Restrict take ownership rights
by Guest Gunna- 4 replies

I know this is a dumb question but i have to ask. Is there anyway I can restrict members of a XP desktops local administrator group from taking ownership of a folder. I have given a group access to a folder on a XP machine and then taken the local administrators group access to the same folder away. I want to ensure that local administrators cannot come along and elevate their own privilleges by taking ownership. The folder holds very sensitive data that adminis are not allowed to access however they need local admin rights for some other reasons e.g. applying patches and general admin. Is there another group on these desktops that can be used for a…

I just got a new machine with windows vista pre loaded. every thing worked fine but when I tried to install an internet browser other than internet explorer (mozilla firefox, google chrome, safari), it allows me to down load, install, but when the new browser is about to launch, the machine sends a message (for mozilla), that says "the security component for the application could not be initialized, most probable cause is, problems with the application profile directory files,(for google chrome) installation error No 2, (for safari) it just frozen. Can't D/L images to desired folders
by Guest notageek- 5 replies
I'm the only user, and I've changed the permissions on the desired folders for my user account (not hidden administrator account) to allow Full control (including Write). I checked the main folder and all sub-folders where I want to download, and all have the permissions. Yet when I try to D/L an image, I still get the "You don't have permission to save to this folder. Do you want to save to the Pictures folder?" When I choose Yes, I get the even stupider "For security reasons the file was saved to the Temporary Internet folder." [my recollection of these messages] Now what do I do? I'm using Ancestry.com to D/L census images that I want to look at offlin…

Certificate for Smart Card User
by Guest Jacek Jurkowski- 1 reply

I installed Microsoft CA on Windows Server 2008, configured it properly to issue a Certificates for SmartCard Users. Everything works fine. Im requesting certificate from my computer using SmartCardUser certificate and its issued to me by CA and installed in local store. But how in the name of Lord can i download that certificate into a smart card? Its private key isn't exportable so i cannot import it into my Alladin Token. The only way i figured out is to create a new CA template based on SmartCardUser, mark its private key as exportable. Certificate issued that way works fine and my Alladin can import it but i think it should be less complicated. Why Window…

Install the vista!. Add a none admin user for you self and for all other. Put a password on the admin account. Log out and in on your new user account (none admin) When you need admin rights there will come a box where you have to type the admin password. This box will probably normal be see if you add and remove programs, and some other thinks like control of user accounts. It is normal if you have install a program you have the rights to run it. The message that you need admin rights will be reduced a lot. Only thing you have to remember: 1. This box will give access to the admin account. 2. The box will not come by self. if it do scan you computer.…

Unknown file shareing automatic lowering of firewall.
by Guest Preston Hamlin- 1 reply
I was looking through my internet security history with Norton, and I noticed an automatic lowering of my firewall, to enable file shareing. It was a low level risk. The records say it happened yesterday at 155 PM, connecting to a trusted network, GATEMAC 00 14 6C 94 D5 14 I have not uploaded ANY IP adresses to trust for file shareing. Nor have I in the past shared files over the web. I thought it might be for updates, or system statistics, but am unsure. Is there a way to find more information? Such as what files might have been shared? I am not extremely good with tracing programs.

How to detect the signature of a file
by Guest Manjunath.M- 0 replies
Hi, I got source code (using winverifytrust API ) which detects whether the given file is signed or not. source code link : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa382384.aspx I created an exe with that code and tested I faced one issue when I pass the "C:\Windows\System32\ieframe.dll" it is showing that this file is not signed. If I check the same file using "sigverif" ieframe.dll is signed. Please can any tell me what might be the reason for the above. I am trying to implement the SIgnedCode class in VC++ (MFC or Win32) I did not get any information on this in the web. Please can any suggest me how to proceed. Thanks, Manjunath.M

I'm interested in client security from the VPN. For example if a VPN is established on a client (say either via a DLL or Microsoft VPN), how does the client configure their machine to keep the server side from using the VPN to browse or copy files from the client machine? Thanks David
