Office 2007 personal settings lost on Windows Vista
by Guest Mostafa- 1 reply

Hello, I am using Office 2007 on Windows Vista Home Premium. Every time I start Word or PowerPoint, I find that all the personalized settings are lost and reverted back to defaults. For example: auto capitalization settings and recently used fonts. I was going to post this message to Office 2007 newsgroup but I realized that this problem didn't happen in Windows XP, so I assume it is something related to Windows Vista security/access control. Thank you,

malware affecting IE7 on XP 1 2
by Guest John- 39 replies

I seem to have some kind of malware affecting IE7 & Firefox on my PC w/ XP. Does anyone recopgnize this? I have Avira AntiVir, been updating it every day and scans don't detect anything. I am not able to browse to certain sites like avira.com, avg.com, and other anti-virus sites. With IE7 I get redirected to a Google page and w/ Firefox a "page load error" screen saying that the browser "failed to connect". If I type www.avira.com into IE7 I am redirected to a Google search page at this URL (I don't advise clicking it): http://www.google.com/search?q=www.avira.c...ex=&startPage=1 If I click the link to avira.com from that page, it takes me to…

Re: Keyboard and Touchpad Crashes When Installing Update KB890830

[Let me note that your problem really has nothing to do with Windows Update other than the fact that AU gave you this month's version of the MSRT once. As the thread's really OT for Windows Update newsgroup, I'm going to crosspost to Vista Security newsgroup, too.] You paid for BitDefender support with your subscription: What have they had to say about all this? <span style="color:blue"> > Both Bit Defender and MSRT KB890830 are recognising and deleting the > file US30Kbd2K.sys as a trojan - but they are not deleting/modifying the > associated registry entries.</span> Have you tried to delete them manually? <span style="color:blu…

Vista secure email problem: Cannot connect to email server when specific digital id is installed
by Guest rejohnson- 3 replies
I imported a personal digital certificate from an XP machine running Outlook Express onto my Vista Home Premium (32 bit) laptop. With the certificate installed, Windows Mail instantly (either when mail is started, or when send/receive is clicked) gives the error message below: "Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'attmail', Server: 'pop.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure email: Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F" I have checked all settings and they all appear to be the same between both machines. Both are running IE 7 as …

Freedom.exe and disabled Internet Explorer and Desktop
by Guest shuvlboy- 9 replies

I ran a free-trial version of Verizon PC Security Checkup. It id'd 30 instances of spyware. After removing them, I rebooted. I can no longer bring up the Control Panel, My Computer, Explorer, or any folders on the desktop. I get a "Fatal Error - Cannot start Freedom, because the "Resource" directory or one of its sub-directories is missing. Please try re-installing Freedom." Internet Explorer 7 also hangs, but doesn't generate the error. (Firefox doesn't appear to be affected.) Verizon tech support has been polite, but not very helpful. Any suggestions? I run XP on a desktop HP.

by Guest thisismyname- 1 reply

Somehow one of the standard accounts on my computer was changed to an administrator. Now I can't change it back. I have tried changing it from the account and from another administrator account, and when I click "Change Account Type", nothing happens. Does anyone know why the account type would have changed in the first place, or how to get it to change back? Thanks -- thisismyname

Adware Tracking Cookies problem......please HELP
by Guest Arkad II- 4 replies

Hi there Could someone please help me out here? Problem is “Adware Tracking Cookiesâ€Â. I see this advertisement when I surf the internet. Ad is from “Creative Zen MP4 player†of about ½ inch thick and the width of a webpage. It usually pops up at the bottom of a webpage but sometimes it appears at the top of page. The ad comes on only when I surf the internet at free wireless hotspots eg. Macdonald’s, library, etc. Weird thing is that none of those guys that surf at the same hotspot get it. Scenario: Go to a hotspot. Logon to the web. Start surfing. After a while, suddenly I see this footer ad on a piece of local news …

Virus Alert for Safe Websites
by Guest Scott- 5 replies

Twice in the last ten days I have been the subject of a virus attack from perceived safe websites. I invite comments on if this is a correct assessment. Details. Attack 1. (March 12) On the website http://netscape.aol.com at the top of the page, I clicked on the link "Get Winamp toolbar". The browser indicated that I saved to disk one file called "toolbar.exe". I ran this file and got this unexpected warning: Ad Watch Live Alerts (I have this Ad Aware program) stopped process ns70.tmp (3932) because it identified it as Win32.Trojan.Agent. The Winamp toolbar did install. Scans by Spybot and AVG Free did not detect any infection. If Win XP suppose…

Vista explorer can write to network folder but app can't?
by Guest Mark B- 1 reply

I have a Microsoft Access database runtime application (split front end/back end) that normally runs fine with the backend data file (BackendData.mdb) sitting on a shared network folder. I have been contacted by a user who says he's getting a 'No permission' error when the front-end app tries to write to the BackendData.mdb file in the network folder. He says however that through the particular machine's Vista Windows Explorer, he can write (e.g. copy BackendData.mdb, create new documents) to that network folder OK. The server is Windows 2003. How can I give 'my app' permission to write to the network folder?

I attended today's mo. security briefing and could not get an answer to this: are any or all of the malicious software scanned for in the newest version of MSRT (2.8) ALSO covered if one is running Live One Care? What about Windows Defender; are we to assume that Win Def. is supplanted by the functions of Live One Care? -- Thomas Peter v B

Cannot run executable from W2003 Server after joining domain
by Guest EHuggz- 2 replies
I am setting up a W2003 Server as a Terminal Server that accesses a financial system on another file server. Everything works fine as long as the W2003/TS is not a member of the domain, but after joining the domain I can no longer run the executable on the file server required to setup users on TS - receiving a "do not have required permissions" error. Removing the server from the domain restores the ability to run the .EXE setup file. This is a very small network with just two servers. Server 1: 2003 File Server, SQL Server, and domain controller (primary). Server 2: 2003 Server and Terminal Server. The TS is used by users in a remote building who nee…

Identify servers as Local Zone
by Guest EHuggz- 1 reply
I am setting up a Win2003 server for Terminal Services. The default IE restriction prevents executables from running even when not using IE to access the files. Questions: 1. Why aren't the servers recognized as local servers (all are AD members)? 2. Can I disable executable restrictions across the board on the TS? 3. How can I default IE to recognize the file servers as part of Local Zone? 4. If all else fails, how can I automatically add servers to Local Zone as new members logon to TS? Thank you.

2003 Auto Enrollment
by Guest Orbital- 5 replies

Hi All, 2008 PKI, with a 2003 level domain. 2003 and 2008 DC's in a root and child domain structure. Can anyone suggest some things to look at as to why my 2003 and XP clients are not autoenrolling? I know it's a very generic question, but I'm happy with a generic look at X Y and Z answer! 2008 are working beautifully. I've enabled the GPO in root and child domains for autoenrollment. Is the 'CERTSVC_DCOM_ACCESS' group membership relevant here? Many thanks in advance, Orb.

Security Log getting spammed with Event 675
by Guest Jim A.- 4 replies

The security log is filling up on my DC with 675 events (pre-authentication failed). These events are happening over a hundred times a day and I cant figure out what is causing them. What is interesting is that the service name on these events is not the same service name that shows up when I try to log on to my workstation and intentionally put in a bad password. First, here are the events that are getting spammed: Pre-authentication failed: Username: Administrator User ID: API\Administrator Service Name: krbtgt/ADVANCEDPRODUCTSINTL.LOCAL Pre-authenticaion Type: 0x2 Failure Code: 0x18 Client Address: 192.168.1.240 Now when I try to logon to my…
