Server 2003: Password. moving capital letter not accepted
by Guest Jason- 1 reply
We have a server 2003 AD environment, with the usual security policies in places (length, complexity, minimum age, etc). When a user tries to change a password by moving the capital, it does not work, but changing one character does. eg: Fred1234 will not change to fRed1234 but will change to Fred1235 Why does the system not take the change? Why is the moving capital (2 changes in the previous password) not taken, while the changing character (1 change) is?

[X-post to microsoft.public.windows.vista.security newsgroup. This has nothing to do with Windows Update.] NAV (even if your subscription is current) will neither detect or remove such hijackware. Add non-critical update to wsus
by Guest Peter- 2 replies

G'day I'm running WSUS v3 and have elected to only download critical and security updates There's a timezone patch that affects us in South Eastern Australia (Q951072) but Microsoft didn't see fit to make it important enough to include in the above classifications Is there some way that I can add this patch to the WSUS server without changing anything else? Thanks Peter

https://www.wachovia.com/ I am used to looking for the lock in IE to show that the page is secure. Wachovia doesn't have one on their home page. Are there other methods to assure me that the page is secure? Couldn't someone copy the page and open a site called wachova or somethig close and catch people that can't spell logging into the wrong page?

Can't delete files........ need help!
by Guest news.microsoft.com- 4 replies

I posted this on several Vista groups in desperation. I can't get control of my own computer although I'm the only user. I can't understand the complicated directions given to OWN my own PC so I can delete unwanted files downloaded to it in error from a backup external drive. I'm the admin and only user on my Vista comp and can't delete old files I no longer want. How do I delete these unwanted files and why don't I have complete control over my own PC? How do I disable all these unwanted "safety" features in control of my PC? How do I get rid of the annoying popup windows asking for permission to do almost everything? It's becoming torture using this …

Tell users how to restore files removed by MRT
by Guest Ian- 4 replies

I ran mrt.exe even though I scan with norton corporate. It started removing or modifying thousands of binaries on the system. Email clients, text editors, countless apps. I've run checksums on several of these binaries against the publishers' hashes and they are all identical. So how the hell do I restore/undo MRT's actions? All I can find in the KB articles about MRT is that everything is in a log and that MRT "may not be able to" undo the actions to some files. If you really can restore or undo what MRT suggests as the KB hints, how the hell do you do it?! And don't say "system restore point". This should definitely be posted on your monthly updated …

Vista Admin Privileges appear to be load
by Guest Richard- 5 replies

I am running Vista Ultimate on a Dell XPS laptop. I appear to have lost admin privileges (my own PC, no other accounts). Any functions with the little shield next to them appear to be disabled. For instance I can change the picture associated with my account by not the name, cannot administer other accounts and cannot turn off UAC. Everything has been OK for a few months but then I have had a series of issues that may/may not be connected. Firstly Apple Sotware updated stopped being able to auto update software. It would alert me but on deciding to proceed with the download the program just returned me to the available update screen. I could download a…

Why do i always need to "Run as an Admin"?
by Guest techenthu- 22 replies

Hi, I have an application which i need to install in the the Program files and launch at the startup. With UAC enabled, I install it as an administrator,it works fine and launches at the start up when i log off and log in again as an admin. But,when i log in as a normal user i have to always "Run as an Administrator" and provide the admin password for launching it , which i dont want to do. When I disable the UAC ,the application does not even start as a normal user it just says "Applicatoin has stopped working" and gives System.UnAuthorisedException. I need the application in the Program files itself and cannot move it to some other user folder. I ne…

something preventing me from accessing nbc.com
by Guest modernenigma@gmail.com- 7 replies

I have found over the past few days, via 'Yahoo answers' that more and more people are unable to access NBC.com. It also appears to be just affecting IE. I have ensured my OneCare anti-virus is up to date, downloaded installed and updated ad-aware, flushed dns, tried different dns servers, cleared all third party addons, tried IE in safe mode (or no addons mode), checked host file, ran system restore.. Going to the IP address for nbc.com (64.210.192.67) comes up with a page that simply says "It works!" Adding nbc.com to trusted sites makes browser cycle through a site via nbc.starcut.us before 'page can't be displayed'. Starcut.us (214.39.58.204) goes to…

recovering deleted files
by Guest rtdavide@yahoo.com- 8 replies

hello, i deleted some files i'd like to have back. i know pretty much what day i did it and i've used several free or trial versions of file restoration software, but none some to give me the option to narrow the searches down to when i deleted the files. so they take a long time and i'm not sure if they are even finding what i want. these are files that i removed even from the recycle bin, but within less than a month ago. some of the files the software has been finding were from months ago or even longer... any software to narrow it down to specific dates, or a range? thanks

security certificate errors
by Guest John Holscher- 1 reply

I am plagued with security certificate error messages and it's getting worse by the day! I am running Windows XP SP2 with IE 7.0. Some of these messages indicate the certificate is out of date when they are not. I even got a security warning when accessing this page to post a new thread. I am also having a problem downloading a payroll update for my QuickBooks pro 2008 software. The download appears to proceed and at the very end I get an internet connection error message which suggests that the date on my system may be incorrect...it is not. QuickBooks support is of the opinion that something is blocking their software from making the necessary connectio…

S/MIME Certificate renewal in W2K3 - EX2K3 infrastructure
by Guest Andreas.Konrad- 0 replies

Hi all, I've implemented secure messaging as described here: http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Email_...hange_2003.html In my GPO I configured Autoenrollment and checked the two boxex "Renew expired certificates..." and "Update certificates..." The renewal period in my template is 6 weeks and the certificate expires after one year. Now I'm wondering why it is necessary to keep the old certificate in my certificate store after getting a new one within the renewal period. If I remove the old one I am not able to decrypt mails being encrypted by using my old public key. I thought the private key remains the same if the certificate is …
