let me start off by saying this problem is just killing my braincells. i have read your forums for quite some time now and, well, i needed to join because im just at a total loss to whats going on, and nothing on google or yahoo has shown up. Heres story: Friend calls me while im at work, and says, whats up with rundll32 error. from my experience especially since i have spybot adaware avg and other things that i trim my pc with. I simply remark oh thats usually a messup with the display card or a small dll error (it was more technical than that). I go home slick close error and i think all is fine. I didnt bother getting up on the pc and doing scans and all th…

I have a vista harddrive from my laptop that has failed to boot vista yet it is still accessible through a external usb enclosure. I am trying to get at the user\local settings folder from a different computer(XP) to get to my Outlook 2003 datafiles. Those folders are not accessible. I know the usernames and passwords for those user accounts. How can I access these through windows explorer to be able to copy the outlook data files to my new harddisk. I am guessing I need to input a user and password someplace?

Major Problem with PKI - CA
by Guest Randy Smith- 2 replies

Hello everyone, Not sure why...or how...but my windows based PKI stopped working yesterday afternoon. The issuing CA won't start...says the CRL can not be contacted. I can browse to my CRL in IE...open it...and I noticed immediately that the Next Update date and time has passed (was yesterday afternoon). I thought this was updated regularly by the CA. How can I get my devices authenticating quickly and ensure this does not happen again? Thanks! Randy

Since yesterday every time I tried to open Internet Explorer it would say there was an error and ask me if I wanted to send an error report. It's getting frustrating I can't surf the web. I'm still connected to the internet ..AIM works fine, I just can't surf the web. My friend sent me Firefox and it's been tempermental...everytime I search on Google I can't click on a legitimate website. It'll say it's wikipedia or amazon or dillards, etc. but it'll bring me to one of those annoying spam shopping websites. My virus scan/ad-aware scan didn't show anything. I know it's not 100% but I also tried doing both scans in safe mode. Any explinations? What s…

How can I tell if a keylogger got added to my PC while I was in Beijing? 1 2 3 4

I was in Beijing, and I used my Windows PC there with a freeware firewall and freeware anti virus and freeware malware scanners. Recently a friend said nearly all American travelers were to be warned by the State Department that their laptops, if left in the hotel, were almost certainly compromised. How could I tell if a keylogger or other spyware was inserted onto my laptop by the Chinese?

BitLocker - how to change startup key?
by Guest groffg- 1 reply
I have a machine w/ TPM-less BitLocker. I'd like to change the startup key (stored on USB, of course) to something else. I thought disabling (but not decrypting) BitLocker & then re-enabling it would do the trick. Alas, that does not work. Re-enabling BitLocker just produces the same startup key. Is there a way to do this that doesn't involve decrypting & then re-encrypting the drive? Seems like such a common task (like doing a "change password"), but I'm not seeing a way to do it in the GUI or using the manage-bde.wsf script. -- groffg Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com

Hi All; I am trying to connect to the WRT160N Wireless Router by typing http://192.168.1.1/ I have used both IE 7 and Safari and neither will bring up the Logon Window. I get the Error Message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." I then click on "Diagnose Connection Problems" and a new Windows Pop up states: "192.168.1.1" is not set up to establish a connection on port "World wide web service (http)" with this computer. Operating System is Windows Vista Home Premium and all Microsoft Updates have been done. Please advise how I can access the Router to make changes. I have already checked the "ipconfig /all" and 192.168.1.1 is the correct D…

Re: Denied permission to access folders

I just tried Jimmy Brush's suggestion and it worked fine, except for the little error created by the insertion of the sad face in the command string. I tried every combination of letters and characters I could think of until I googled the search string and saw that it should read: Type: icacls . /grant USER:(OI)(CI)(F) /L /T /Q So, since my user name was owner-pc, the correct string to type in the command line would be: icacls . /grant owner-pc:(OI)(CI)(F) /L /T /Q Once I typed in that string, it immediately granted me access to all the files in the folder. Another trick is to find your real user name. I always assumed it was my screen name, but it…

Bug ( error ) in IP Security Policy , is there a patch /fix for th
by Guest Bill Simard- 5 replies

I am running 2000 Server and in the IP security policy I can add IP ranges to block, ex. 77.0.0.0 with a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0 to block the entire 77.0.0.0-77.255.255.255 range, but When I try to do this for the higher ranges, ex: 193.0.0.0 with a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0 to block the entire 193.0.0.0-193.255.255.255 range, it will not work. It gives me an Invalid Net Mask message and will not let me go any farther. I tried this on XP and XP has no problems accepting the higher ranges. I tried exporting the policy from XP to 2000, but it will not work. You can go from 2000 to XP, but not vice-versa, must be a compatibility thing. Does an…
