administrative access & initial screen
by Guest Candace- 4 replies

I just bought a new computer that is running Vista Ultimate. I am the only person using this machine and no one else had access to it. I need to know three (3) things: (1) How do I log in as "admin" on the machine? The initial screen that comes up only shows my name as a user, it does not show a button for "admin" or "administrator"? (2) How can I verify that my user name (the only user that I set up) has administrative privileges to the machine? (3) How can I set up Vista so that when I turn on the PC it goes directly to my desktop and does not require me to log in?

by Guest RandySh.- 6 replies

Hi, Every time I start my Vista Home Premium, I get the message (with a lock as icon) that "the computer failed to connect to a Windows remote service" and that "This leads to unlimited users not being able to connect to this computer." Then I get a suggestion to check the event log to read about details. Moreover, when i try to check my firewall settings, there is no way windows displayes them, but at the same time the firewall is running according to the "check this computers security settings". I also fail on changing the settings for my private home network to become visible. Please, help me figure this out. I am concidering turning the windows firewa…

Domain users being added to Administrators
by Guest thajuggla4478- 2 replies

Hello all, I have ran into a problem where our doamin users group is being added to our administrators group nightly. I have tried several different things, but to no avail. I am beginning to suspect that we have a hacker running loose on our network here. Is there a way that I can lock this out short of using the GPO? Thank you, Brett

Windows Defender will nags, but no updates?
by Guest James Colbert- 2 replies

System: Vista Ultimate, X2 4400+, 3GB DDR RAM, MSI 7125 mainboard, nForce4 chipset. Recently, Windows Defender has been notifying me that its definitions are out of date. The problem is that when I attempt to update, it states that there are no updates available, but the task bar tray nag remains. I also noticed that the last restart, after post, there was a Registry path displayed across the screen. I grabbed a camera to capture it, but was too late. I've not seem this before, but Vista updated itself just before starting windows, so I assume this could be part of that process and may not be related. Any ideas on why Windows Defender thinks its defi…

Security vulnerability scanner
by Guest Nedd- 1 reply

We have one-place branch office and we'd like to create security analysis of our services, checking procedures and make new procedures and rules. As first step we'll run Microsoft Best Practices Analyzers (for Exchange, GPO, SharePoint, SystemStateAnalyzer, ...) and follow Microsoft Instrastructure Optimization to identify our currently position in IT software and hardware world. Can you please advice any other SW / procedure to follow formal procedure and any security vulnerability scanner to check our network? Thnx.

Help!!

Despite having both a firewall and an up-to-date anti-virus program running on my PC, I seem to have accumulated a Trojan Virus from somewhere. I have run a virus scan through the antivirus software, and it has told me that I have a trojan, and that it has removed it. However I keep getting a Windows-type security pop-up saying that my firewall has detected a problem. The pop-up seems suspicious and some of the wording doesn't seem consistent with other windows msgs i've had before. My only option with this pop-up is to download some software to remove it. This leads me to this website: http://www.antispyware-review.biz/?wmid=46...d=uWfLn0pimL&a= …

Best Malware Remover (Antispy/Antivirus)
by Guest Stevepppp@gmail.com- 17 replies

Next to a clean windows refresh, there's only one method of removing anti-spy / antivirus Only one malware remover software worked for me and that was Spyware Doctor by PC Tools. Malware Remover Software (that I've tried) Spyware Doctor (PC Tools) Clean Refresh (reformat & start over) Trend Micro AVG Mcafee Panda AV Avira Avast NOD32 Norton Kapersky Details Spyware Doctor Does the trick. Cheap, yet good. Bear in mind, that statement is valid right now. Who knows what the future holds. Clean Refresh You can bet that malware idiots will even outfox PC Tools someday soon. So the old clean refresh will become the number one again as it …

Business office space renter with wireless
by Guest Vic- 9 replies

I noticed in Microsoft Windows Network a Mshome domain that shouldn't be there. Upon investigation I found that another business that rents office space in our bank installed a wireless router and plugged it into our router. I was able to track down the other business laptops and found that they were indeed getting ip's and dhcp from our (2003) network. Other than the fact that their laptop security is out of our control, what other risks does having a wireless network in our routers pose? Thanks! Vic

By mistake, I told Vista's UAC to block Adobe Flashplayer 10. Now, UAC won't let me reinstall it. I keep getting a message from UAC, "This program has been blocked. Your administrator set policy to block this program - flashplayer10_install_ activeX...., Untrusted Publisher" Anyone know how I can get Vista to allow the installation of this program? Any help will be appreciated.

Security for 64 bit Vista Laptop
by Guest James Colbert- 22 replies

I just picked up a laptop and am finishing the setup phase. I'll be installing Avast Anti-Virus, as I know it supports 64 bit and works reasonably well. Windows Defender is enabled, as is Windows firewall. Now I'd like to address strong security. This laptop will be used for business (and play as well, I suppose, especially during hurricane evacs). One concern I have are for those times when I must download banking transactions into Quicken and Quickbooks. I'd like to be sure that my passwords and the sensitive data I'll be downloading is not accessible to anyone else. These downloads might take place via a hotel network or via a Sprint (or similar) br…

Authenticated Users, Everyone ,anonymous ????
by Guest Gunna- 5 replies

Hi in the confusion of Google I cant seem to find a straight answer about permissions. I know Authenticated users includes any user who has authenitcated against a DC right? So if I wanted to add all my users to access a share whats the diff between using Authenticated Users and Everyone? Also, if I created a share and gave a certain Group, call it "Accounts" full access to this folder. The Everyone or Authenticated or anyone group wont give access to this folder through some kind of wacky way microsoft do things or anything like that will it? The only way Authenticated Users will get access is by either inhertigin it from folders above or my me addin…

OT: KAVDOS32.exe /switch syntax ? 1 2
by Guest RJK- 27 replies

Can anyone explain Kaspersky's CLS scanner switch syntax ! ...please :-) (...Sophos CLS switches are so straightforward in comparison !) KAV is so ambiguous I'm half afraid to use it ! ....specifically what are the KAV CLS defaults ? ...are all switches on unless used with a "-" (minus) to invert them, ....and does that inversion switch something on or off, because at the end of the help screen it says, "for all options '-' inverts the default meaning." .....well that's fine if one could deduce what the default settings are ! e.g. The help screen ( kavdos32 /? ) shows switches in this format e.g. :- /B[-] skip dos boot sector test ....is it the…

Norton Internet Security upgrade
by Guest Bill Ridgeway- 4 replies

I have Norton Internet Security 2007 which invited me to take a free upgrade to NIS2008. I thought keeping NIS up-to-date would be a good thing to do so took the upgrade. After a lot of preparatory work and downloading it started to install but failed (I tried twice). That left me without NIS so I then had to use the Norton uninstall tool, install NIS2007, and download and install the various updates. All this took several hours. I would suggest you think twice before accepting this upgrade. Regards. Bill Ridgeway

Hello "unknown" Please make sure the full path to httpd.exe DOES NOT contain space characters. This will not run in Program Files directory. The best solution is to install in in root: C:\Apache\... Then Right click on cmd.exe and choose to run it as administrator. Better idea is to use autoinstaller available on apache.org
