Windows defender rarely working
by Guest Joe Bloggs- 3 replies

I have a new Dell Studio Desktop 540 using Vista SP1. Very early on I started getting "Windows defender" error on screen "Application failed to initialize: error 0x800106ba. I was getting it on each startup until isolating via MS Config. The "Windows Defender" program does not appear in control panel. I went to "Windows update" page, as I arrived there it said on important update was waiting, by chance it was a windows defender update, I installed it and it worked and I was able to launch windows defender. As I had altered the start-up in MSCONFIG I restored it to normal start-up and machine started fine without any error. However, when I select "Windows d…

I got a time stamp server need need to renew its cert. But after signing the CSR with my Win 2003 CA, I found that some features like Enhanced Key Usage: Time Stamping (1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.8) are missed. I have searched the net and found some tricks to set extension before signing. I did a trial but failed to do so. Please advise. echo 30 0A 06 08 2B 06 01 05 05 07 03 08>timestampoid.txt certutil.exe -setextension 35 2.5.29.37 1 @timestampoid.txt Thanks a lot! +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ |Filename: cert.JPG | |Download: http://forums.techarena.in/attachmen…

Cookie - ATDMT and Mediaplex
by Guest Joe T- 3 replies

I changed a setting on my AVG Free program. I'm now getting a window showing I'm getting these cookies. I've probably always got these cookies but it just logged it automatically. I will change it back so I don't get this window. Is this a microsoft cookie? I get it when I first sign on to my MSN home page. Also I get a Mediaplex cookie. The last time I blocked some cookies(I don't think it was these), I was locked out of my banking site and a few others and I don't want to do that again. Are these benign cookies? Do I want to block these?

Not sure if this is the correct group for this assistance but here's the problem. My computer is a Dell XPS 420, Vista Home Premium, my account has administrator privileges. My wife's computer is a Dell Dimension E520, Vista Ultimate, her account has admin privileges. We run OneCare Live for all security and backup needs. I installed a network backup using a Linksys NLSU2 and, up till yesterday had a 320 GB TrekStor HD as the backup device. I disconnected the TrekStor and now have a LaCie 1TB HD. Prior to connecting it to the NLSU2 I connected the new HD to my computer and ran the setup. Formatted the drive to NTFS. I connected it to the network a…

enterprise vs stand-alone CA
by Guest B L Muzzy- 1 reply

I want to create a Certificate Authority on each of 2 DCs in a win2003 Active Directory domain. I'm not sure if it makes better sense to set up Enterprise Root CAs or Stand-alone root CAs. The clients will be coldfusion web apps that know nothing of windows domains. So they won't be able to participate 'automatically' in the certificate enrollment available with Enterprise CAs. I want to have 2 CAs for failover. Each client specifies the DC that it will use for user creation & password changes explicitedly. That is, i can't tell them to authenticate with the domain, they have to authenticate with and communicate over SSL with a specific DC. So…

Problem: Can not share CDROM drive on Server OS: Server 2003 for small business Server Servicepack 2 (german) logged on as: Domain Administrator Hello, I try to share the CD ROM Drive on a Server. I can share all Harddrives and folders, but not the CD Rom drive. Wehn I rightclick the cd drive, "Shares and Security" is missing. If i click on the properties for the drive, I see General, Autoplay, and Hardware, but no Security or shares. but they are available if i try to share a Harddrive or folder instead. How to access a registry entry wo no access rights
by Guest David Thielen- 3 replies

Hi; We have a problem where one of our customers has installed our software which is an AddIn to Microsoft Office. The registry entries that tell Word where to find this AddIn cannot be accessed by any user, even when the user logs in as administrator and and does a RunAs as the administrator. He is not on a domain and got his computer from BestBuy where they "optimized" Vista for him. One interesting thing - his account has no password and it will not let him set a password (an interesting approach to security). Any ideas? thanks - dave david@at-at-at@windward.dot.dot.net Windward Reports -- http://www.WindwardReports.com me -- http://dave.thielen…

What permissions should we set
by Guest David Thielen- 1 reply

Hi; In our installer we want to make sure all users can read the registry entries we set in HKCR & HKLM. Our app is an Office AddIn and these are the settings needed for Office to load the AddIn. It's not sufficient to use the currently running user because in many cases it's an admin installing the program and a different user running it. We also cannot use domain groups because the user may not be on a domain. Should we just give "Everyone" read permission? thanks - dave david@at-at-at@windward.dot.dot.net Windward Reports -- http://www.WindwardReports.com me -- http://dave.thielen.com Cubicle Wars - http://www.windwardreports.com/film.htm

I keep getting this pop-up on my new HP laptop. My on-board security tells me it's from an unknown source. What the heck is it? Google search is not turning up many inquiries about this, and no answers; only place to download the thing. My own theory is that Norton, etc put this stuff out to keep you paronoid! Is anyone else getting this?

infocard.exe
by Guest AliceZ- 14 replies

I had a pop-up today from NIS firewall asking if I would allow a program "infocard.exe" to allow a program to connect to a DNS server. Not knowing what it was, I clicked Block. You can only choose Block or Allow. There is no Allow This Time or Block This Time. Nor could I close the box. I have done some checked and found that the following is in the NIS Firewall section: "windows cardspace." And when I put the cursor over it, I see the following information, which I believe to that program that was trying to access the DNS. "c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v3.0\windows.communication foundation\infocard.exe" and it has "Block All" next to it. …

Hi, I run Vista Premium using Word 2003 and Norton Internet security: Since updating Last months updates and the various ones since, every time I start up my computer it tells me that Windows Defender is not turned on; this is getting a bit much having to turn it on every time I start up my computer.
