machine based 802.1x-authentication on Windows Vista / XP SP3

Hello, I want to enable machine based 802.1x authentication ou our network, using the certificate distributed by our own Windows-PKI. For Windows XP SP2, we found the solution to do it via the GUI(anyone can point me to the correct GPO-Settings?). For Windows Vista, the only solution seems to be to do it via an XML file as discribed in KB 929847(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929847/ en-us). is there any easier way to configure this and a possibility to configure this via GPO? Thanx in advance Best regards PR

What I'm wondering is this, are there any viruses that eat up your HD space with out causing any other symptoms. I have Live One care and it reports no viruses, but I just cant explain where my HD space went.

Locked out of my documents - Help please
by Guest Yeah- 7 replies

I was running a Windows XP Pro system with the user account password protected and my documents private. The motherboard failed. The cheapest solution was to buy a new computer which naturally came with Vista (Home basic). The drive in the new computer is a WDC Sata drive and so is the drive from the old computer. I plugged the old drive into the new computer as a second disk & and can see everything on it. I copied some data files to the new computer - no problem - then I tried to copy My Documents. I was denied access. I gained ownership of the My Documents folder on the old drive and could then see the contents but I can't gain ownership of the fi…

Program items/desktop shortcuts don't show up
by Guest Gaurav- 2 replies

I have an installation package (.msi) that is sent out thte users. This .msi creates a shortcut on the desktop and places entries under Start - Programs. On Windows Vista, the admin installs this .msi and logs off. Now the non-admin user logs in, but he doesn't see the shortcut and the item under Start - Programs. The non-admin user can browse to Program Files\xxx and create a shortcut of the .exe on the desktop, but this isn't the best way. Are there any special settings in Vista that allow the non-admin user to see the entries under Start - Programs and the shortcut on the desktop?

anti-virus for 2008 Server Core ?
by Guest ohio_navigator- 1 reply

I don't know a lot about the "Server core" installation of Windows 2008. But from what I have read in Symantec anti-virus documents they don't support this type of installation. Is that true? Does Server Core even need anti-virus? PS - Happy to read any documentation myself if you know of a good link please send it.

How does your organizations manage the local administrator account on workstations? 1 2
by Guest Spin- 33 replies

Gurus, How does your organizations manage the local administrator account on workstations? Typically the end-users do run with "administrative" privileges, but a local admin account is needed to access a machine offline. So how is this account typically named (i.e. renamed) and password secured (i.e., complex and only a few people know it)? Then you have the problem of having to change this password on every workstation if a member of the IT staff leaves. Just looking for quick thoughts here, no long treatise on the topic is necessary! -- Spin

Hi, I use Yahoo for my email. I sell things onlin and it is a constant thing that I get email replys from supposedly interested persons wanting my items. But, they turn out to be scams. Most of those have Gmail accounts. How can I tell where the email originates from. like in the headers of the email and what kind of wording will tell me so. Or is it not at all possible to at least know some things? thanks

Kerberos - PAC Sigature Validation by Kerberized Server
by Guest Yanai- 0 replies

Hi, I don't know if it is the right place to ask this question… Anyway, I was reviewing the latest Microsoft PAC structure (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc208628.aspx ) and I noticed that the Security Consideration mentions that “The signature of a PAC prevents elevation of privilege attacks. The signature MUST be verified to avoid these attacks.†I don’t understand how the PAC_SERVER_CHECKSUM signature with the server key can help to prevent a client to generate its own PAC and then use it to gain access to a remote service. Indeed, the PAC is generated by the Active Directory and then encrypted with integrity pro…

I am experimenting with a configuration that redirects the C:\Users and C:\ProgramData folders to a USB memory stick. This allows me to always keep user data in personal care when travelling with the laptop. The redirection is done by setting the value of the ProfilesDirectory and ProgramData attributes in [Auto]Unattend.xml during Vista setup. This method is supported, albeit reluctantly, by Microsoft. To secure and enhance this configuration, I also: - encrypt the hard disk with BitLocker and the TPM key, TPM PIN, and USB startup key - encrypt the memory stick with BitLocker autounlock - lock down C:\ and S:\ (BitLocker) so that users cannot add dat…

File Restrictions / Do not execute files

Hi. Newbie. Have test domain with Windows Server 2003 and XP Professional at the local machines. I would like for XP Professional machines to be able to save text files to a shared folder on the server. However, once they are saved I would not like them to be able to get them back out, delete them, move them, or change them. At the same time I would like for them to be able to see that they are in there. I have been able to do this. There is one thing I don't like. If the XP Professional machine goes to open the saved file on the Server It will execute the file. There won't be any data showing, but it will open the notepad window. Is ther…
