SQL Server not running
by Guest berger- 1 reply
I use my Windows XP system for a limited number of applications. A couple of weeks ago, it started bogging down.. a lot. Now when I try to start up my UPS Worldship, it says that the SQL Server is not running. I tried to restore to an earlier date, but that didn't fix it. Someone passing by said to reset the computer to the original condition the day I received it, but I don't know how to do that either. Any data and software I need is backed up separately, so resetting the computer would be fine. Any suggestions on either resetting the computer or starting the SQL Server, or...? -- berger

UDP Packet Filtering Help
by Guest 1nsane- 1 reply

I need to drop certain UDP packets if the rules are matched. On Linux I would do it with iptables and the following: -A INPUT -p udp --dport PORT_HERE -m length --length 28 -j DROP However most of my servers run Windows Server 2003/2008 and I am not at all certain as to how I could achieve the same the effect here on Windows Server. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

by Guest xistens_pet- 1 reply

My Vista Home Basic has stopped uploading Important Updates (they always Fail) but still downloads Office Updates automatically, I am now unable to download from the Internet (the file downloads but isn't stored anywhere), and my security centre won't allow me to turn my Firewall on. I've tried chkdsk but it comes up with nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions for any of these problems?

Hi, I'm wrapping existing password credential provider and need to know the username, password and domain. Username and password fields are easy to find among other fields in the wrapped credential by their GUIDs - CPFG_LOGON_USERNAME, CPFG_LOGON_PASSWORD. Is there a publicky defined GUID for Domain too? Or how can I correctly find the field in credential for Domain? Thanks, Tomas

by Guest Pelle Plutt- 1 reply

I have been trying to use icacls to automate setting an deny write+delete for Everyone to avoid modifying a "gold master" folder. Unfortunately I have been unable to get it to work. Here's what I did: I created one folder xxx and another yyy. Using the Security tab of the Properties dialog for xxx, I added an entry for everyone and checked deny for Create files / write data Create folders / append data Write attributes Write extented attributes Delete subfolders and files Delete This now works fine - I can browse into the xxx folder, list files but not change or delete stuff. Using icacls to list the ACL this comes out as: Everyone:(OI…

I am running Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP1 and have installed all features of IIS 7.0. I am now trying to install Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 downloaded yesterday from Microsoft (latest version 64-bit version). When I attempt the install, the application only shows port 80 (uneditable) available and I wish to install it to use 1025 as the instructions in Virtual Server 2005 recommend. I am trying to set up a lab to test some deployment solutions and Group Policy settings using Virutal Server 2005 and Virtual PC as described in Jeremy Moskowitz' books Creating the Secure Managed Desktop and Group Policy: Fundamentals, Security, etc. The authentications are n…

First experience with Windows seven

I recently installed a beta version (build 7000) of this O.S. The installation went very well and on a previously formatted disc, completed in 20 minutes. All of my Vista software was installed without problems. I realise that this a beta version, and as such may be subject to quite a number of improvements and bug fixes during the next few months. My initial impression though is that this a good system, but not very much better than Vista. There is an on board defragmentation tool, which operates automatically, in addition to spectacular new desktops, but overall it looks more like the result of a Vista service pack. Being quite satisfied with my current…

I see my adversary has changed his email address now (same IP address though - I did check!) If anyone here has sufficient protection (or think they do!) to click on these links I'd be interested to learn if they really are 'safe'. I'm fairly sure they must be safe or someone of the standing of Mr Foldes wouldn't have posted them ........... would he? (evil grin!) Can anyone help? For the last two days I find that on my PC (using XP), whenever I use Yahoo or Google search, and using either MSIE or Firefox, I am redirected to pages that do not seem to be the one listed on the search engines and tend to be commercially-based. The uurls of gallane.com, bediidle.com, and xalab.com seem to appear a lot in the bottom line of the browser while the search engines works. For example, on typing Buddhism in Yahoo, one of the early options listed by Yahoo is: BBC - Religion & Ethics - Buddhism Guide to Buddhism, a tradition of personal spiritual development, including ... The history of Buddhism is the story of one man'…
