You can probably tell I'm not not very computer savvy !! Any thoughts Swiss Steve

Zlob.Trojan 1 2 3
by Guest Hubert Rétif- 50 replies

Hello, On many PCs (XP Pro SP2) by one of my customer and also by one of mines, I have shortly discovered the Trojan Zlob. By most of them it seems to be "inactive". Only on one PC, it has launch Popups trying to sell an "XP Security suite". Some of these PCs have no data exchange together. All are inside a VPN network. A scan with McAfee does not see it. I could only removed it with SpyHunter from Enigma Software company. Looking for more information about this trojan (from where is it mostly coming from, is it really dangerous), I did not found very much. Perhaps can someone tells more here. My main question: is Windows Defender a good solution …

Security - read only
by Guest jesuswasacoolguy- 1 reply

Windows vista allows the change of file property ie. hidden, read-only. Believing it would keep my files secure, I switched to read-only (in case anybody tries to change anything). That's the problem. I tried to 'unread'-only all the files but it just doesnt work that way. Installing file shredder softwares also don't work as it replies that the files are "in use and can't be deleted". Now, I can't delete the items (even though using administrator access) and also can't make any change myself (even though logged in using the same account). How do I solve this issue? Reformat the computer? Thanks!

RE: Application Data

For in-house tools, the approach of writing to the program files folder is fine. Here are a few ways that it can be problematic if the code goes out of your team, such as to a customer: 1. Vista - Must run with elevated permissions to access program files folder. 2. 64 bit OS - Virtualization pottentially renames the folder, so you better not assume it is c:\program files. 3. XP - Most organizations don't allow users admin priveledge, and the admin people will not change the permissions on the program files folder. 4. Since this is a service, you are asking a lot from the IT department if this is not run under "local service" account. On top of that, ask…

Can't download exe 1 2
by Guest joemast2007- 32 replies
I'm running Vista Home Premium. When I try to download an exe file, the download is blocked and I get a message saying it's because of security concerns. When I click for more info, it tells me I can allow the download if I go to Microsoft Mail ( a program I don't use) and clear a check box. I do this but I still can't make the downloads. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this problem? -- joemast2007

Choose a Digital Certificate Blank!!
by Guest Ryan Hanisco- 3 replies

Hello everyone, I have a web site that uses Certificate Authentication for user identity. My CA issues certificates to the end users and the web site inspects the certificate properties to allow users into the site. The CA is a private CA that uses a self-signed cert at the top level. On all non-Vista operating systems, everything works well. When Vista requests the cert, it prompts me that it needs to add the Trusted Root Cert for the CA.. I do this and make sure that it places the Root Cert in the Trusted Root Cert area. Then the personal cert installs correctly. I can use the Cert MMC to see that the root is there and that the client cert is …

RE: Application Data
by Guest Anteaus- 0 replies

The user's Application Data directory is mainly there for 'userization' so that the data is different for every useraccount. If the settings or data are to be per-user then you should put it here. For data which applies to all users, the approved route is to put the data into the All Users\Application Data profile. The issue here is that most people (and most backup programs!) will not even recognise that data is being stored here, and this creates a backup/data loss issue. You could (as is being done) put the data in Program Files, and change its permissions. Key point is that this is not approved, and may raise problems with future Windows release…

Do not pay attention to those who recommend this crap software. I uninstalled it and the icons cannot be removed from the desktop! I can neither drag and drop them in the recycle bin nor right-click them and delete. Why the hell are the MVPs recommending something like this to people?

Our infrastructure team put together a certificate server. But how do we make this thing useful for our user community? We would like them to be able to digitally sign documents, forms, etc. The users need their certificates automatically provisioned and centralled stored so they are ready to use from where ever they log in. Is there a guide to getting that set up? Thanks!

Trojan-Win.32 problems
by Guest jenjo200- 9 replies

First a disclaimer: I'm computer illiterate, so please talk to me like I'm a neanderthal. That being said, I've reviewed the posts from September 18th for this spyware pop-up, but they aren't helping me. I cannot access the recommended website to post my Hijack log. I don't know if the Trojan spyware is preventing me from doing so or what. I could really use some step by step assistance to walk me through this. If anyone could help me, I'd greatly appreciate it. In addition to the flashing yellow triangle and the pop-up System alert warning, I also get a window trying to direct me to download spyware software from "Windows". I am smart enough to kno…

Hidden Group Policy
by Guest ephipps- 1 reply

At the medical center we force the screen saver to come on at a minimum of 15 minutes and lock it to the password due to confidential patient information displayed on the screen when nurses walk away from their workstation. The problem I have is that the previous administrator seems to have hidden a group policy somewhere that sets the screen saver to lockout at 5 minutes. This is not acceptable in a surgery environment. Can someone tell me how to find hidden policies in order to disable or reset them? -- ephipps ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ephipps's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/ephipps.htm …

Re: Denied permission to access folders
by Guest chrayres- 5 replies

I'm having similar issues similar to this. I created my own topic since all scenarios that I've looked up are different and don't seem to work. This one might work, but I think I'm doing something wrong. I'm using Windows XP Pro SP2. I formatted my C: and 3 of 7 folders on my F: are now giving me issues, says Access is Denied. I used to fix it in the Security tab but there isn't one showing. I'm the only user and I'm logged in as the admin. The folder says that there's 0 files and 0 bytes, I only have 70gb free on a 465gb HDD but the folders only add up to 174gb. So there's a couple hundred gigs that are on the drive but are not counting. I tried the…
