Defender Keeps being Turned Off
by Guest Endulini- 4 replies
Hi All, Every time I boot up I get an alert telling me that Defender has is not turned on. I turn it on an everything is hunky dory until the next time I boot up and we have to go through the same process again. This is only a recent thing and as far as I can tell the system is clear of viruses and spyware. Can anyone offer me any insight? (It may or may not be relevant but anti-virus software (Kaspersky 7.0) is suddenly not visible to the Security Centre either. It runs ok but is Vista thinks I'm running without anti-virus software..... ) Thanks for any help.

Re: New Vista System Backup - No Boot Disk?
by Guest bbabbitt2003- 1 reply

Greetings... I purchased a Vista Ultimate upgrade download directly from Microsoft. It installed over Windows XP on my dual boot mac. Incidentally - I really like Vista, it's too bad that it seems like many people have inconsistant experiences with it, so far I have had no problems. My question is... is there a way to make a boot disk so that I will be able to access my full pc backup should I need to. Acronis provides a boot utility to restore, it seems like Windows would do the same but I can't find any mention of it. Thanks! -- bbabbitt2003 Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com

Web server compromised?
by Guest bestbapu- 9 replies

I have a web server behind a firewall (port 80 is mapped in my router from public IP to private IP). The network status icon is solid blue. After 4 hours of being online the computer reports 128,786,731 bytes received. That seems excessive. How I discovered this is that web sites on that server are "timing out" when being accessed. IOW, they do not display. I can ping the website names. The websites all run under Apache. No IIS on this server. The server is W2K server with all updates being current. No active directory. I've run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and it reports no problems. What might the problem be?

KB960714 tries to repeatedly install
by Guest Endulini- 1 reply

I can see that I'm not the only one with update problems. I have similar issues with the above update although the update history does show that it installed ok the first time it was downloaded. However it doesn't appear on the list of installed updates and Vista attempt to download and install it every time I boot up although it fails with a Code 800736b2 error. I've tried restoring to a point before the first 'successful' download and install with no success, does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks

Help with possible virus/malware/spyware infection
by Guest paintlover70- 10 replies

Operating system is Windows XP. Antivirus program is AVG Free. Recently my AVG program would not update. I keep receiving a message that states it cannot connect with the server. I went to the website for AVG free and found out that my computer is most likely infected with a Malware. There was a discussion on this site about how to get help with the problem. Suggestions were to a couple of different virus/malware programs, re-install AVG free, check the TCP-IP settings as well as HOSTS. Unfortunately just about any virus, malware, spyware site I go to the Internet page will not open, yet I know they work because I am able to open them on my laptop com…

kerberos logon to IP address
by Guest Ondrej Sevecek- 4 replies
hello, as I investigated the Kerberos implementation in Vista, Vista is NOT willing to use Kerberos against an IP address. I was not able to make Vista uses Kerberos against IP address not even by creating SPN for the IP address. Although windows XP actually try to generate a ticket even for IP addresses, and if an appropriate SPN is available, they receive the ticket, Vista doesn't seam to do it under any circumstances, right ? Vista just doesn't ask for a ticket for an IP address at all. Can this be changed somehow? many thanks. ondra.

Cannot read registry keys under HKLM with UAC enabled on Vista?
by Guest Emmanuel Stapf [ES]- 6 replies
Hi, I have a program that worked successfully for quite some time and just recently it stopped working. I tracked it down to a reading of a registry key located in HKLM\Software where I get an error from the Win32 API `RegOpenKeyEx' which returns with a value of 2 (that is to say there is no such entries). But there is such an entry so this is very puzzling. What is happening? Why was it working before and not now? The same program works fine under another vista machine which is more or less configured the same way. Of course disabling UAC works but that's out of the question. Thanks, Manu

Hello, I have a Windows Server 2008 on a Windows Server 2003 AD Domain. By default, "Domain Admins" is in the Local Administrators group, after I joined the Windows 2008 server to the domain. Even though the Administrators group has Full Control, when I log in as a Domain Admin, I can not install any software unless I log in as the Local Administrator. I also can not write to the C drive while logged in as a Domain Admin. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
