by Guest Sandy Wood- 11 replies

Running Vista Enterprise SP1. We're running ForeFront Client Security as our AV / Spyware app. Each morning after I start my system up. the Windows Defender icon appears in the tray with a note that I need to check for new definitions. Since we're running Forefront, I turn off Windows Defender in Tools > Options. The next day it's enabled again. How can I turn this thing off? -- Sandy Wood Orange County District Attorney

[Crossposted to Security Virus newsgroup, as OP has repost there] There's a very strong possibility that you have a Vundo infection, which is usually accompanied by ZLOB and/or SDBot infections, all of which are protected by a rootkit. Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log to an appropriate forum. I have one that will allow me to export and import the certificate. If I export the certificate how do i sign it with my PKI so my browser will accept the certificate. Yes I could just generate one and improt it but I wuld like to know how to do both. Thanks.

AzMan Store initilization error
by Guest M- 0 replies
Hi, I've developed a test web application that will use an AzMan store to control security. The store is currently on my XP box and the application is developed in VS2008 using C# and .NET 2.0. The application works fine from the IDE but when I publish it to the localhost and try to run that version I get an error: Insufficient access rights to perform the operation. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80072098) this is when I call the line: AzManStore.Initialize(0, ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings[PolicyStoreConnectionString].ConnectionString, null); Reading arround I see that this error could come from having the app and store on different doma…

Administators group confusion
by Guest PMcG- 3 replies

Hello, I'm currently trying to save a powershell global profile on a Vista SP1 machine and getting a failure, I would appreciate anybody's help with understanding this failure Some background I have a domain account that is a member of a domain local group who in turn is a member of the local administrators role on the machine. I would expect this to allow me to act with full administrative privileges on the box. I verified that I can add a local user and this was successful. When attempting to save the global powershell shell profile @ C:\WINDOWS\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\Microsoft.PowerShell_profile.ps1 using notepad I get the following erro…

Server 2003 DC Security Log Event 565
by Guest Mike55- 1 reply

Hey All, I've got Directory Service Access auditing turned on for some auditing software, but the security log fills up with 565 events. I only have Success turned on for auditing. I've tried increasing the maximum log size, but there are just too many 565 events - it fills up a 1GB event log in less than a day. Any ideas what is causing all the 565 events? I do need auditing turned on, but with the log filling up so fast, it's almost pointless to collect useful data. I've pasted a copy of one of the events below. My domain is carroll.edu and the DC for this event is HERA. Thanks! Mike Event Type: Success Audit Event Source: Security Ev…

Critical Update - Windows Component
by Guest AliceZ- 4 replies

I went to the Windows Critical Update page to see if there were any Critical Updates. There was a pop-up asking if I wanted to download "Windows Component." I didn't know what to do; so I clicked no. Then I tried to get into the Critical Update page again and I got the same pop-up. I then clicked on the Install button, and in a second or two I was allowed into the Critical Update screen. Was it okay to allow that to install? I never saw something like this before before. Why did it ask if you wanted to install or if you did not want it to install if you couldn't go any further unless you clicked on the "install." I have WinXP sp3.

Smartcards and Windows Local Accounts Usage

Hi, I'm interested in using our existing smartcard population for non-domain or standalone desktop login and remote desktop client login. Is this doable? Are there docs on this? I know SC functionality is mainly geared to domain environments but there's a large standalone population here.

Vista Network Location Awareness and DUN
by Guest Remy- 2 replies

I have a client who is about to deploy Vista to its business and one of its legacy desktop apps is a client dialler which uses DUN to connect to server services. The application works but NLA kicks in upon connection. The users of the application can only select the PUBLIC profile and what we would like is to bypass this prompt in the first place since it can only lead to confusion. I have had a look at the Firewall Policy and can't see anything there which would allow us to say "whenever this DUN connection is made" or "whenever a remote interface is connected" apply the public profile without prompt. Given that the profile being assigned is the most r…

by Guest Michel777- 2 replies

Dear members, in the document http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa378749.aspx# is described how the NTLM authentication works. We have our own client (written in java) and a server with api for autehtication. The server has all the necessary data for authentication (see below). The question: how to send User name Challenge sent to the client Response received from the client to the domain controller ? Is there any libraries (perhaps in java) or is there a description how to build the request (http ?). Thanks in advance, Michel

Read only NTFS not allowing Read of MS Access
by Guest TKE402- 2 replies

Hi, I have several MS Access DB's that are in a folder that is Read/Execute for Authenticated users. No one can open the DBs. If I change the permissions to Read/Write/Execute than it works because the DB lock file needs to be written to the folder that the DB is located. Is there anyway around this? I do not want the users to have read, write, execute to that folder. All they need is read and execute. Thanks, TKE402

Remote registry request access denied
by Guest DreamU- 8 replies

I have a program that requests performance counter information from a remote Vista machine. In its simplest form it is just a single line of Visual Basic code: PerformanceCounterCategory.Exists("Memory", remotemachinename) If I run as an admin (admin accounts on both machines) everything is fine. But if i run as a standard account (non-Admin on both machines) I get an access denied error on "openHKPD". That is the hidden registry hive HKEY_PERFORMANCE_DATA. Anyone have ideas about why a standard account would fail? It does not fail if I run the request locally on the machine so the standard account has sufficient permission. If I run from Vista to a remot…

How to manage profiles???
by Guest bondo- 3 replies

What I am faced with is a network with a central location with 11 satelite locations. I hope to explain this the best way I can. We run a script when a user logs on that maps their "home" drive. Simple, no problem. Most, 95% use only one machine. But that is at our central location. Outlook becomes an issue when they try to use another computer. I can deal with that. I also thru our script can map the shared drives by department and again simple. Like I said, 95% of our employess do not change departments. This is manageable. Here is my problem. The people working at the other 11 satelite locations need access to the shared drives for that particular locat…

Enable Folder View for FTP Sites on IE6.0
by Guest Avil- 1 reply

I have configured my IE 6.0 on XP-SP2 to Proxy Server for internet access including FTP access. Web access works fine but FTP access doesn't go thru the proxy server instead it reaches gateway and connects. When I deselected the option "Enable Folder View for FTP Sites" under Tools-Options-Advanced, FTP connection goes thru the proxy server but I can only view contents of the FTP server, can't upload the files to FTP server. What's is wrong? Can anyone explain me these features in details. Thanks
