DEP Compliance
by Guest pkelley- 1 reply

I have a C# .Net application (EXE and DLL) that I want to make Data Execution Prevention (DEP) compliant. What do I need to add to my code to do this? What the application does: The EXE loops around with a list of e-mail user ID's (uids), passing each uid down into the DLL where the DLL makes a SOAP connection to Exchange Web Services (EWS) to retrieve calendar information. In my unit test, I purposely pass down an invalid uid and wait for, and catch, the SOAP/Web Exception. At that point, I get the dreaded, "...Windows has closed this program..." message box, and my EXE is no longer permitted to execute. The uid's that follow, are valid uid's and wh…

Windows defender error message during scan
by Guest PClinks- 1 reply

During a Windows defender scan i get the error message "0x8050800c" The last successful scan was on 04/02/2009, prior to an new update for Windows defender definitions. This message was displayed every time the scan hit a registry entry for VNC. As I no longer had VNC installed i removed the entry and scan was able to continue past that point. However it now fails at the following reg entry; HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Internet Settings\Zonemap\Ranges\Range1\\:range I am thinking there is some sort of malware that is causing the error. I have installed Spy bot, Ad-aware, CCleaner run scans with all. And have been running TrendMi…

Export Certificates in PKCS #12 format
by Guest BillL- 4 replies

Hi, I'm trying to export certificates in Personal Information Exchange format. When I try to use the Certificate Export WIzard from the CA or from the Certifcates mmc snapin on my desktop the option to export to a PKCS #12 format is always greyed out. I've also tried to do a certutil -getkey using the certificate's serial number but it comes back with "cannot find object or property" . The certificate template does have the box "Allow private key to be exported" checked. Is there a setting in the Certifcate template that must be set to allow it to be exported in this format? Or am I missing something else? Thanks.

VLAN Security
by Guest Mark Sassman- 0 replies

I have a network with servers and desktops that I want to put on one vlan segment, and laptops on a seperate vlan. I have seperate security zones on the router for laptops and desktops. Laptops are used with full admin rights, so my concern is a laptop infecting the rest of the network. I would like to open ports between the 2 security zones for file sharing, exchange email, antivirus updates, etc. My question is, if I open ports for these functions, am I defeating the purpose of segregating my networks.

XP sys restore to infected point and M$Defender problem?
by Guest poster- 0 replies

After MS Defender update, it cleared spyware(that Nod 32 left unnoticed) ,but then dsl modem stopped working and cannot be uninstalled(reinstalled again, because uninstall utility says it is already uninstalled although it is there). Restoring to some point before Defender update when modem was ok and comparing with the registry copy after the Defender intervention(with which tool?) would allow to remove manually the spyware key from reg and keep the modem, provided the sys restore also restored some system files that Defender possibly (accidentally) deleted. What chance is the spyware will not be working without its key and how about some other suggestions ho…

Outlook 2007 Read Receipt Security Hole?!
by Guest Tyurin, Andrey- 10 replies

I have discovered that Read Receipt feature in Outlook 2007 contain security hole that doesn't appear to be fixed or even described. In "Options\E-mail Options\Tracking Options" I've feature named Read Receipt set to "Never send a response". Recently I received a few messages with titles "Undeliverable mail: Read: ....". After inspecting this mail messages I've found that their mime-headers is OK and it looks like Outlook sent mail messages (without any notifications) titled "Read: ..." to a few SPAM messages in my inbox (IMAP4 account). Of course these spam-messages have Read Receipt option set. I've made simple test to determine is that really bug b…

Wifi Security

Good Morning All. Over the weekend, I have been helping my neighbour with her wireless internet. It has been set up OK, and has WEP protection, but I want to be sure that it is totally secure. To make sure, I took it upon myself to collect a few tools and attempt to break into her wireless internet connection. The tools in question were popular ones such as AirCrack, AirSnort, Easy Wifi Radar, etc. I want to use them on my laptop, which is an Acer Extensa 5220 with an Broadcom 802.11g Wireless Adaptor and using Windows Vista Home Basic SP1. I cannot configure the wireless adaptor to work with the above programs! I attempted to start AeroDump (to collect …

I noticed that SBS 2003 doesn't accept sha256RSA signatures on security certificates. On the other hand: XP SP3 and Vista does accept. Is there a reason why the SBS 2003 hasn't been patched yet?

Hi, I have an external hard disk where I backup my files and system backups. Yesterday, I purchased a larger external hard disk and want to transfer everything to the new disk. The only command I have noticed is DISKCOPY which might do this. Will this copy everything from the source disk to destination disk? Will the Vista backup directories and shadow (backup) files be copied too? Is there any other tool (preferably freeware) that will do this for me? Thank you in advance. NJ

hello, I donn't know how to get OS security update list in Vista. I want to write a c++ program which can get security update display names list in vista and I can't use WUA lib. Who knows other methods except using WUA. I have tried to do something, for example: Firstly, in windows XP, I have get the list of security updates through enumerating registry "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall", but in vista, I can't, there is no information of security update in the registry. Secondly, I have used MsiEnumProducts and MsiEnumPatches (api of Msi.lib), but I only got the patchs of products, not OS security update. …
