MSN Toolbar included with Sun Java Security 'updates' 1 2
by Guest MowGreen [MVP]- 38 replies

Beware of the opt-out behavior of Sun's java automatic updater. In the US, at least, the MSN toolbar comes PREchecked [opt-out] and will install along with purported java 'security' updates. Said 'security' updates are presented as the latest version of Sun's java runtime. Including crappy toolbars with security updates as an opt-out is a REALLY dumb, shortsighted decision. Shame on MS for doing so. As to Sun's java, who needs it ? If a site requires java, then avoid it like the plague. Especially any site that does financial transactions. I have really had it with a certain person in this forum. I will not be baited into name calling or falling down to his level. To rid myself of the aggravation, I have added him to what is known as my "bozo bin". He is only the 2nd person to ever have their name added. From this point: 1) I do not see his postss 2) I will not repond in threads in which he participates 3) I will try and continue to support the community Thanks for letting me vent and your continued support Brian

SSPI Kerberos for delegation
by Guest Kasparov- 3 replies

Hi, We want the authentication to happen without providing credentials anywhere. For this we are planning to use Windows SSPI. Now the problem I am facing is once the authentication from client to server is successful, I want to use the security context created in server to connect back and authenticate to the client. I am trying to find out if this thing is possible with SSPI. For this I have written an application (prototype) with client side and server side. I am connecting to the server and after successfully authentication at the server side I try to connect back (to the server component on the client machine, running in the same process and threa…

If I change the password for a service account without modifying the password on the service, how long does it take to go down? Does the service try to authenticate periodically? Does it try to authenticate again only after a restart? Thanks, Felipe

User access control (UAC) annoyance
by Guest Neil Jones- 4 replies

Hi, I have Vista Ultimate on my laptop. All the tools and software packages are have been installed on my system for a while and are running fine. Yesterday, I have upgraded a tool called "Quick Media Converter". I like this tool, however, everytime I invoke this program I get the "User Access Control" window prompting for the administrator's password. None of the other applications have this issue. Is there anyway I can install this program with user lever permissions to avoid this annoying prompt? Please let me know if there is another way to stop this UAC window for this application(i.e. without disabling the UAC)? Thank you in advance. NJ

Vundo Trojan Problems
by Guest Philip Michener- 16 replies

I was recently infected with the Vundo Trojan and have had problems ridding myself of it. Windows Malicious Software Removal finds the trojan, but gives the message that it was only partially removed. Then tell me to run a full scan with antivirus software to complete the removal. I have tried McAfee, XSoft, Lavasoft, and Spydoctor, but they all fail to find the remaining files. Meanwhile, system gets reinfected, and popups start all over again. Anyone have suggestions as to how I can finally kill this bastard!

Custom FTP Client Vs Windows XP Firewall (SP2) - SIGEM app We have a custom FTP client app (made by a customer) used to Upload docs. Insted a standard FTP is used a home-made FTP client because the app generates a "receipt" fo the uploaded docs. We have several problems using this particular software and only if we disable XP Firewall the app works well. In the Vista OS works fine. The Firewall admin captures some traffic and observed a lot of packets with less than 4 KB with XP firewall enalbled and with Firewall disabled the size of the packets are bigger and the performance of the app really improves. The app cannont be "re-written", and i canÂ…

Vista Security Center Service Can't Start
by Guest ianc1505- 7 replies

I have been installing, using and unistalling several anti spyware, anti malware and anti virus programmes one after another in a vain attempt to get rid of "em.pc-on-internet.com" pop-unders on my standalone PC running on Vista Home Premium. I finally managed to stop the pop-unders (at least for the moment) by downloading and running a programme called ComboFix. I also followed it's suggestion to delete all prior Restore Points. Unfortunately, now the Security Center Service does not run on start up, although Defender and Firewall seem to be working OK, as does the installed anti virus (NOD 32 by ESET). At least I don't keep getting the annoying "User…

From: "Max in KL" <Max in KL@discussions.microsoft.com> Subject: A fix for FileError_22001 Date: 16 December 2008 15:32 Has anybody found a fix for FileError_22001? Why are all the anti virus companies so quiet on this virus, I spent an hour in a chat room with Norton, no help, no advice, just the offer three times of connecting straight to my computer for 120 AU$ which I found strange as I live in malaysia. I have lost over 3,000 photo's due to the corruption caused by FileError_22001 I'm guessing there are lots of others badly affected loosing word, excel and JPEG files to the ravages of this nasty Malware. My fiance is really upset as …
