Package Installer looks fishy 1 2
by Guest ElizaDoolittle- 28 replies

My question is, if I have installed SP3 from a disk, and also installed the Package Installer update 942288, isn't it fishy that Windows Update tells me I need to install the Package Installer from July 2005? I have nuked and burned my hard drive an embarrassingly large number of times, mostly because I keep finding these things that suggest I am hooked up to a remote server, even though I am a free standing computer. One thing I noticed is that Windows Update insists that, in order to get any other updates, I must first install WGA (all right, already...) and KB898461, the Package Installer released in July 2005, and last reviewed in May 2007. Since…

I recently bought a HP notebook with Windows vista home edition. I dowloaded Windows updates and even though I didn't change any of my account name or password (I'm the administrator), I'm denied access on more than half the folders. I tried changing the ownership on a great deal of folders but even though I checked the otions for the subfolders, it didn't work. It's impossible to change each folders owner, manualy, but even if I do how do I know that the next time I download updatew I won't have the same problem?

Hi, After applying a security patch (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955617) to our servers ,we found that the snapshot viewer would error with an 'Out Of Memory' exception. We managed to roll back to the previous version of the ..ocx but what is the correct route to reporting security patch issues to Microsoft? Looking at other posts on the internet it looks like others have also been affected by this patch. T

ANONYMOUS LOGON Vista Premium, should I be worried?
by Guest Robban- 2 replies

I get up to 50 logins a day on from all different IPs. Particularly one IP keeps reoccuring in the list and that computer is (according to the IP, we got our own network here) a neighbour to me. However, the neighbour IP is still only accounting for roughly 25% of all 'succesful' logins to the anonymous account. Sometimes the IP is shown as logged in for just a minute before logged out and other times its logged in for up to 30 minutes before the logout event appears. I bought Vista in June 2008 and going through my security log shows that this all started from 5th of October 2008. The following is Event ID 4624 and in swedish. --------------------…

Yet another update for WinVista Premium...but wait a minute, it's only just installed that one!!! Can someone please help?! Having turned off 'Automatic updates', cos it was bringing my system to a complete gridlock, I now find that Vista is suffering from cenile behaviour! The update in question is, 'Security update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181). Does anyone know of any recurring problems with this, cos I've downloaded and installed it 5 times. Thanks in advance, Chris -- GodZilla

ConnectServer using impersonation token
by Guest rawprogrammer- 0 replies
Hi. I'm trying to connect to a remote computer in C++, using `IWbemLocator::ConnectServer` method. The hosting process has no permissions to connect, but the current thread is impersonated to a powerful user. The call fails (error code is 0x80070005). In the Security Event Log of the remote machine I can find the authentication request, and the username is the process' user (not the impersonatd user). I've tried to create a new process (Using CreateProcessAsUser), and then all works. It's not good enough because I must do it in the current process. It looks like the problem is in the underlying DCOM layer. Can someone help?

Good afternoon everyone, I'm a home user, and I notice that I'm getting many of these errors in the event viewer. I can't find where this error is coming from. Does anyone know what this is ? All my internet apps (mail, web, chat) seem to work fine. "Windows Firewall was unable to notify the user that it blocked an application from accepting incoming connections on the network. (Error Code: 2, Event ID: 5032, Source: security-auditing) " I tried looking up 5032 in Microsoft's error lookup page, but found nothing. Thanks for any insight you can provide, sincerely, Paul

Whilst trying to make notepad++ the default notepad I tinkered with the permissions. I changed the settings so that any user listed had full control over my PC. Now I want to change them back & only allow the Administrator to have full access. How do I do this please? -- scr621 Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. File xfer from DMZ to internal network - Any recommendations?
by Guest Trust No One®- 3 replies

Hi Folks, I'm after recommendations for software that will allow secure transfer of files and folders from Windows servers in a DMZ to hosts (windows) on the internal network. While there are plenty of open source clients (puty, Winscp etc) for the Windows platform there seems a distinct lack of a server product, such as OpenSSH on Unix. OpenSSH for Windows seems a bit messy as it runs under Cygwin and no updates have been done since 2004. I'm open to purchasing a commerical product. Ideally it should offer Active Directory and/or LDAP integration, encryption, and allow scripting of file transfers. It would be very useful if it was compatible with e…
