I love Dave
by Guest Venus- 5 replies

I have always loved Dave. He and I have always been in love. From the first day that we met, we knew we blonged together and we hoped that nothing would come between us. We both knew our relationship was too good to be true. Unfortunately, evil prevailed and interferred with our relationship. Now, only fate and God can only bring us back together.

Latest Windows Vista updates
by Guest carina- 9 replies

On re-booting after Windows updates KB954459, KB957097, KB955069 my PC would not re-start, had to do an automatic system restore. The error code received was 0x80242016. I've noticed from the forums a number of other people have had problems after these updates. Does anyone know if there is a fault in one of these updates or is it just coincidence ? Also does anyone know exactly what the above error code means ?

Thanks for any help.</span> I am having the same problem with Vista Business, SP1. I looked into quite a number of newsgroups including MS TechNet and MS online Help. All solutions explained there do not help. To make things simple, I deleted every recovery certificate from my computer (it is in a network domain), and our domain-wide rule is set to "no recovery agent necessary". I also created new certificates, both for EFS and for EFS agent r…

Critical Update "Windows Update Agent"
by Guest AliceZ- 0 replies
Yesterday (on desktop and 17") I checked for Critical Updates and before it would do the check, it stated that it had to update the Windows Critical Update, which it did and then I could see if there were any critical updates. No critical updates for either PC (which have WinXPsp3). However, tonight I did the same on the Vista and also got a message about the Critical Update site needing to be updated. I clicked on OK and then the computer had that 'green' bar going from left to right for a fairly long time (a few minutes), and then it just stopped and switched back to the Scandoo page. I went back to the Critical Update and did a search for Critical upda…

Auditing files and folders
by Guest gscanga- 0 replies
I've enabled auditing on our file server by enabling the "Audit Objects" policy within the systems Local Policy settings - both Success and Failures. I then went to the root of the folder and drilled into the Advanced Security settings to add the 'Domain Users' group and only checked the options for Successful 'Delete', 'Delete Subfolders and Files', and 'Change Permissions'. However when I review the Security logs, I see 'Object Access' category entries that specify 'Joe User' accessed this file with 'READ ATTRIBUTES' permissions. These, of course, are extraneous entries and aren't what I'm looking for. Can anyone shed some light on why these entrie…

For some unknown reason, Internet Explorer has ceased to function. Reason: DEP keeps the program from loading. I get a warning box telling me that DEP has shut down Explorer to protect my computer. I am running Vista Ultimate and have had no previous problems. Appreciate some guidance. Thanks.

Vista: "Run as..." while UAC disabled
by Guest kakii- 5 replies
I made recently following experience with my vista business 32bits. UAC disabled. When logged on as an user from adminstrative group my 3rd party firewall can't be started with administrative privileges. Attempts to change settings of that firewall result in error message like "You haven't sufficient access rights". Starting that firewall using "Run as..." doesn't help. Applications can't be started with administrative access rights if logged-in as limited rights user and using "Run as..." option. While using run-as I expect to get administrator password prompt. That doesn't occur. After having selected run-as option from icon's context menu the application…

802.1X & WiFi fails at EAP-Response/Identity
by Guest Gos- 0 replies

Hello, I have a small issue with 802.1X-authentication. Basically, it halts - and I want to kick it off again. =) The setup consist of - WinXP w/ SP2 (WZC and native supplicant software) - Cisco 4400 Wireless Controller - Win2K3 IAS - EAP-PEAP w/ MSChapv2 (WPA-TKIP) And this is how the story goes. The client has been configured to connect to the wireless network with an EAP-START and logs in either using the logon-credentials or manually type it. What happens: When connecting, Windows just stays at the same daft "Waiting for the network"-picture. If we go a bit under the skin, we'll learn the following statements are true: - Client sends EA…

Security (Keep the admin out of the workstation)
by Guest Greg (codepug@gmail.com)- 5 replies

Hello I am interested in securing a workstation. Currently the workstation is connected to a Windows 2000 server, and gets access to the internet cable service through the server. The user is concerned that a system admin is getting onto his workstation, through the LAN, and stealing files from his drive. How can the user protect from this activity. He needs to use the internet, but only needs to occasional access the LAN. My thought was for the user to put a manual switch on the ethernet LAN cable to connect at the time of his choice, and to keep his private data on a thumb drive that is used only when he is not connected to the LAN. He always needs to hav…

Eraser and file metadata
by Guest Neil Jones- 2 replies
I have been using Eraser software which overwrites the file with random data several times to make it unrecoverable. Recently, I have attended the Forensics class offered by SANS. When it came to the topic of metadata, some of the classmates mentioned that Eraser works only at the application level. This confused me a bit. My question now is, does Eraser delete the data and metadata as well? If not, then how do you delete metadata? How do you cleanup the metadata at the file system level? I use Eraser on Vista and Linux. Thank you in advance. NJ

When looking at a hijackthis log today (not my own) I copied this item: http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&t...rio&pf=desktopI pasted same into Internet Explorer (IE7) address bar, clicked and I was actually taken here:http://www.aol.co.uk/?src=compaq-desktop.aol.comI did the same thing with my AOL browser and ended up at the same place:http://www.aol.co.uk/?src=compaq-desktop.aol.comThis was to be expected, I suppose, as AOL is based on/uses IE AFAICT.I then carried out a similar exercise with Firefox (3.0.4)and was taken here:http://compaq-desktop.aol.com/In all cases the 'final' site was the main AOL 'master' Web page. www.aol.com I Find…

Changes to folder permissions not taking effect on Server 2008
by Guest schnell- 2 replies
We have a new 2008 Server setup to replace an Apple OSX server. Our first Windows file server in years so bear with me. I have a share created and gave read access to the department using it. The Data folder below that gives the department R/W access to everything. There are only 2 special access folders, on which I turned off 'Include Inherited Permissions from this objects parent' and removed the department from the list. Then I added an Active Directory group and gave them R/W. At this point my test account could browse the whole Data structure, but not see the special access folders. Good. Then I added my test account to that AD group to verify acc…
