Windows Security Center window will not pop up
by Guest Lois Pack- 2 replies

Using Vista Home Premium Dell 1526 laptop. I found that the last major security update from Microsoft would not install. Working with Vista support, we found two catalog files that were corrupted. I had to re-install Vista from the Dell furnished disk. Microsoft Updates then downloaded and installed....all 206 Mb of them. However, now the security center will not come up. The process IS running (Task Manager shows...Windows Services shows). I have a warning icon on the taskbar as I am not using Windows Firewall, but Norton. Before, I could have the Security Center ignore the fact that Windows Firewall was not running...but can NOT now. No window …

Noticed a strange $29.95 charge on one of our credit cards, I check transactions daily online, the transaction had the web site www.fit-fac.com and # 866-407-1022. I went to the web site and it gave the same 800# and a form for disputing the charge. I called the 800# and told them I didn't make the charge, they guided me to another web site www.fitfactory.com giving me a user id and password to see if I could remember the site and gullibly I signed on and looked and told them no. I then insisted the my card be credited for the charge and they said they would do that. I felt uneasy so called the credit card company and told them of the situation and c…

Hi guys I have Windows Vista Home Premium loaded in my laptop. So far all is well until I turned it on today and attempted to log into my profile. On my computer, there are only two users set up - Mine (administrator) and Guest (limited access). While trying to access my own account, the systems says it is unable to access User Security System Profile.. or something along that line. Then it denied me access and subsequently the 'Logout' sign came on and it returned back to all the users selection. Last night, prior to shutting down, the new Messenger Live was downloaded. I have tried to access the Guest account and 'Manage other accounts' by entering my pa…

Is my computer compromised?
by Guest Kompu Kid- 6 replies

I have built myself a new computer recently. I still have not fully deployed it and keep using the old computer. Today I started the computer and discovered that some internet related software such as Skype, MSN messenger, etc. are not working. Digging deeper I found out that the computer is not seeing the router. I started the repair process, no success. When I tried to find out what IP the computer has with the cmd window, I found out that there was a "regedit" command issued recently--the "run" box keeps the last command issued. I also found out that the computer has an "169.254.187.13" IP address instead of 192.168.2.5 that it usually gets through …

Local Administrator Account or Domain Administrator Account?
by Guest mosquito_hippy- 2 replies

I have this question: Which is a better policy, to have local a administrative account with different credentials in the domain PCs to perform administrative tasks or use Domain Administrative Account to administrate all the domain pc's? I think it's better to use local administrative accounts than compromise the domain administrative account. What do you think? Thanks in advance

Identification to a domain THEN use of credential
by Guest keben- 1 reply

Hi, I would like to know if there is a way to put some kind of timer so that a computer will try to identify first on the domain and only after a certain amount of time use the credential cache. The reason why i would like to do that is that with my password policy user have to change their password every 90 days... but due to dhcp server time to attrib IP, or i dunno what... most of the time when D-day comes my users are not requested to change password at logon but once loggued by the exchange server when they try to access their mail. I assume this happen because they log onto the domain using the credential cach instead of identifying on the domain... i kno…

User Login Names
by Guest David- 0 replies

I hope this is right forum. When I go out to several web sites where I'm registered, when I click their logon (login) textbox and type the first character, a list of user names to select from appears. The list is just my current or former usernames, Not every user name that might exist on the server loging onto that begin with the first character typed. I noticed recently, that my actual name appeared in this list because my logon username happens to start with my first name. I've NEVER used my actual name on any of these sites -- period!! I've searched the registry and I cannot find my user names anywhere on my system. Where does this list resi…

Hi everyone, new to this game, please bear with me? Some messages on screen tell me that I am infected by WORM/Rbot.425984.1 a friend directed me towards 'tucows' (?) but I cannot really make sense of the site (I AM that SLOW!!!). Will the MS Windows own scan system get rid of this worm? and how do I find it again? I came across it once quite awhile ago, but I don't remember what i didi to get there... If you are kind enought o help, please keep the instructions in 'baby-speak'? I am a translator by profession, but jargon (and IT) are way beyond me! Thanks in adavance! -- YF

Question re Hijack this entry - Internet Security, Proxy Override
by Guest ozegirl- 5 replies
Hi, I don't have a problem - just a question. I'm learning to interpret Hijack this entries and would appreciate comment on the following entry: R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = http://localhost; From what I understand, proxy override overrides any proxy server that has been set, so in this case the http:// request is instead redirected to local host - which is the computer sending the request.....? Is this right? Does this mean that the request would just loop back to the originating computer - in which case you would get "page not found" ??? or is the implication that it sets the local compute…

Why are the good old security advices gone
by Guest Jesper Ravn- 5 replies
Hello What happend to basic security advices. You nearly don't hear about them anymore. Im talking about Limited User Account (LUA) and Software Restriction Policy (SRP). Today its all about IE features + big security suites, comodo firewall and fancy removal tools. With LUA and SRP all your family desktop/laptops, will newer get infected. Why has Microsoft and most of the Security MVP's given up on these security principles. They are not even listed here: http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/default.mspx Please also remember that UAC in Vista was not ment to be a security boundary, from what I have read. Any comments?. /Jesper

Hi I have an W2K3( R2 SP2) Active Directory network with ISA Server 2006 at the edge. Most computers use Avast AV. I have monitored attempts to connect from inside server to foreign servers, in this case it is medical network in California. I could not fully analyzed the process,as it takes short time to appear. To give precise data, unwanted process tried by robin like behaviour connect several servers from network 64.54.89.0 Servers are 64bit operating system and I could not use RootkitRevealer. Because of installation time for ProcessExplorer with Symbols take more time that the activity of that "beast", I have no trace... What do you recommend to…
