Installedcodec a malware?
by Guest Michael Walraven- 6 replies

McAfee has reported that a program I have had installed for some time is malware. Specifically the program Installedcodec.exe from nirsoft is a Trojan "New Malware.jj" I haven't used it in some time but seemed to be OK when I did so. Anyone know if this is a false positive by McAfee? (I have already Googled for answer, no data but perhaps this is new). Michael

Backup strategies??
by Guest Neil Jones- 20 replies

I have a 500GB backup disk to which I did a complete backup of my system about 3 times now. Although I am not really running out of space, I would like to keep the maximum number of backups to 3 or 4 with the oldest being the most reliable backup. How do I implement such backup procedure without using additional disk space? Thank you in advance for any help. NJ

WinMail Vista 64 can't see/use Personal Digital Certs
by Guest Fast Turtle- 0 replies

I'm having problems with Win Mail accessing any personal certs - instead it wants to get digital id's and goes to the Office 2007 marketplace website with IE. These certs were just issued by Thwate Freemail and according to IE I've got the private keys, so there shouldn't be any problems with them. I Do have Word/Excel/Powerpoint of Office 2007 Pro (Access and Outlook available if needed), which could explain some of the Office 2007 Marketplace for Digital Certs issue but I'd like to get my new certs working in Win Mail so any help is appreciated.

I also wish to disable ping but am unable to. I tried enabling the 'File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request - xxx)' rules etc and changing the setting to 'Block the connections'. So how do we disable ping? Rob. Vista rootkit issue? All legit software. Open an .wav folder with a few wav files and hard-drive goe
by Guest Bob- 2 replies

Hi I have Windows Vista Home Premium pre-installed on my new HP laptop. Every time I go to open a folder that has audio, ripped from a CD, in .wav format, my hard-drive goes overtime, running almost 100% constantly. System responsiveness to a single-click is about 30 to 60 seconds. This is the definite trigger, (the folder). I have Norton Internet Security 2007, not my first choice of av software installed, and I also run Windows Defender. I update regularly and run IE with very tight security settings. I recently purchased and installed Ashampoo Burning Studio 7, as my burning needs are for simple document backups. I ripped my first audio CD si…

Internet Explorer Add-on Installer

I just tried to access a National Weather Service site to view radar images (because of local weather warnings). http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=gsp...ct=NCR&loop=yes When trying to view the Composite Reflectivity Loop (enhanced version), the Information Bar popped up telling me that IE had stopped the site from installing an Active-X control. When I clicked to install the control (I certainly trust _this_ site), the User Account Control came up and asked for administrator permission to install the control. I clicked continue and then got back the message that "Windows has blocked the software because it cannot verify the publisher." There …

Hello. I have 14 users in different parts of the U.S. all running Vista Business. I have configured their Administrator accounts with a password which they do not know, so they run their machines as-is and cannot install anything. Here's my problem - I need to install PowerPoint Viewer on all the machines, but that would require me telling them the Administrator password. Can I deliver the ppt viewer app to them in some kind of "package" in which I could include the Administrator credentials? In other words, the "package" would run the install and supply the Administrator credentials when appropriate. Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions will be gr…

Could anyone recommend an enterprise antivirus solution for a network with more than 100 computers? I have tried Symantec Endpoint protection, and well it's more like a virus than many of the so called viruses I have seen. I want something that just catches viruses and spyware. I don't want a firewall I don't want a anti spam solution I don't want a privacy guard I don't want a intrusion detection system I don't want a self monitoring tampering system I don't want a centralized quarantine server I don't want a centralized SQL database reporting server that gets overloaded with messages and crashes I just want a file system scanning antivirus progra…

The problem I have is that every time I try to run an Office app it kicks off Windows Installer and tries to re-install the component of Office I am trying to run. This inevitably fails because it never prompts me to run as admin, even though I am logged in as an administator, with the error, "Microsoft Office [app] has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application." I click [OK] and the app closes. Workarounds I have found for this problem are to disable UAC, check the "Run as Administrator" box in the file properties of the executeable, and right click the executeable and select "Run as Administrator". Does anyo…

Q: Digital certificate inventory within network?
by Guest x13- 6 replies
Hi all. If I want to see the digital certificates installed on a specific server, I MSTSC to the server, run CERTMGR and export desired certificates (list) with Actions / Export list. This results in a TXT or CSV file I can then import into Excel; but this process is purely interactive, and must be repeated on each server. Then, all the text files have to be merged and sorted to get a general overview. Which is by no means difficult, but it's a pain in the ass... With this overview I can plan certificate renewals and see which server has which certificate installed. So how can I create a list of installed digital certificates on servers of my choosing?…
