Taking Ownership problem
by Guest Bettie Claxton- 0 replies

A user had some files on a Windows 2000 file server that they had set to deny access to everyone. To fix it, I took ownership of the folder and its contents. Although she had assured me she was out of the folder, she in fact had two files open. Those two files are no longer available to anyone. When I go into permissions, it tells me that I do not have access but that I can take ownership. When I go to the ownership tab, however, there is no edit button so I can take ownership. I tried restoring from backup but the permissions did not restore. Is there another way to take ownership of these two files? -- Bettie

Re: Documents and settings is not accessible. Access is denied.

In Vista, Documents and Settings is not a folder and you cannot store anything in it. It is a junction point that serves only to send anything on to the proper folder User folder where such things are stored in Vista. I know it looks like a folder, but it is NOT. It is more like a shortcut, and by way of analogy, you know you cannot store anything in a shortcut. It is there so that older software that insists on encoding that XP location as a destination for it's information, will have it intercepted and directed to a proper Vista folder. Leave it alone! There is nothing in it, and you cannot put anything in it. There are similar folders, My Documents, M…

RE: How to reinstall Defender

You might try this. Go to the main Windows Update window and click on "Installed Updates" (on the left-hand side of the window, at the bottom), and then remove "Update for Microsoft Windows (KB931099)" (only). Reboot. Reboot again. Go back to Windows Update, and re-install the same update, by clicking on the Check for Updates button. Other folks may have additional ideas for you; hope this helps a bit, see if that helps. I hope this post is helpful. Let us know how it works ºut. Recommendations for Anti malware on Home premium
by Guest Gordon- 6 replies

I've just ditched OneCare owing to the total inability of MS support to understand and reply to an infuriating but very straightforward and simple problem I had with it. So I need recommendations for a (hopefully) free Malware app that I can set a schedule up in. (I already have Acronis Home for backup and I'm trying Antivir for AV) Thanks

In Vista, Documents and Settings is just a junction, a virtual directory there only for backwards compatibility with older software. It's not "real" and this is why you can't do anything with it. Hi, On Vista, C:\Documents and Settings is not actually a folder, it's a symbolic link. The folder containing the user data is C:\Users... Where C:\Documents and Settings\John Doe would have existed, it's not C:\Users\John Doe - the Docs and Settings link is provided for backward compatibility for applications... Hope this helps, Jon -- http://www.insidetheregistry.com "ITNews" <ITNews@net.it> wrote in message news:ur6pXTsLJHA.1156@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl...<span style="color:blue"> > As I was trying to browse got the following message: > > Documents and settings is not accessible. Hi, ITNews. Documents and settings is a folder in WinXP and prior. It does not exist in Vista, except as a "Junction Point" for the benefit of legacy programs that have not been updated to work in Vista. In Vista, look in each user's Documents folder. By default, find each one in: C:\Users\<username>\Documents Of course, you will not be able to see the folder for any user except yourself unless you furnish Administrator credentials. And it really is not necessary to cross-post to so many newsgroups. RC -- R. C. In Vista, it's not a folder. Vista uses a different file structure than XP does/did. Those familiar folder names you may be used to, like "My Documents", "Documents & Settings", etc. are not folders in Vista. They are junction points, and are used for legacy programs which were written to utilize the XP file structure. They will redirect the programs to use the equivalent Vista folders. If you keep the protected operating system files hidden, you won't see them. In Vista...... Documents & Settings -> \Users My Documents -> \Users\youraccount\Documents My Music -> \Users\youraccount\Music Application Data -> \Users\youraccount\AppData …

User Account Control - How to runa program as a service as administrator
by Guest TurboPing- 0 replies
Not exactly sure how to phrase my question... We use a remote support tool that is designed to run as a service. Under XP, we can log off of Windows and back on, and the support tool is still active. Under XP, we can re-boot the computer, and when it comes back up, the remote support tool is loaded, running as a service, and we can re-connect. However, with Vista we cannot do this. When we're connected remotely, if we log off, that's it. We can't re-connect until somebody at the host end logs in. We've disabled User Account Control, but this has not helped. I'm no expert at User Account Control, but it seems as if disabling it would help while o…

Scheduler works then quits. Wants password AGAIN--why??
by Guest eganders- 11 replies

I set up the scheduler to run a set of DOS commands. It works for a while then quits saying that it has a "launch failure" and the password is bad. The error value is Error Value: 2147943726 Now, if I re-enter my user name and password (the same one as last time) as the user account (this is an administrative account), it works again for a while. I have it set to run even if I am not logged on and at the "highest" level. Why does it run for about 1/2 to 3/4 of a week and then quit. So damn madening. Seems like the Vista Security has a BUNCH of these really screwed up problems. microsoft.public.windows.vista.security

RADIUS IAS CRL CHECK
by Guest Yossi Sara- 8 replies

We revoked a computer certification, and published a new crl with this cert. in the revocation list. However, when the workstation is turned on, it can establish a connection to the network. It seems that the IAS ignores the CRL (or doesn't check CRL at all). We know that the IAS will ignore new CRL until, that old one has expired, so we waited until the old CRL expired, and then ran the check. Moreover, we added to registery the dword "IgnoreNoRevocationCheck" and set its value to 0. It still doesn't help. If we put the workstation's certification in the 'Untrusted certificates' in the DC, we do get an error of "The certificate is revoked", yet it was o…
