no password login will work
by Guest henryspl- 4 replies

Here is one I have not seen explained. I can create a new user account and assign a password then when I log out and attempt to log into the new account with the password, it says the password is wrong. I can however use that account name if it is an admin to edit things that require admin privelages from another user account using the password I originally assigned. I know the password of the original admin and it also works when doing things requiring admin privelages but I can't login to that one either. The only login that works is one not requiring a password. My machine is setup to automatically login to a user account w/o password right now. Help? --…

Both Avira (Av) and Windows Defender are shown ON when i open the security centre, but then when i generate a 'performance and reliability report' i get a warning saying that that no antivirus and anti-spyware products were found. To resolve the issue i installed (temporarily) SpyDoctor and AVG8 (uninstalled Avira first) , and both of them were recognized by the system diagnostics report, but i prefer to stick to Windows Defender and Avira. Any suggestions as how to resolve the issue??

I just stumbled across referance to Account unknown
by Guest StarBaseONE2- 1 reply

I was cleaning up this Compaq Presario F700 Wind Vista Home Priemium when I stumbled across a hidden .docx file. Not being familiar with that extension I investigated a bit further... I googled the extension found out that it is a extension designed to make an Office document into an html file (with some format loss). Is that correct? Investigating further I clicked on properties>security tab and ran across something interesting. In the group or user names an unidentified account user appears! NetUserGetLocalGroups
by Guest j95825- 0 replies

I am facing issue with the windows API NetUserGetLocalGroups ( used the LG_INCLUDE_INDIRECT) and NetUserGetGroups to get all the groups the user belongs too. But for some reason I end up getting only the top level information and all the nested information to which the user belongs too. Ex: Group Name: VM1WIN2K31\Administrators Group Name: VM1WIN2K31\None I have tried other option by setting up the security context ( which involves user name and password) on client side and using this information on the server side and from GetTokenInformation I am able to retrieve all the information. Ex: Group Name: VM1WIN2K31\Administrators Group Name: VM1WIN2K31\Non…

Hi, The file on my Win XP Pro SP2 PC called dmserver.dll - located here c:\Windows\system32\dmserver.dll - has a virus according to my anti-virus software and confirmed by virusscan.jotti.org where 5 of the AV checkers showed a positive. All removable media "Windows Vista destination folder access denie
by Guest Bugkiller- 4 replies

I suddenly cannot write files to any removable media device (USB flash, 3.5" floppy disk or CD-R-DVD-R). Onset of this was: Copied file from desktop to USB flash drive fine. Did nothing else with that drive and made no system changes in following week. Then tried to copy additional file to the drive a week later and could not. I get the 'need permission' and UAC messages, respond appropriately but that does not work and I get the "Try Again" msg. Tried other flash drives, new and used, floppy disks and DVD writer all with no joy. Help please.

Security Question
by Guest Paul Montgumdrop- 2 replies

Anyone out there know about this? <copied from a poster> Even if it never happens, if there is two users logged in at the same time, one is admin and has open a window, the other user can take advantage of the open window that the admin uses and do everything an admin would be able to do, as microsoft don't check from whom a command comes, it just assumes that the user who uses the window is the one who is logged into that session where it's displayed. There is a fix for this, but requires a rewrite of explorer and make all GUI using application to not work.

Firewall and DHCP question
by Guest Neil- 0 replies

Hi, We had Symantec Firewall earlier and there were couple of rules that were defined (I am not sure whether it was defined in the GPO or using local machine policy). The rules were that if the machine was getting DHCP address then they were blocked at the firewall for access violation of certain sites. So, the users had to log in to Symantec and was then allowed to go out. We have now removed Symantec firewall and we have added another product called Fortigate. So, when the user tries to access some sites which are restricted by the firewall. But, if the same user is provided a static address IP range which is actually allowed to go through the f…
