Hi, We are using Windows Server 2003 OS and Visual Studio 2005. When user trying drag and drop .dll files in c:\windows\assembly folder we gets "Assembly cache viewer- install failed" Access is Denied: 'FileName.dll'. I knew this definately a some permissions issue. i.e user need to have permission to update the GAC...not having admin permissions!!! How I can give more permissions to user? I wrote a BATCH File: icacls C:\Windows\assembly /C /Grant "Users":(F) icacls C:\Windows\assembly /C /Grant "Users":(CI) icacls C:\Windows\assembly /C /Grant "Users":(OI) icacls C:\Windows\assembly /C /Grant "Users":(IO) icacls C:\Windows\assembly /C /Grant …

Kerberos newbie
by Guest Frank Perry- 0 replies

I'm new to using Kerberos. But I have an existing client application that requires authentication by a server using Kerberos. It appears that I am getting a ticket correctly (at least what is returned looks good if I dump the memory). But I need to see if it works with the server end. Unhappily, the server is done and it will be some time before that group gets something running. What I need is to simulate the server (an HTTP server) to try and validate the ticket. Is it possible to set up a "server" with Kerberos and validate the ticket on the same PC the client is running on? What do I need to do that? Are there any good books or resources…

Vista Help & Support - Permissions Problem?
by Guest Mike- 16 replies
I posted this in General, but got no response. I have a little bit of updated findings to post here. If I run Help and Support as Administrator or if I create a new user and run from it, Vista Help & Support runs perfectly. However, when I run it from my primary user/administrator sign-on, I just get text text (looks like text from an .h1s file). I have googled for days and the closest I can find to a solution refers to Server 2003 and XP. I can't find anyone with this problem. I can't find a "Help and Support" services entry like there was on XP. The only program I can find is HELPPANE.exe and I have changed and rechanged permissions until my…

NTFS permission change when migrating to new Domain
by Guest gordon- 0 replies
We have a Netapps san that we use as a file share. We are migrating to another supposed trusted domain in our AD structure They will shut down our existing domain. Are there any tools that anyone is aware of that will map existing NTFS permissions either by user or groups and convert or add permissions for the new domain. I am sure there has to be some to help do this rather than me trying to go to our fileshare server and manually click on all folders and reset the permissions. This would take days. Thanks in advance, for any help!

I have a workstation on our LAN running Windows XP SP3. There is no such file on the CD, which installs successfully on an identical workstation. 3) When (in Explorer) I try to copy autoruns.exe from a floppy to the C:\ drive, I get a popup telling me the copy fails because of a checksum error. Connection issues between windows server and samba!
by Guest Scott Shinnie- 3 replies

We have a Windows Server 2003 cluster which accesses data held on a samba share hosted on a Solaris 9.0 machine in a trusted domain. However we regularly lose connectivity to the samba share from one of the application servers. The share is up but the server is unable to access it. If I RDP on to the server and try and browse the share I receive the following error. \\serveralias\share is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. No network provider accepted the given network path. If I use a FQDN (unix machine is in a differe…

Is this template hard coded in Certificate Services? When I duplicate and customize this template and make it available the CA (W2k3 ent root CA) doesn't pick it up. Permissions on the template are read and enroll for the CA's machine account. Regards, Han Valk.

I just stumbled across referance to Account unknown
by Guest StarBaseONE2- 3 replies

I was cleaning up this Compaq Presario F700 Win Vista Home Premium when I stumbled across a hidden .docx file. Not being familiar with that extension I investigated a bit further... I googled the extension found out that it is a extension designed to make an Office document into an html file (with some format loss). Is that correct? Investigating further I clicked on properties>security tab and ran across something interesting. In the group or user names an unidentified account user appears! It is 'Account Unknown(S-15-21-2817377724-365178722-714591354-1001) Does anyone know any legitimate Win Vista OS account like this? Thanks ahead of time for your re…

Installing Access 97 on Vista
by Guest Chris Barnes- 14 replies

A google search of this topic showed some discussions of this exact problem, but nothing about how to actually solve the problem. I have a user who needs to run Access97 on their brand new Vista computer (Enterprise - but I don't think that matters). At the end of the installation (setup.exe run as Administrator), I get an error that says "an error occurred at changing the workgroup database SETUP couldn't create a system.mdw file. Reboot your computer and run Workgroup Administrator before you run the application" So I did that (as Administrator). Nada. Copied a System.mdw file from another machine and put it in a directory called "C:\Apps\Offic…

Hi: I found the Constructor.Win32.Downldr.ek virus in a MS file I had lying around in My Documents. Zone Alarm Security Suite 7.0.483.000 picked it up on a scheduled scan. The file is named: WindowsXP-KB838079-SupportTools-ENU.exe and can be downloaded from: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&DisplayLang=en After it was quarantined, I tried downloading it again as a fresh copy from the MS download link above. It too showed the: Constructor.Win32.Downldr.ek virus. I submitted the newly downloaded file to www.virustotal.com It showed that both Kaspersky and F-Secure detect that same virus. F-Prot shows it to be a damaged file. T…

UAC security hole?
by Guest Steve Thackery- 3 replies
The following article: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/itdojo/?cat=3 ....shows a way of running UAC-restricted programs without a UAC prompt. Basically, you create the restricted program as a task in Task Scheduler, set it to "Run with highest privileges", and then create a shortcut to the task. From then on you can run the program without the UAC prompt. Regardless of what you think about UAC, doesn't this sound like a fairly serious security breach? Bearing in mind that Microsoft have made a software tool available for UAC-enabling old applications on a case-by-case basis, it sounds like they didn't realise you could do it much more simply u…

Windows Security and Newsgroups 1 2
by Guest Coogee- 37 replies

New laptop with Vista. I'm the admin, only account. Trying to set up newsgroups from my news server, which requires me to log on. All is set up OK in the account screens. When I try to initially download the newsgroups on the server, up pops a Windows security notice, asking me to log on to the newsgroups server- "verify that both username and password are correct for your mail server". After I enter user name and password, and click OK, the screen keeps popping up asking for same prompt. I am giving it the correct info, but will not accept, so can't begin to download newsgroups. Whatever I enter will change what's in the account screen for the server …

Virus- launches Internet Explorer
by Guest SBOFCL- 3 replies

I have some kind of virus that automatically launches Internet Explorer windows. The large letters "WWW" flash at the bottom right of my screen and and IE window opens one after the other. Sometimes it is just a few. But I've had 50 or more pop up before I have to shut the machine down. Once it starts, I haven't found a way to stop it. It doesn't seem to damage my machine or data, but bogs it down so I can't do anything. I've run numerous virus scans, spyware/malware scans, and even ran my system restore disc. No viruses or malicious files were found. And the system restore did not get rid of it. I haven't been able to figure out a pattern on …
