Upon accessing Windows Security Center, I see both Virus Protection and Spyware are both turned Off. Upon accessing Security Provider - Symantec, I see only Norton Internet Security listed. What do we need to do for the Windows Security Center to acknowledge Norton 360 installed and working well? Appreciate! Sadie

When Windows Firewall altered me that it blocked a program and I chose to to block it, the program was still allowed to send traffic. I tried manually blocking the program by making an Inbound and Outbound rule in the Advanced Security console, but this isn't working either. Screen of Windows alerting me: http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/908/70924482tj1.png Screen of the traffic passing by anyway: http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/7333/66837047si4.png Does anyone know why the Firewall seems to be failing? Thank you~

Smart Card use for remote desktop
by Guest Mikey43- 1 reply

Here at our place of employment, we have one smart card for general network logon and a second smart card for administrative tasks. Do manage this, we have two card readers at our desktops. Our issue is when trying to remote to another users PC to perform troubleshooting and/or maintenance, Windows Vista only sees one card reader with remote desktop connections. Is there a method of allowing Vista to give us the choice of which smart card to use with RDC?

Require Anti Virus Software for Windows Server 2008?
by Guest Gum- 2 replies

Is it possible to use Windows Server 2008 within a domain in which all clients (each with antivirus software) are connected to the internet without the use of an antivirus software? Are there installation types that easily restrict the surface area exposed to a minimum, but can be as readily adjusted to enable selected processes to run?

How to add to Internet Favorites with UAC on?
by Guest Tom- 16 replies

Hope this is the right place for a UAC question I have a Vista64 Ultimate system. A few weeks after the initial build, I determined that the hard disk was bad as it would hang until it had run and warmed up for quite a while. Purchased a new hard disk and reinstalled windows. As part of the "new" install, I used an 8Gig USB drive to transfer personal files (including Favorites) from the old system/hard disk to the new one. Process was to boot up windows on the old hard disk, transfer files to the USB drive, boot up windows on the new hard disk and transfer the files from the USB drive to the new C: drive. The new hard disk/system is working fine e…

Security Issue? with Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

Security Issue? with Windows Audio Endpoint Builder Hello. I was tracking down why my svhost.exe (used for internet & network Connections) was being used to access a whole bunch of Picture files in one of my folders. Files that were not being used by any other program or service at the time (not even the File Manager). It was running _under_LocalSystemNetworkRestricted_mode_ and i tracked the PID to the "'-Windows Audio Endpoint builder-' (http://tinyurl.com/6nbez6)" Service. I used the resource monitor to see that the WAEB was accessing numerous files in various folders. _What_stood_out_was_my_personal_pictures_it_was_accessing_. I l…

Importing Certificates to Windows Mobile 6 devices
by Guest BillL- 0 replies

Hi, We are trying to generate certificates for Windows Mobile 6 devices. They tell me that the Certificate Manager application on these devices will not import .cer and .pvk file. It is looking for a .pfx file. I have been unable to export the certificates in this format. When I try to use the Certificate Export WIzard from the CA the option to export to a PKCS #12 format is greyed out. I've also tried to do a certutil -getkey using the certificate's serial number but it comes back with "cannot find object or property" . The certificate template does have the box "Allow private key to be exported" checked. Thanks.

VLC Media Player Security Vulnerability
by Guest Cal Bear '66- 3 replies
Bonn, Germany - A security hole has been discovered in the VLC Media Player, the German Federal Agency for Security in Information Technology (BSI) in Bonn reported. Attackers can exploit this vulnerability using rigged Real Media files (file ending with "rm") to install malicious software onto the user's computer. The victim has just to open the manipulated multimedia file. VLC Media Player versions prior to release 0.9.8 are affected, the BSI reports. The software maker has fixed the problem for Version 0.9.8, but to date has only made the source code available. All VLC Media Player users are advised to remove the file libreal_plugin manually from the V…

by Guest bestbapu- 1 reply

Some background on the Windows 2000 server in question: I have a DNS server behind a firewall. Ports access thru the firewall are 80, 53 & 21. On this DNS server I am running MySQL 5.x Apache 2.x and PHP 5.0.x. I have 6 virtual web servers setup in Apache all on port 80. The problem with the server is that the network icon in the systray is almost constantly on (both in and out). And if I try and access any of the 6 websites on this system, most of the they timeout. This problem is only just now occuring (well, in the last month or so) even though the sever has been up and running for well over three years without a problem. Event viewer ha…

SpywareGaurd & SG9 1 2

problem: while casually browsing the net and clicked on a search link to a site that contained a description pertaining to my question, my browser was taken to the new spyware guard site now called sg9, where the site appears to be your own computer explorer. then there is a fake scan performed, producing a fake alert citing dozens of infections found, then the site induces people to download their program. its also a contemptuous because people are led to believe that they cannot close the alert window and must install their program onto the disk. solution: people should avoid such sites or understand a couple of ways to protect thems…

Vista password doesn't match AD password
by Guest Richard Carr- 1 reply

Hi, I changed my AD password using a different PC than I normally use. When returning to my normal machine (Vista) and logging in over a VPN, the Vista box will only allow me to log on using my AD account and my old password. I then have to provide the new password every time I access a networked resource. If I hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and try to change my password, Vista complains my credentials are incorrect no matter which password I enter. Can anyone help please? Thanks R

I am using the techinque to get the TokenElevationType using the API GetTokenInformation on Vista to determine if a user is an admin. It seems to work fine on Vista Business/Ultimate etc. However, it fails on Vista Home. Does anyone have any clues? The code is along the following lines: TOKEN_ELEVATION_TYPE elevationType; DWORD dwSize; GetTokenInformation(hUserToken, TokenElevationType, &elevationType, sizeof(elevationType), &dwSize); switch (elevationType) { case TokenElevationTypeDefault: TRACE(_T("TokenElevationTypeDefault - User is not using a split token\n")); m_bAdmin = FALSE; break; case TokenElevationTypeFull: TRACE(_T("Toke…
