In late October, Microsoft gave its beta testers the first beta build of Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. On Tuesday, the company pushed out a later build to MSDN and TechNet subscribers. The five languages currently supported are English, German, French, Spanish, and Japanese, in both 32- and 64-bit flavors. Today, the company has made this SP2 build available to the public on the Microsoft Download Center: for Vista and Server 2008 32-bit (388MB ), for Vista and Server 2008 64-bit (614MB ), and for Server 2008 ia64 (416MB ). -=-

[X-post to Vista Security newsgroup] How long have you been running Vista, Jack? (Unlike WinXP, rhe true Administrator in Vista is a hidden profile.) How does your first question pertain to IE? If you Save an MHT file to your hard-drive, right-click on the file and select "Run as Administrator," does it open? -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ Just Jack wrote:<span style="color:blue"> > I constantly get the message that I am NOT the administrator (user) when > using IE 7. Hello! I appreciate this forum and the help you provide and hopefully you guys can help me with this annoying problem. I am running a Windows Vista on an HP 32-bit laptop system. I somehow acquired that "Windows Antivirus 2009" on my system and I have the following security software on my computer (I disable some of them sometimes which I maybe should not have done): McAfee, Spybot Search & Destroy, Combofix, Vundofix, Windows Defender, the paid online version of PandaSecurity anti-virus scan (which is usually very good!), and UniBlue spyeraser. I ran these various programs multiple times and before I ran these scans, my computer was absolutely horren…

I'm attempting to RD to my Vista machine from XP machine, but the XP one is not on same domain. Therefore, I'm unable to "add user" from the Vista RD settings. There are both on the same network and can ping each other. Do both machines need to be on same domain? If so, then I'd rather revert to VNC or something similar where if I can ping the damned IP, I can login with user/pwd. frustrated in Denver.

Windows Explorer exposes passwords in plaintext -- more details
by Guest Brian Knittel- 2 replies
In August I reported that Windows Explorer can put the password to an FTP site into your URL history in plaintext when you use Explorer to view a password-protected FTP directory (e.g. one that does not permit anonymous access). I have a little more information about this now. The issue occurs only on XP SP3, and only under limited circumstances. One way to have it occur is to double-click a ZIP file in the FTP directory view. Explorer appears to invoke Internet Explorer to download the file, IE passes the downloaded file back to Explorer, and Explorer opens and displays the ZIP. Somewhere in this process, the password to the FTP site is stored in plain…

Can't enable or disable programs in Security Center
by Guest leeherman99- 0 replies

I find that I am no longer able to change the status of programs in the Security Center. The enable/disable buttons are gone. A link tells me that a Group Policy has resulted in this problem, but I am not part of a network, I run Home Premium, and I am the only administrator. Has anyone seen this happen before, and what is the solution? Lee -- leeherman99

Live OneCare vs AVG ? 1 2
by Guest Amanda- 26 replies

I've been given a new Windows Live OneCare subscription to try, and I currently use AVG Internet Security, for 3 home computers, all running Vista. I'd like to know if Onecare is something I should give up the AVG for. I have a subscription with AVG through Feb of next year, (paid for) so I don't want to give it up unless there is particulary good benefit from it. Could someone give a review of these two programs? -- Amanda B

Critical Update
by Guest AliceZ- 8 replies

Yesterday when I signed on with my Vista and went to Critical Updates, I saw there was an update: Windows update agent 7.2.6001.788 I clicked OK for the download. When the download finished, I was immediately transferred out of Critical Update page and back to my Google page. I looked in the Update History and saw the the Windows Update Agent was successfully installed. Today when I turned on the Vista, I saw that it was going through steps 1-3 (saying please do not turn off computer). When the steps 1-3 finished, the computer screen came on. I went again to Critical Update, but it would not go through. I kept getting this message: windows could not s…

Lan shows up as Unidentified Network
by Guest Khogle- 1 reply

When I view my networks, instead of having my LAN listed, it shows up as "unidentified network limited connectivity". It doesn't affect my online experience, at least not yet. I am new to Vista. So far it is OK, but still new to the experience. I grew to like XP after a while, so maybe Vista will grow on me. So, any idea why this happens. Never happened with XP. My access is set as public, as it is stated to be the most safe. -- -- NOTICE: Due to Presidential Executive Orders, the National Security Agency may have read this email without warning, warrant, or notice, and certainly without probable cause. Adware infection
by Guest Jo-Anne- 9 replies

This weekend my computer suddenly slowed way down, and I briefly saw a "blank screen" window in IE that shouldn't have been there. My OS is WinXP SP3, fully updated. My antivirus is NIS 2008. Last night I ran the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, which found nothing. Today I downloaded Spyware Blaster and SuperAntiSpyware. I ran SuperAntiSpyware, and it found 14 instances of Adware tracking cookies and 31 files for Adware Vundo Variant/Rel. It removed everything, and I restarted my computer, which now seems to be running at its usual speed. Is there anything else I should do to make sure my computer is clean? Thank you! Jo-Anne
