Run a port scan from outside your network and make sure no ports are open that shouldn't be (FYI port 80 can be used as a proxy) Ask for headers of the offending emails and look at the dates the emails went out. Revealed: The Internet's Biggest Security Hole
by Guest ~BD~- 11 replies
Two security researchers have demonstrated a new technique to stealthily intercept internet traffic on a scale previously presumed to be unavailable to anyone outside of intelligence agencies like the National Security Agency. The tactic exploits the internet routing protocol BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) to let an attacker surreptitiously monitor unencrypted internet traffic anywhere in the world, and even modify it before it reaches its destination. The demonstration is only the latest attack to highlight fundamental security weaknesses in some of the internet's core protocols. Those protocols were largely developed in the 1970s with the assumption…

Quote from: Phishing Activity Trends Report, Q1 2008 http://www.antiphishing.org/reports/apwg_report_Q1_2008.pdf Definition: Crimeware code which is designed with the intent of redirecting end-users’ network traffic to a location where it was not intended to go to. This includes crimeware that changes hosts files and other DNS-specific information, crimeware browser-helper objects that redirect users to fraudulent sites, and crimeware that may install a network level driver or filter to redirect users to fraudulent locations. All of these must be installed with the intention of compromising information which could lead to identify theft or other credentials …

.fsLockFile
by Guest Mitigation Elf- 4 replies

I am trying to move files around on my Vista Home Premium 32 bit system. I have been unable to rename, move or delete a specific folder. I have been able to move all of the contents of the folder to a new folder except a file that is called .fsLockFile. I am not sure how it got there or where it came from but at this point, my conclusion is that file is the reason I have been unable to do anything with the folder. I am the administrator and have full permissions to do anything I want with the folder. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? TY -/ME

Nym shifting Paul Montgomery aka Paul Montgumdrop at his best.

The List Keeper wrote aka Paul Montgomery: LOL, the List Keeper is Paul Montgumdrop aka Paul Montgomery. He has got to come with the List Keeper, because I took his name sort of speaking. :-P This all started when he said he was going to killfile me. He was just meddling none of his business and running his mouth, as usual. And I proved to him that his little killfile didn't mean jack. Then he came at me again, of course I was using another nym. He tells me that he was sorry he had to killfile, thinking that he was talking to someone he had not encountered. So, I went to another nym and gave him hints. He is a dog just like the rest, don't let hi…

Office 2003 and Vista
by Guest moses388- 2 replies

Is there a reason Windows Vista is not listed as a supported operating system on the KB953404 download page? The download details page only lists Windows 2000, NT, Server 2003 SP1, and XP SP2. I am running Office 2003 SP3 on Vista SP1 and it threw me when Vista was not listed. However, I reasoned this is an update for Office so what difference does the OS list make? I downloaded the update and it installed successfully. I install my updates manually and here's why: I migrated from Windows 2000 to Vista SP1 using a clean install. I have troubles with Windows Update hosing my system when it automatically installs updates. Windows Update completes success…

Vulnerability thru old versions of Java?
by Guest Gotde T Shirt- 10 replies

A well-known 'feature' of the Sun Java update process is that it leaves older versions still installed. Could an old version with a vulnerability be exploited by the baddies, even when the fixed version has been installed?

distinguish real from fake dialog?
by Guest james- 2 replies

While surfing the web, if a dialog pops up purporting to be a system/firewall/antivirus message requesting that you click on one of the buttons, is there an easy way to tell a real dialog from a fake one (a link to a trojan)? Is there some utility that tags each pop up window so that at a glance you can tell real from fake? Obviously, the tag should not be "fakable".

BitLocker confusion
by Guest ormico- 0 replies

I apoligize if this question has been asked, but I didn't see it when I searched the forum and elsewhere on the web. I have a laptop that I have been considering Whole Drive Encryption on for a while. The options that I am aware of are PGP Whole Drive Encryption, TrueCrypt, and BitLocker. I have Vista Ultimate and BitLocker is one of the big reasons I got Ultimate, but BitLocker doesn't seem to be as straight forward as some of the other options which is irratating. My laptop does not have a TPM chip. From what I have read, this means that to use BitLocker I must use a USB drive to store the key. Before I go any further down this road, I have …

Password Policy Change Question
by Guest spirit_dm- 1 reply

I would like to change the Minimum Password Length requirement from 6 character alpha-numeric to 5 character alphanumeric. I would also like to set the Maximum Password Age to 0, so they never expire. Will changing these settings have any visible effect on the users that are already set and using their network accounts? Also, to add multiple accounts I should be able to use dsadd user / in a similar way that the old addusers worked in NT. The only fields I care about are first name, last name, userID and password. dsadd user has many, many flags. Can I just ignore them, or do I need to pad the csv file with commas, like in addusers? Thanks in adva…

Vista and local DNS ?
by Guest rvj- 0 replies

Im using a laptop with Vista (Business) and IIS 7 for development associating multiple hosts with the same (local 127.0.0.01) IP address Currently I edit the hosts file manually to perform the equivalent of a wildcard DNS entry As far as I know the local HOSTS file does not support the inclusion of a single record DNS wildcard A record So I have to specify every host individually (and there are a lot). It quite time consuming double checking these against my IIS host headers Is there an alternative approach that can be installed on the same machine which will allow me to simple define a single wildcard A record which points to 127.0.0.1 …

Restricting Printers on the Domain
by Guest spirit_dm- 0 replies

I have a new color printer on the domain at our high school. This is on a Windows 2003 domain. Is there a way to restrict printer access by IP address, instead of users? In the old NT4 domain, we could restrict users to logging in from 1 - 8 specific machines by IP, or the entire domain. Is there something similar in AD for this? There are 800 kids in this high school, and maybe 200 of them will possibly use one of the 5 machines that should have access to this printer. But if they are in another classroom, for example, they should not be allowed to use that printer. Can this be accomplished? Thanks in advance!

I would contact the "various anti-spam black list" managers and ask them why you are being blocked. This sounds like something from outside of your network. executable code versus non-executable code

Gurus, Today, I overheard four guys in a meeting bandying about executable code versus non-executable code. I couldn't quite follow but what I thought I heard was executable code was things like exe's and non-executable code was like dll's (they can't be executed directly, they must be called by something else. Is my understanding close to correct? -- Spin

My mail server is blocked again and again by various anti-spam black lists and It's driving me mad. - I ensured that relaying on my server is allowed only for domain users. - I blocked smtp outgoing connections on my firewall except those established by my proper mail server (IP). The third thing i had read about is a SMTP-PROXY. What do I need to configure on my server (Win 2003 SBS with Exchange) to ensure that SMTP-PROXY is closed on my server? -- ------------------------------------------ Jacek Jurkowski
