Backing up Bitlocker encrypted data
by Guest glr- 1 reply
My laptop data is encrypted by Bitlocker. As an FYI, the laptop does not have a TPM chip so I store the key on a flash drive. I wish to backup the data on a WD My Book. I understand that a standard back up will not be encrypted. So at the moment, the backup drives are the weak link in my data security plan. I think I prefer that my backup data also be encrypted by Bitlocker and ideally, with the same key as the original. I am hopeful the community will offer advice to improve my data security. Greg

Thanks for finding this - I confirm I wrote it some three years ago. It eventually led to me being banned by Annexcafe.com. I wonder why Peter foldes has posted it again now. Maybe he'll answer this time, eh? 'Flatten and Rebuild' concerns 1 2 3 4

Earlier this year I started a thread expressing concern about the MBR virus. I had many replies and again thank everyone for their contributions. The thread is still available on Google, here:- http://groups.google.co.uk/group/microsoft...e5f99b403a1e451 The final post in that thread was from '-jen' . I noted with dismay that I failed to acknowledge his/her advice and apologise now for my oversight! This was the advice given:- The OP's OS is XP. He should instead boot from the Recovery Console and type: fixmbr. Fixmbr Command Syntax: fixmbr (device_name): device_name = This is where you designate the exact drive location that a master boot …

Can you save a Bitlocker key to a SD Card
by Guest glr- 2 replies
Trying to install Bitlocker on my Dell XPS M1530. It doesn't have TPM so I plan to store the Bitlocker Key on a USB device. Dell Support tells me my 8 in 1 memory card reader is a USB device. I mention that because I want to save the Bitlocker Key to an SD Card. Easy to pop in / out and easy to carry. Unfortunately, the Bitlocker setup only recognizes a USB thumb drive. Curiously, I can use an SD card as a ReadyBoost drive but not to store the Bitlocker key. Anyone try this or have any suggestions? Greg -- glr Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com

Does bitlocker work without a TPM module or USB Flash Drive?
by Guest piclistguy@yahoo.com- 7 replies

I am about to purchase a Dell M1330, which doesnt offer a TPM module. I also don't want to deal with plugging in a USB Flash drive every time I boot up (which could get stolen with a laptop). I have the following questions regarding Bitlocker #1 Can I still use the Bitlocker feature of Windows Vista with a TPM module or USB flash drive? #2 Are there any articles that document how secure Bitlocker is in keeping your data safe if your laptop is stolen? #3 If for some reason that operating system gets corrupt, is there a way to extract my data off of the hard drive if I have the encryption keys? Thanks

Vundo Virus! Heeeelp!
by Guest johnmonek- 3 replies

Dear Community, My laptop is infected with the Vundo.gen!Y virus. Initially there were two files containing this virus: Win32/Vund.D and Vundo.gen!Y. The antivirus software McAffee and MS OneCare were not able to remove them both, only the first one. I performed some research and discovered how to remove the Vundo virus manually. The OneCare safety scanner's report listed the following: Virus and spyware scan: 1 item detected, 1 issue found Registry cleaner scan: 529 invalid items found Disk cleanup scan: 11.2 MB of temporary files found Disk fragmentation scan: 25% fragmented Open ports scan: 0ports open As you can see, it was informative, but not h…

Is this real??
by Guest pat- 14 replies

Hi, I was just browsing and suddenly got a popup saying they were Microsoft (and looking like Microsoft) telling me that I had multiple viruses and worms. The address was "websecurityexamine.com" It was hard to get rid of-I just kept clicking the "x" Several times it popped up with the "run, open" dialog box. I'm using ZoneAlarm which I can't wait to get rid of, but it is in place. This isn't real, is it? I've never had anything pop up like this... Thanks for your help. -- pat
