security Center Reporting No Antu-Virus Software
by Guest JamesJ- 21 replies

I just installed and-virus and firewall software but Vista Security Center reports no anti-virus software installed. The anti-virus software reports all is well. Also before installing this I turned off Windows Firewall but still noticed that Vista is reporting Windows Defender running and active. I thought Defender is the firewall. I must be mistaken. Thanks, James

Bypassing BitLocker in TPM-only (basic) mode...?
by Guest groffg- 4 replies
Anyone had any experience bypassing BitLocker (basic mode) using the recovery console (i.e., booting to the Windows DVD or rescue CD)? Based on the documentation, seems like it would work (provided BIOS is configured to boot to CD/DVD drive before the HDD). Having said that, would M$ allow such an obvious attack vector? I don't have a machine w/ a TPM right now, so I can't test this myself. Anyone tried this out? -- groffg Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com

Downloaded latest of Windows "important" updates. Now cannot access a website i regularly use; noticed the site is now listed in the restricted sites area. Problem is that when I try to highlight it and click "remove" from restricted sites area, the remove button will not activate/let me remove the site from the restricted sites zone. I have tried turning Protected Mode off. I do have the Windows Live toolbar. Am using IE ver 7.0. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Vista password
by Guest eskimopie- 2 replies

After a series of power outages, my Gateway Vista 64 is now asking for a password which was never set for user. Additionally there is no visible ability I can find to select a different user (admin?). Lastly I just tried a Vista 64 compatible password reset app which said it completed successfully, but after reboot it is again asking for password - what to do? I do not have password rescue disk because again no password was ever given to machine, it just started up and loaded as it should have until now. Help!? -- eskimopie Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com

My system is haunted!
by Guest BAL007- 5 replies

This is not a joke! I started to hear sporadically some music and voice on my PC, like if I was listening to a radio station; I have no such application on my system. When this is happening, only ordinary applications (like Outlook or Word) are running. Stopping all the applications does not make any difference. When it happens, I have noticed that a process called 17134.exe is running and is consuming quite a lot of memory space. At start-up of my system, the original memory space used by that process is around 2000K but when I start hearing the sounds, the amount of memory used is around 58000K and varying; it uses between 10 to 30% of CPU. If I stop th…

Server Perfromance Advisor
by Guest Kevin Gallagher- 0 replies

I am using Server Perfromance Advisor V2 to monitor System and Active Directory Perfromance. It allows me to use a network share to transfer data for reporting. It requires an account with admin level permissions to do this. Can anyone tell me if this negotiates securely or if I need to find some way to run it over SSL? It seems odd that it requires an ID and password for an admin level account but doesn't say how to secure this if you intend to use them. Any advice on SPA would be usefull.
