Stop C000021a Fatal System Error

Hello, Two days ago I logged onto my computer and received a security alert asking me to update my computer, I can't remember what it exactely said, but it appeared to be a Microsoft security update. I believe this was a virus. After I updated this, the computer restarted but there were no icons, no task bar, the screen was just the desktop picture. So I managed to use the Task Manager to bring up an Exployer page and downloaded Super Anti Spyware and ran a scan. Right when the virus was found, there were several trojans that were found, one of which is SVCHOST.exe, the computer would just restart. It did this every single time. I managed to download a a…

Where are the saved network credentials stored?
by Guest Gunna- 0 replies

I have a user who has a very locked down machine. They have at some point entered their username and password into a popup and clicked sav password. Now the password has changed but they cant access the run command or the control panel to clear those saved credentials. I can log on with my ID and have access to those commands but it of course only shows saved credentials for me not the other users. Without altering the group policy is there a place I can go to on the file system and delete where the credentials have been stored or maybe a registry key? Can I just wipe out their profile on the machine to do it?

possible worm?
by Guest ladibug- 1 reply

I have Service Pack 2 and Norton Antivirus/spyware. My subscription runs until 2010. Yesterday I was trying to run the antivirus scan. I could click on it and it acts like it will open, but then it doesn't. I came to Microsoft.com and tried to view my update history but got an error message. I then ran the OneCare scan overnight. It said it found 3 issues but fixed them. However, today I still cannot open the antivirus software and am still getting the update history error. Could this be a sign of worm infection?

x509 certs for Wyse terminals and printers

Additional post - is in General Discussion, but latterly found this NG Hey folks, I wonder what's the best way to go about creating certficates (from a Win2003 CA) for non-domain devices - Wyse terminals and printers? I guess I can create them from a WinXP client and import the pfx file onto the device, but would it need any more than that - a custom template or so? Cheers, Ferg.

Poor Security Measures Waste Time
by Guest Ricue- 6 replies

Hi, My story is complex please read it all before posting as my literary skills are lacking. I was just your average guy with XP looking to upgrade so I got the Vista Ultimate x32. I already knew that UAC while well meaning was not effective, so I turned that off after about 5 minutes and 30 dialog boxes. I also knew that Vista had the ability to download pretty much anything even with the security center's updates set to OFF, via BITS and wuaclt.exe. I saw evidence of this through Process Explorer. So I thought to myself, OK I deal with it and turned both services off from Process Explorer. Then they came back. I also turned off the services in the services.ex…

Malicious Software Removal Tool Full Scan
by Guest Dave- 2 replies

Hi, Curious if anyone can elaborate on what the MRT full scan encompasses. It obviously includes more than what's found in the file system on a volume yes? I'm wondering why the "files scanned" count is so high - does it scan every file inside archives/cabinets too? What else is considered a "file" in this context? Thanks! -- -Dave

More Global Whoami?
by Guest Bradley Plett- 0 replies
I am frequently logged into multiple domains, with mappings to multiple servers, and sometimes with various VPN connections running. Is there a tool (command-prompt utility?) that can list all the ways I am presently authenticated? "Whoami" and "System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent()" tell me my current "primary" user information. However, they do not tell me with which identity, for example, I have a drive mapped in a different domain, nor what account I used to log into a VPN. I'm sure there should be a simple way of getting this information, but I haven't found it yet. Any ideas? Thanks! Brad.

Backups in Vista: which files to delete?
by Guest TonyB- 2 replies
I'm running Vista Ultimate SP1 and using Windows Backup to an external HD every night. Initially it did a Complete PC Backup and is now doing daily backups of any files changed during the day. The problem is very simple: the external HD is getting full, so which backup (zip) files can I delete to make space? Are the backup files differential, ie increasing in size as they backup all files changed since that Complete Backup, so that I can delete all the files except the last one? Or are they incremential, ie each backup only contains the files changed since the last daily backup, so they all have to be kept? Many TIA, Tony.

Network Permissions
by Guest MichaelC- 1 reply

I have done much research on NTFS permissions and securing network shares and such and have a few questions I cannot find answers for. So I look to you for help style_emoticons/ In my current network setup, we have network shares on seperate drives from which the OS was installed (W2k3). On these drives, there are permissions that are allowing everyone to view and write data to areas they shouldnt be. I would rather not have everyone "list folder contents" as it is shown on the drive permissions and the Users group can create folders and append data. I want to know what are common best practices for root drives with network shares on them. Should I…

What would access a guest account?
by Guest Gary- 3 replies

I recently ran Belarc Advisor to verify some computer internals and saw that my guest account had a last login from two days prior. The guest account was never used and it was still set to off in User Accounts. Would a download or some MS update use that account to access the system? (Vista Home Basic SP1 with all updates).
