Why those different names?
by Guest Øyvind Granberg- 15 replies

Hi... Why does the different antivirus and malware software producer have different names for the same virus, trojan horse and so on...? When I am looking for a solution and go to Grisofts webpages I cannot find what I am looking for, even though I know for certain that the threat in question is in their list. I have to resort to Google or the more comprehensive lex at www.nai.com Her is a list from www.nai.com showing the different names for the same trojan: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_150513.htm Why the different names? Shouldn't it be a lot more efficient countermalwarevice to operate with the same naming policy? -- Vennlig hilsen …

by Guest DanH- 3 replies

I've had a couple of malicious software infections. Specifically, Windows malicious software removal tool reported finding and removing Horst.v, then ClamAV reported finding and removing Trojan.Agent-54500. Afterwards, I've noticed that some of the registry manipulations listed at <http://www.threatexpert.com/report.aspx?md5=9ff130ceea045a43416c50a739510b6a> have happened. At the moment, I'm particularly concened that: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\system\DisableTaskMgr and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\system\DisableRegistryTools were set to 1. I can set them back …

"replace a process level token" security
by Guest bstillion- 0 replies

This security setting is in the Default Domain Controller Policy and typically includes the local system account. What security concerns are there by giving user accounts this right including "Authenticated Users"? Reason for the question: On a locked down PC, a user needs to open Internet Explorer and get access to a share. One of the desktop support developers has created a WINBATCH script to do this. -- BStillion Portland ME

Good morning all, We have been having a problem with a repeat vulnerability on one of our IIS 6.0 boxes: --------- Vulnerability Identified: IIS localstart.asp Authentication Prompt Severity: Medium Description: The Microsoft IIS server has a localstart.asp file and it is protected by NTLM authentication. I would like to know if someone can describe to me the meaning of the "2" within this string: %SystemRoot%\system32\ftp.exe,2,"D:PAR(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)(A;OICI;FA;;;SY) Does the 2 after the FTP represent the switch for "passive mode" or is this a permissions all switch. I've looked and haven't been able to find the correct syntax or other selections for this. Any and all help would be appreciated.

My father-in-law has windows vista home premium. He can no longer get any automatic updates, this generates error code 80246008. Support information refers to a corrupt BITS service. However, the BITS service is missing among the Services. Downloading files from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940520 does not restore the BITS service. Can anyone advise? Many thanks, Koen

dnsChange virus 1 2
by Guest Øyvind Granberg- 47 replies

Hi... As a continuance of the thread "Do I have a virus?" Well it's back. The Trojan.DNSChanger virus has really never left the building. I have downloaded and paid for software called Malwarebytes and it finds six instances of this virus. I choose to remove them, and the software wants to restart my computer. After reboot, a rerun of Malwarebytes shows that my system is clean. Then IE8 is started. All of a sudden I cannot connect to any website, not even google A new run of Malwarebytes reveals yet another six instances of the same virus. A checkup on all other computers in the household tells a tale of a massive outburst. I've got my ISP to re…

Lambs to the slaughter perhaps?
by Guest ~BD~- 18 replies

I did not come to these groups to solve my malware problems, rather to investigate how, and by whom, machines are infected in the first place. I basically trust no-one and don't believe something simply because it is showing on a screen in front of me. Nor do I blindly follow 'instructions' from any Tom, Dick or Harry. The average guy who proceeds to a forum, downloads all manner of magical programmes to help fix his /her PC (under instruction, of course) will have absolutely no idea if their machine has really been cleaned - as long as it 'works', that will be sufficient. Lambs to the slaughter perhaps? <smile>

Database backup using Scheduled Tasks
by Guest Magnus.Moraberg@gmail.com- 6 replies

Hi, I'm working on a Windows 2000 machine which hosts a SQL 2005 Express Database. This database is backed up using the following method - http://www.sqldbatips.com/showarticle.asp?ID=27 As part of this method, I have a Task which is scheduled to run once a day. All words fine until I need to change my password. When I am prompted to change my password every month or so, I need to go back into the Scheduler and update my password there also. Otherwise my backup process will fail. How can I solve this problem? Another problem is that I will be soon handing the database over to another employee at the company who will then be in charge of maintaining i…

Smartcard offline login and XP laptops
by Guest Tariq- 5 replies

Can anyone provide me with some guidance and recommendations on the use of smartcards and offline login with Windows XP based client laptops? My organization currently issues XP based laptops attached to our corporate domain to our global user base. The current image/configuration uses cached login's to enable offline login using a user's AD credentials to the local machine. I'm in the midst of deploying a Windows 2008 based PKI environment to support smartcard based logins. We're going to be deploying smartcards with mandatory login to a small number of laptop users, but I'd like to see that they have the same functionality as our non-smartcard base…

I am currently using Norton Internet Security 2007, for both my recently purchased laptop and my older desktop computer. I have seen the reviews for the 2008 version and I'm not very confident in getting it. I wanted to get some recommendations on security software that I can buy that includes the whole package, like a firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware etc. I know to stay away from Computer Associates and PC-cillin as I've tried those and pretty much wasted my money with both, so I've had Norton for a while now. and Mcaffe ive heard it sucks so im not going there either Can I have the whole name and not abberviations so I can look up the software? …
