September 24, 2008 (Computerworld) Mozilla Corp. late Tuesday patched 11 vulnerabilities in Firefox 3.0, more than half of them labeled "critical," and fixed 14 flaws in the older Firefox 2.0. Firefox 3.0.2 quashes six critical bugs, four marked "high" and one pegged as "low" in Mozilla's four-step threat ranking system. Among the most serious were four stability bugs in the browser's graphics rendering, layout and JavaScript engines that can crash the program and might be exploitable with malicious code. "Some of these crashes showed evidence of memory corruption under certain circumstances and we presume that with enough effort at least some of these cou…

Hi Brad; you were back here months ago re the above. Can you repost that .org for others here, as you have put a full-stop after the org They can't click it, and that can't copy/paste it. And retyping bores a lot of people, lol. Good to see you here again. -- Mad Mike "Bradley Dinerman [MVP - Enterprise Secur" wrote: <span style=color:blue"> > > This is a general notice and/or reminder for those of you on the LinkedIn > network that the National Information Security Group (NAISG) maintains a > group on the LinkedIn network and welcomes your membership. > > Membership in the group is moderated, however. I don't know if the computer I am trying to fix just had AntiVirusXP2008 or something more. I have found the manual removal instructions for AVXP and that seemed to work except the computer cannot access a whole host of sites. Mcafee.com Symantec.com windowsupdate.microsoft.com PandaSecurity.com And so on. I can ping the sites fine and tracert fine but when I try to go to them in IE7 a couple of strange things happen. First, when I try Mcafee.com it brings me to a google search result page as if I did a google search for mcafee.com. Then if I click on Mcafee.com link in those results IE7 wiill give me the error page as if I were not connected to t…

HP loads PC with nonexistent web browser
by Guest ~BD~- 3 replies

"Yesterday, the hardware maker unleashed the HP Compaq dc7900, a business desktop with a version of Firefox that isn't really there. Developed in tandem with Mozilla and Symantec, the Firefox for HP Virtual Solutions browser operates in a runtime netherworld that's separate from the rest of the machine. This means that when malware attacks, the machine itself is unharmed. "[This virtual Firefox browser] ensures that employees can utilize the World Wide Web productively, while keeping business PCs stable and easier to support," writes Symantec technical product manager Scott Jones. "Changes made to a PC while surfing the Web are contained in a 'virtual layer…

vista - windows defender won't update
by Guest fme008 via WindowsKB.com- 1 reply

Hi, I have Vista home premium, My Windows Defender won't update, on the notification it shows the castle wall with "!" mark. when I go into Windows Defender, it says "! Check for new definitions." When I click "Check for updates now," the button just blank out for 10-20 seconds, then it blanks on. No update or anything, is there a fix to this problem? NOTE: I have tried "Windows Update error 0x80240029 occurs when you try to update Windows Defender" -> "Method 2: Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder. " But it didn't work. -- Message posted via http://www.windowskb.com

Draging the displayed URL to the LINKS bar
by Guest eganders- 0 replies

In Vista, using Internet Explorer7: Dragging and dropping the icon in the present URL to the links bar is allowed--no proble. Dragging and dropping the icon to a FOLDER on my links bar creates an access denied!##%%!! I am sick of this type of security. The stupid thing is I can drag and drop it to the links bar, cut it and PASTE it into the folder. Thanks, Microsoft, for the added extra steps in the name of security. This type of nonsense makes a joke of security. Is there a way around this? microsoft.public.windows.vista.security

One Firewall or more....?
by Guest offwego- 6 replies

I've just installed Zone Alarm Security Suite which includes a firewall and got warnings about running two firewalls. I guess I should turn off the firewall that comes with XP Pro? Do I just turn it off (in the 'security centre' I assume?) or do I need to uninstall something? I use a Speedtouch 546 router in my system. I think this provides some sort of firewall as well? Any advice to ease my confusion would be great!

Windows security Alerts

I have Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 installed. A couple of days ago, the Windows security Alerts is on and Windows Security Center showed Windows Defender is out of date. but after manual update, I received a message: "There are no new definitions available to download for Windows." In Windows Defender, it states Real-time protection is on and Definition version is 1.43.73.0 created on 9/4/2008. I have tried someone's solution that posted in here by running verify repository, but after I run winmgmt / verifyrepository, system responded "WMI repository is consistent". So should I still run winmgmt /salvagerepository at this point? Is there other way can…

UNC connections & Vista...

I don't have a Vista machine in front of me, but is there a new issue with connecting using unc paths like \\computername\c$ now in Visa? Even when trying to do it from Vista to an XP machine seems troubling. They are both non-domain members. May be different in a domain environment.

Change validatiy period of a Root certificate
by Guest Gunna- 10 replies

Appologies if this is covered elsewhere, I did google it first. I have a Standalone Root CA whos certificate is only valid for 5 years. Is there a way I can renew the Root certificate extending the validity period. I know setting the validity period etc on the CA seems to only affect certificates issued from the CA but not the CA's root certificate. Is this possible or am i looking at a rebuild? BTW I inherited this PKI so I had nothing to do with the planning, i know good planning is important.
