mrtstub.exe
by Guest ellisdesign@talktalk.net- 2 replies

I have noticed that several of my drives have multiple folders with randomly generated names like < c1d507a65a5b840fd01d > Each of these folders contains three files - $shtdwn$.req : mrt.exe._p : mrtstub.exe. These look like something that has been generated by an abnormal shutdown ($shtdwn$ is a bit of a clue), and I wonder if I can safely delete them? Looking for mrtstub.exe in Google brings up a load of alarming messages indicating that it might be malware, that running it might delete all my data ..... etc. I would like to get rid of it - can I safely do so? Anyone interested in IT 'security' should enjoy this video presentation. Three excellent speakers! http://www.itbriefingcenter.com/programs/g...rosoft_358.html If there is one constant in IT security, it's that there will always be a new threat. Just when you think you've secured your organization, a new danger comes along. That's why organizations need to know that their software vendors are fully committed to security and vested in driving innovations that will counter emerging threats. Software vendors can no longer rely on ad hoc and unstructured security development approaches. Security must be engineered into every stage of software development. In…

by Guest Berj- 2 replies

Hi everyone When I go to TOOLS-FOLDER OPTIONS-VIEWS tab and I check SHOW HIDDEN FILES then ok, it doesn't show my hidden files. I return back the same place to check the option and I see that it is automatically back to DO NOT SHOW HIDDEN FILES. What is wrong? can anybody advise. I tried contacting the ESET guys (I have NOD32 AV), they asked me to send them a few log files but said nothing was wrong and I had to ask Microsoft about it. Thanks in advance.

Access Denied...how to get control of MY vista/win7 computer?
by Guest spamme0- 9 replies
I need a pointer to a tutorial on how to get back control of my computer. Have same problems in both vista and windows-7 beta. Access denied for most of what I want to do. I'm trying to make hardware and software work in windows-7. Permission problems, failure of older install programs to execute, unable to register dlls, it's a nightmare. Compatibility mode helps when you have access to the executable file. When it's buried inside an installer..not so much. Problem is same in Vista. Here's a current situation. wmplayer.exe is getting started by whoknowswhat and interferes with other programs that need access to the cdrom. I NEVER want to use wmplay…

Hi all! I am now setting up standalone Certificate Authority (Root & Subordinate CA) using Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition. Under the default setting, I got "Key Usage" for both CA as "Digital Signature, Certificate Signing, Off-line CRL Signing, CRL Signing (86)". For some reasons, I want to change the key usage to "Digital Signature, Non-Repudiation, Certificate Signing, Off-line CRL Signing, CRL Signing (c6)". How can I do it? Also, in the "Authority Key Identifier" field, I would like to include both "Certificate Issuer" & "Certificate Serialnumber" into this field. I tried the following commands already but it didn't work. certut…

Encrypting Administrator's profile
by Guest Kirsten- 5 replies

Is there any way to encrypt (EFS or similar) the entire administrator's profile folder (C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator) so as to prevent a user from login in to the computer if he changes the password with a dos utility? (CIA Commander for example). There's no point in having domain policies if the user can login as the administrator and do whetever he wants with the computer! What else do you suggest? (please don't say "put a bios password" or "forbid physical access to the computer") Thanks a lot!

I've been able to find countless references to the above message but the situations do not seem to be exactly like mine, or the solutions presented did not work for the original poster. Here's my saga: I had an XP machine die on me. There were 3 physical hard drives in there, and there are things I want to keep from all 3. All 3 were formatted and populated by the XP machine. I got one of those USB enclosures. I also got a brand new computer a couple of days ago which is running, of course, Vista. My first thought was to blow away the O/S and install XP, but was convinced to give Vista a shot. I put the old XP boot disk into the enclosure and plug…
