I have a Vista Ultimate on my system. I want to defrag some specific directories/files, so I have downloaded "Contig" (sysinternals toolset) from the Microsoft site. When I try to run this tool as normal user I got "Access Denied" message. I have logged in as the System Administrator and got the same "Access Denied" message. How can I run the "Contig" tool on Vista? What are the proper settings? Thank you in advance. NJ

Security Id's for "Program Files" folders?
by Guest Richard B- 1 reply

I had a strange thing happen to me yesterday that got me to investigating. One of my game programs, which I had just finished playing with a couple hours before, refused to start telling me that I did not have permission to start that program. I went to the program files folder to look at the security tab. It was true, my User Id (an Administrator) was not in the list of user names. I was able to add it, but that got me looking around and there are dozens of folders out there just like it. Some have my user id others do not. Then I looked at the "Program Files" folder itself. I was not in the user names list there either. But here I COULD NOT ad…

user profiles/ family safety

Hello all, I am new here so I'll explain as well as I can. I am administrator using admin account/. I have locked several drives from the guest account using security tab in properties. I installed family safety and windows live was set to auto complete the password. Now when I use the internet in Guest profile the family safety scanner auto completes. I want the guest profile locked down. The auto complete is disabled as admin however this is not transferring to the guest account. Hopefully its an oversight and will not be too complex to solve. -- barnyb3

It was working ok at least it came on when I turned it on but now it dosen't want to run at all. If I could get it running is this program good enough for virus and malware etc. or could you recomend something better to use. Newbie AUC Problem
by Guest PT- 6 replies

Brand new Vista Ultimate 64 bit user. I try to open the C: Docs and Settings folder, so I can tweak and edit the Start Programs layout. I get an "access denied" message. I'm the sole user on the machine. I was given to understand that this is an AUC problem. I went to the Security Center, and I thought succeeded in turning off AUC. But after a restart, I'm still locked out of Docs and Settings. If I right click the folder and select Properties | Security | Administrators, Every Permission except "Special permissions is checked "allow". If I go back to the "Turn AUC On/Off" screen, It appears only to offer the "turn it on" option. So what's…

by Guest Jerry Banasik- 2 replies

I have a new server that seems to be lacking full permissions for Domain Admins. Here is the background and problem: - Windows 2003 domain controllers - All existing servers have the latest updates - Windows 2003 R2 on servers involved - "A" & "B" - Server "A" was renamed to server "B" - Removed from the domain - Renamed to "B" - Rejoined the domain - Server "B" is to be dismantled when server "A" is fully operational - Server "A" was re-created from scratch on new hardware - All updates were applied to server "A" before joining the domain - Domain Admin can login into the server "A" - Domain Admin on server "A" cannot execute programs, download files o…

by Guest Harry- 2 replies

Every time I start up my computer (wich now takes 3 minutes against 1 minute normally) I get the following security error message in the event log: Unable to initialize the security package Kerberos for server side authentication. The data field contains an error number. I have tried to solve this thru Google but without any luck. There have been no installations of new soft or hardware, and I begin to suspect that some Vista update is responsible. (I use Vista Bus.) Please help. Harry (Netherlands)

Hi, I was looking into the Event logs on my Vista system and found the following error message: "The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because the shadow copy storage could not grow due to a user imposed limit." After I perform a disk clean and delete the shadow copies, my System drive (C:) is about 26GB. How do I increase the shadow copy storage and avoid this error message? Thank you in advance. Wish you all a Happy New Year! Regards, NJ

I don't think you should keep this important information away from those who really need to know, Mr Foldes. I had geat difficulty with one word you used (an odd one for a retired electrician, I thought) but I found an answer here http://www.homogenic.net/ What you actually said:- "As a retired electrician I can confidently tell you that leaving something electrical on all day will use less energy then opening and closing it 3 times Leaving the computer on all the time will not do harm to the system and will use up less energy. My servers are on 24\365 with the exceptions when I insert or take out Hard Drives or upgrade hardware" I wonder if …
