LogonUI / LSA when submiting credentials?
by Guest igor.jovanovski@gmail.com- 2 replies

This might seem not very reliable case, but stay with me on this explanation, it seems that windows has a bug here: We have a Credential Provider for proprietery logon with Smart Cards. In the Crededntial Provider I read the accounts from the Smart Card and submit them in the GetSerialization method packed in KERB_INTERACTIVE_LOGON. The login works fine. When I write the domain/ computer name of anoter OS installation from the same machine, the logon still works! I checked the trace up to the moment where the data are returned back via GetSerializaion method. If I enter I dumy computer name and try the same again, it will report the error "unknown user name or…

I'm running Vista Home premium on a HP dv9743cl laptop. If I let the computer stand idle for 3-5 minutes the computer freezes up and I get the error message, "Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog." At that point I have to use the power button to turn the computer off. I've run a virus check (Norton 2009) and chkdsk/f and no errors are listed. Does anyone know what the error message means and how to fix it? Ken Dunn Cleveland, OH

Hello everyone, I am new here & also to Vista & I need a bit of help please!! I have bought 2 new PCs & an NAS unit to run my businesses Sage accounts program on one computer Windows (Vista Business) has appended a Windows "Security Shield" to the Sage desktop icon. This means that needs Sage needs UAC approval to run, despite the "Run as Administrator" in the Sage Icon's Properties/Shortcut/Advanced menu box being un-checked. It is also giving Sage problems accessing it’s data which is stored remotely. It would appear that Vista classifies programs and gives some of them a shield & not others, but why has it given Sage a shield…

Windows Defender Alway Allow/Permit Option
by Guest Mark R. Cusumano- 2 replies

There is monitoring software on my computer that from time to time changes information which Windows Defender flags and asks me what to do about the changes. I'm only ever given 2 options, Permit or Deny. It never gives me the option to Always Allow and I can't manually add the program to the list of Allowed programs (which I think is a real flaw in the program). The documentation says that the only way to add something to that list is to select Always Allow then it comes up but I'm never given that option. Am I doing something wrong? -- Mark R. Is anyone familiar with this issue...I am trying to configure the power option settings in Windows XP Pro via a group policy (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915160/en-us) and I'm unable to add a group and/or a user to the documented registry subkey. How do I set this permission using a GPO or script during the login process? Using a Group Policy (Computer Configuration --> Windows Settings --> Security Settings --> Registry) doesn't seem to work. FYI...If I manually add the group and/or user prior to logon it works perfectly. What am I missing? -- Will Wesley Network Systems Engineer - MCP+I, MCSA, MCSE

My granddaughter wrote a book report on MS Word and saved it to a USB "thumbdrive". The book report "Movie Review.doc" (23k) was saved but another file called Scrap (39k) was saved at the same time. There was no file extention for the Scrap file. Does anyone know what caused this additional file to be saved, what this file is and is it harmful. Thank you for your help. Vista 64 IE 7 I just ran ad-aware, and Win32.TrojanPWS.Mapper has showed up AGAIN. The TAI rating for this is 10. It is located in C:\BigFishGamesCache\Hidden Expedition - Titanic\kbqqcs.exe Before I remove it, I would like to know if I should remove/uninstall the Big Fish Game, Hidden Expedition - Titanic. Also, are there any other files associated with it that I should remove. I removed this once before, on Jan. 2nd, using ad-aware and this is the first time it has showed up again. I have not played the game since then, but have played and installed other big fish games. Also, I did not originally download Hidden Expedition Titanic from the …

My daughter has a 1 yr old Sony laptop with Vista Home Basic and it's on a wireless secured network. She downloads pics from her camera and places them in the My Pictures folder. Last week she noticed that her pictures and pic folders were missing and in their place pictures she has no idea where they came from or who the pics are of. Other folders and files appear intact. After a complete search, including recycle bin, her pic files and folders were nowhere to be found. The firewall is always on, updates are automatic and programs AWG, Adaware and Spybot are updated regularly, run and no signs of problems. The only thing that may have been unusual was she temp…

Hello, We have a number of BizTalk & SQL servers. Both have certificates for encryption/signing within the BizTalk enviroment. I'm developing an Access database to track the certificates. Is there a way to use VBScript to pull all the information (displayed on the details tab of a certificate) shown in the Certificate Manager MMC? I can either respond to a prompt for a specific remote server, or simply supply all the server names in a file. I have an Access table with a column for each of the fields in the certificate details. It would be too time-consuming to do this manually. Any help or references to other sources of info is greatly apprec…

British military hit with cyberattacks
by Guest ~BD~- 4 replies

The British Ministry of Defence is currently coping with a cyberattack that has managed to redirect e-mails from multiple Royal Air Force facilities to computers inside Russia, according to a report from Military.com's DefenseTech blog. The attack, which took the form of an e-mail worm, is reported to have driven MOD officials to shut down all e-mail for a period earlier this week. The attack comes on the heels of a malware attack on the U.S. Department of Defense's networks late last year, as reported here. That attack led to the temporary ban on removable media such as USB "thumb drives," which were an alleged culprit in the attacks. A spokesman fo…
