Hi ...just brought home form work a friends' PC that is suffering lots of unwanted ad-windows opening up all by themseles in IE7 ....I've just copied David H. Lipmans multi-av / av-cls (in Safe Mode) to its' boot drive C:\ ....and it's now running the Sophos sweep. ....was this a good start ? ...or should I be taking a different approach, than starting off by running these 4 CLS's i.e. I've never worked on a PC that's had the IE7 compromised in this way - i.e. lots of windows opening all by themselves. any tips appreciated , ..TIA regards, Richard

utorrent and teredo
by Guest Alex- 1 reply

Hi, I have Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 x64 and today i installed uTorrent 1.8 ( stable ). When I open it ( utorrent ) and I look in "Options -> Preferences -> ' General '" the <Install IPv6/Teredo> button is disabled. Why? Is "teredo" enabled by default since I installed the OS? ( I am connected to the Internet by a router through Wireless as connection type. ) The think that pissed me off was that the "Teredo" address apearred in "Resource Monitor"-"Network" only after I installed uTorrent... and since then sometimes it is not active but sometimes is active even if my uTorrent software is closed ( in "Network" tab from Res. Monitor ).…

Is dial-up safer?
by Guest Explodey- 6 replies

My roommate is forever worried that people are trying to hack into her computer and steal her personal information. She's also certain that her computer is becoming infested with worms and viruses. She heard somewhere that dial-up is safer than a high speed connection, so now she exclusively uses her 56k modem, even though we have DSL. Is this really true? I'm sick of her tying up our phone line!

installing vista and error free updates
by Guest Vangellis- 0 replies
For those who experience problems with updates for vista, there is only one sure way of overcoming this without all the hassle. 1- delete the main partition, then create a partition, then reformat the drive, usually C:\ 2 - Install Vista 3- DO NOT install anything at all, no firewall or antivirus, just let windows firewall and windows defender take care of things for now. 4- Update vista, continue to update/restart and update until there are no more updates available. 5- place a shortcut on the desktop for " windows update " (Control Panel/windows update-"right click, send to desktop-create shortcut) 6- install your third part software one at a time, after each…

by Guest Vangellis- 0 replies

For those of you who have USB scanners that Vista has reported to be incompatible, do the following. 1- Make sure you have your scanner installation CD 2- Unplug the USB lead from the scanner to the computer. 3- Restart Vista 4- Plug in the USB cable for the scanner to your computer. 5- Vista will state "new hardware found, searching for drivers" let this finish, you will then be prompted for your driver software disc 6- Insert CD and click on next, Vista will install your scanner and it will work fine in the Vista Camera and scanner wizard. 7- Please note, if your scanner came with software such as "panel" etc, this will not work. However, at least you can…

Blank password allowed for network shares?
by Guest bredelet- 1 reply
I would like to know if Windows XP and Vista clients can connect to a non-Microsoft Samba server with a blank password. The server holds the users in LDAP. This document indicates that the users cannot log in as network users in that case: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library...57059.aspx#ECAA However I do not know if that applies to mapping drives as well.

KB953838 won't install in Vista
by Guest Russ- 10 replies

I've seen the threads about KB953838 not installing under XP. I'm running Vista Home Premium and this update will not install. I recently reinstalled Vista on my new Gateway machine using the Gateway discs and then updated Vista with everything I could (including SP1) before loading any software (including antivirus). KB953838 was the only thing that wouldn't install. It keeps popping up and trying to install, but it won't. It gets to 11% and then bombs with the very descriptive message "Code 80073715 Window Update encountered an unknown error." I've even tried downloading the update from Microsoft as a standalone package but either I got the wron…

Virus problem
by Guest Spectre- 7 replies

I did something stupid. I wasn't paying attention and got the wimad virus. I had the useless bitdefender AV software and it did NOTHTING!! I contacted them and they told me to delete all this crap which I did and it still couldn't find/remove the virus. If anything it only made things worse!! There solution to that was to stop answering my emails. So I went out and bought Kaspersky AV software. The problem now is I can't uninstall bitdefender, windows keeps saying the windows installer won't activate or some such nonsense. I've tried it in safe mode but get the same message. So I tried to force the Kaspersky software in and it won't install due to …

Why won't Vista let apps create new folders?
by Guest JeffG- 11 replies

I have had two similar problems on my system. 1. An application running in one of my user folders has several folders below the folder it runs in. One of these folders is named 'data'. It needed to create a file in data\global. This failed until I created the global folder manually. 2. I have Apache+MySQL+PHP running on my system. PHP was unable to create the folder 'session' in my AppData\Local\Temp\php folder. Again, if I created the session folder manually, PHP was then able to create session files in that folder. What is happening here? Please help.

Installation problem - non-admin users
by Guest Gaurav- 3 replies

Hello, I guess I am facing an administrative privileges issue with Vista. I have a custom application which is sent out to the users as an .msi file. I am not able to install this .msi file on Vista for non – admin users. I get the following error Error 1303. The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory: <Folder Path>. The installation cannot continue. Log on as an administrator or contact your system administrator. Also the setup tries to add some dlls in system32 folder, and another follow on error that I get is: Error 1304: "Error writing to file [file name] verify that you have access to that directory" Whe…

Hello, I just bought this new HP laptop several months and now its infected with malware Trojan. A full scan on Windows defender shows that trojan is detected in some of the .dll files. I deleted 2 files on which it said trojan was detected. But next time I scanned on Windows Defender, some other .dll file showed up. Also scan on Bell Sympatico's Anti virus service, it shows no virus or spywares. My laptop is very slow than before, and also internet explorer browsers keep opening and they take me to some random antivirus sites. Please if you could tell me what to do in getting rid of this Trojan and make my laptop run as normal. I would really apprec…

Vista Icon Virus
by Guest Zareba- 11 replies

Windows XP SP3, Toshiba notebook computer. When I went to PC Pitstop for an analysis of this new-to-me notebook, they said I had Vista Virus and to remove it before doing anything further. My problem is that I can not find this virus. I had downloaded and installed a program that offered to change my icons to those in Vista. When it did not work as I expected, I uninstalled it. Searching the net and searching Microsoft has not turned up anything helpful, although there seems to be a "Vista Anti-virus virus". Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks ....Z

User account and security
by Guest Al- 1 reply

On Vista, in order for a system to see another machine's share, it asks for the user's credentials. I know this can be tuned off using Password protection for shares. However, regardless, if both the systems have the same user account with the same password (not necessarily logged in as that user but just if they have it), then things become very simple and the other user can see and open the shares. So here is the question: I am thinking of automatically creating a user account with a GUID like password on these systems using standard Win32 API's. However, I am afraid that by creating user accounts automatically (albeit with a GUID like password), I ma…
