media constrictor needs to go
by Guest Jim Michaels- 3 replies

windows Vista is not safe for life-threatening medical imaging applications or good for communication because of the media constrictor. the media constrictor needs to go. I think it should leave windows 7 too. specifically, communications gets intentionally downgraded no matter the hardware, and imaging requires all Vista-certified hardware. I'm always looking over my shoulder wondering what OS they are using at my dentists' office. I know, it's not life-threatening. Jim Michaels

Software occasionally start itself at startup
by Guest ohanna- 7 replies

Hi! Could anyone please let me know if this sounds a like malware issue? I have a scanner connected to my laptop. Occasionally (about once every 15 times), the scanner's software (MP Navigator EX) starts up when I start my computer. Just this afternoon, when I restarted my computer, this program started itself, and did a scan as well. I restarted my machine 2 times and this program didn't start. I verified that this program has been disabled on my list of start up programs via msconfig. Does it sound like a hardware issue or malware issue? I've scanned my machine with a number of Anti-malware programs and nothing has been reported. I have Vista…

Hi All, I used the free ISO distributed of the Trinity Rescue Kit on my home computer, Vista Ultimate x32, as my daughter had been playing on it and had set "user must change password at next login" and "password does not expire". Anyway, after running the recover disk to elevate another user to the admin group to use it to reset this admin account, I can now no longer see any user in the admin group i.e. it is blank!!! You can add users, but as press the "Apply" button they disappear right in front of you. BTW, I forgot to turn system restore back on from a previous virus due to my daughter. Any idea as to how to do a registry restore of the hive keys.…

by Guest Diane P.- 6 replies

This morning, my PC did not boot properly.... My monitor and speaker system are turned on separately first. I then power up my tower; after that the cable modem and router. This morning, I went thru the above routine....monitor did not have anything on the screen, but I could see the led's on the tower all working. Nothing on the monitor. The light was blinking, but nothing. I powered down the entire system...everything. I turned everything back on; this time the system booted up, on the the bottom of POST, just after the system components show, the was a message that said "the system failed to boot several times. Hit F2 to reconfigure or to get int…

Security Templates and File System Security
by Guest Broonie- 0 replies

I've noticed that a lot of our domain PCs have screwed up permissions on the C:\ drive which are inhertited all the way down the file structure. I thought I would use the security templates for Vista (i'm running vista but there is a mix of vista and xp) in conjunction with the Security Analysis and Configuration and Security Templates tools fix the perms on my own PC. On looking at the templates (which i downloaded from the MS site along with the security guide) i noticed that none of them have any entries under the File System node. I was expecting to see entries for the root of the C:\ drive, the Windows directory etc such that I could reset my permissions …

Hello, I have been trying to research this "Serv-U" Virus, with the following aliases, to figure out how it infects servers and how to prevent it. We have a solution on how to remove the virus, we just need to know how it infects servers and how to prevent it. We consistantly see the infection only repeat on Virtual Servers with Windows Server 2003 Web Edition. not-a-virus:Server-FTP.Win32.Serv-U.5000 (Kaspersky Lab) is also known as: not-a-virus:RiskWare.FTP.Serv-U.5000 (Kaspersky Lab) Hacktool (Symantec) BackDoor.Servu.5000 (Doctor Web) Troj/ServU-Gen (Sophos) BDS/ServU.ba.1 (H+BEDV) Win32:Trojano-356 (ALWIL) Trojan.ServU.G (SOFTWIN) Trojan.Se…

I've installed this update several times and the update history shows the install as successful. Why does windows update continually list KB954430 as an important update? I assume the install actually failed for some reason. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Add to Ctrl Alt Del Menu
by Guest ToonBoon- 2 replies

Hi, I'm curently working on my final project for my IT course in school. What I need to do is create some sort of 'puzzle' for my classmates to solve. So what I was thinking of was adding a line, clickable or not, to the menu that pops up when you press Ctrl Alt Del. In that line I would like to have a text giving a hint or if it could be clickable opening a file to continue the puzzle. So I was wondering, is it possible to add a line of text (clickable or not) to the Ctrl Alt Del menu? If anyone could help me out on this by either saying that it can't be done or giving me a hint to what I need to do to accomplish this or just saying how I can do this I'd…

Additional Info - Vista and Conficker
by Guest DRK- 4 replies

An earlier thread mentioned the Conficker worm, how it is affecting Vista, and that the threat has changed. I have two symptoms of the worm - Windows Update no longer works (when I load it goes to a blank windows explorer screen, which I have force quit through Task Manager), and Windows Defender no longer works. I have used multiple Conficker removal tools (BD, F Smart, MS Removal) and none of these have found anything wrong. Any ideas if this is Conficker adapting or if its something else?

I write to inquire if MS will have an update for this threat? Not just a removal tool after the event? Much thanks in advance for an informed opinion.
