RE: Pswd Protect a simple file? Possible?

Hi Steve, I don't think there is a way with Vista itself. I use Axcrypt. It works quite well. http://www.axantum.com/AxCrypt/ -- Paul "Steve Turner" wrote: > How do you password protect a simple notepad file under Windows Vista Home > Premium? Is it possible? >

trojans
by Guest Abby- 10 replies

I just picked up a Trojan somewhere. Window's Defender removed it. Now I'm wondering what I did wrong. A week or so ago, I got a pop-up claiming that I had no virus protection and saying that "they" were going to do a scan. I DO have virus protection (McAfee), so I knew this wasn't legit. I had a hard time shutting it down, but I did. I did three scans in Safe mode (McAfee, Defender and Super AntiSpyware Free) and found nothing. I am wondering if this Trojan came from that and just wasn't detected until now. If not, could it have come from an Email attachment? My friends are always sending me forwarded things which I enjoy. I do have email scanni…

shift and ctrl keys not working
by Guest deacon- 3 replies

recently had a swarm of trojans and virii on my computer due to a friend 'playing' around. i've since removed all of that software but have lost my shift key and control key functions. i have used a keymapper and found out that when i press the shift key on either side the computer recognizes it being pressed as well as the control key simultaneously. i've lost the ability to capitalize anything without hitting the caps lock and i can not add type anything requiring the shift key to be used such as an exclaimation mark or a question mark. i think it may be a registry issue but i have reverted back a couple saves on my box and it has not changed the issue. …

Worried

So, about two weeks ago a user open a "gift card" email and installed a trojan. It was detected and cleaned. However, and maybe it is unrelated, but every morning when staff arrive to work every computer is frozen. Either the screen saver is on but moving a mouse or touching a button only displays the background image or all you see is a copy of their desktop with files and folders. However there is no start bar, clicking ctrl-alt-delete does nothing. We have waited hours for some machines to shows signs of life to no avail. The only way to get them to come back is a hard boot, and even then it can take 3 or 4 of them before it comes back to life. …

Service accounts with password expiration
by Guest Carlos Felipe França da Fonseca- 8 replies

The corporate auditing requires that all accounts' passwords expire, including service accounts. Questions: 1. Is it really a security recommendation? 2. Is there an easy way to automate this process (as a scheduled task, for example)? 2. If a modify the password in the service settings, will this one keep running with no disruption? 3. If I modify passwords for clustering service accounts, will those ones keep running with no disruption? Thanks, Felipe

proposed changes to UAC mechanism, RunAs, and documentation

Hello - Someone please forward the comments below to people working on Vista Service Pack 2: The "Run as Administrator" option that appears when you right-click on a shortcut or program should be changed in Vista to say "Run Elevated as Current User". The Run As Administrator doesn't prompt for credentials in instances where a Local Admin is already logged in, breaking the functionality of "Run As" as it was previously created and used in XP/2000. If anything, Vista should have "Run Elevated as Current User", "Run Elevated as Different User", and "Run Standard as Different User" options instead of the current Run as Administrator. What if you are a …

Aladdin...

I wanted to secure my account with a strong authentication, so i bought an Aladdin eToken pro and created a private key at it using MS Certification Authority built in 2008 Server. The problem is that vista doesn't see the key during logon process saying that "there is no valid key" on the smaty card. I was trying to secure my drive using that key so i tried to assign that key in "User accounts/Manage your file encryption certificates". Vista recognizes my certificate but in a final step, where probably Vista is trying to read a key contetnt, EFS REKEY wizard is freezing and i must to replug the token to make it visible and accessible again... What do I do…

Windows Defender detection of Vundo trojan
by Guest ColBla- 7 replies

Apologies if this is the wrong board for this - if so, happy to re-post in a more appropriate place, just tell me where ! Windows Defender keeps reporting an infection with Vundo.gen!E. The advice on the MS site says remove it using an AV program. I use McAfee, but when I run a scan it can't find it - checking the update status of McAfee, I have the right updates that should detect this version of Vundo. So I can't actually follow the "how to remove" advice. So is Defender giving a false positive, or should I be really worried because I seem to have an infection that McAfee can't find ? Any advice on how to proceed gratefully received. Not sure whether…

Offline files with encryption
by Guest cazulp- 0 replies

Vista documentation states that when using offline files with encryption, the User files are encrypted with an EFS certificate. I know exactly how this worked in XP because I was able to look at the properties of the files in the CSC to determine that a self signed EFS certificate (using a derivitive of the machine name) was generated to encrypt the files even though I had my own 3rd party EFS certificate (Native EFS by the way used my 3rd party EFS certificate to encrypt). Under 32bit Vista Ultmate, I can no longer see the file properties (not in the context menu) in the CSC to see if the encryption works the same as XP. Does anyone know how to get to see…

Reinstalled Vista, now I want to use bitlocker again..what to do about the small partition that is o
by Guest Blake Mengotto- 0 replies

So I had a IE issue on my laptop. It was home premium version of vista. I installed ultimate. I used bitlocker, which creates a 5GB partition. I had to do a factory restore on the laptop and install all my apps and SP's. So now I am back with Vista Ultimate SP1. Now, I want to enable bit locker again, however, will bit locker see this small partition that is on my disk and use it or will it create a new partition? I hope it can use the one it created before. Thanks, Blake

Access denied to MA Access DB
by Guest Lu Powell- 8 replies

I got an email from my brother with a problem I can't resolve. Here's the gist of it: "I am trying to get at a database I created under Access. Vista will not let me open it. I had a problem and saved all my data files before reinstalling Vista. After reinstalling Office 2003, which includes Access, and then copying the file back to my C: folder, I get a message that says I do not have permission to access the file and that I should contact the administrator (that's me) or the creator (that's me). I have all the permissions for the file, but apparently there are Access permissions that I cannot set since I can't open the database." The database f…

Bitlocker on a New Laptop

I recently purchased a new laptop and have a copy of Vista Ultimate (from the Server 2008 launch event). Although my laptop isn't connected to a domain, I'm wondering if it's a good idea to implement Bitlocker on a personal laptop for data protection and such. Appreciate any thoughts/suggestions.

automatic updates not working

Hi can anyone help me with my automatic updates not working? I have vista home premium edition 32 bit. Last time I was able to update was 7/20/08. It's a new laptop which I use as a back up computer. Have only turned it on 3 times since above date. Yesterday I could not download any updates. I get a blank screen that says searching. Nothing happens. Computer works fine otherwise. Then I have to go to windows task manager to close the updates because it will just sit there and spool. Internet ok. I know for sure that no virus is on it. I tried to manually download updates but the installer just says "processing" or something like that and nothing happe…
