loosely coupling manifest file in VC6
by Guest Pointer- 2 replies
Hi all, We have started porting our application to accommodate vista security changes. We have a unique case. A particular exe can run in both server environments like windows 2003/2008 server and clients like xp/ vista. In the server env we want to run the executable as an administrator but in the client environments it should be run with invoker privileges. Is there any mechanism to loosely couple the manifest file with the exe. i.e i dont want to embed it using the resource files. i have tried to use it by placing the manifest file in the same folder as the executable. the name of the manifest file was "myexe.exe.manifest". Any help would be greatly appreci…

What to try when you get a "won't run" program error:Turn DEP off!
by Guest surfer100- 1 reply
For the last several months I've been getting "won't run" error windows for HP's My Display software, for Vueprint graphics program, and for another program. I I was getting the same error message for each... A window would pop up and say "program X won't run" but DID NOT SAY that it was a conflict with Vista's Data Execution Program. I found out ultimately by lots of repeated googling. I turned Data Execution Prevention to OFF, execept for essential windows services by going to control panel, click on system, click on system protection, click advanced tab, click settings, click data execution prevention tab, and finally click on "turn on DEP for …

I'm running Vista Enterprise SP1 and am up to date with the updates. I have office 2007 installed as well. I installed the Community Clips for Office to generate some help videos. I can't record becuase I do not have access to a particlular CLSID. I've tried under 3 logons: 1. my logon id and I am a domain administrator and an administrator on the PC, 2. superuser, the account I added during Vista setup and the account I did the install of CC for O and ran it for the first time, and 3. the built-in administrator, which I had never used before Under all of the I get an error accessing a CLSID of 80040150, which is lack of permission. I cannot access th…

I get this security event a lot on Vista 32-bit SP1: "Code integrity determined that the image hash of a file is not valid. The file could be corrupt due to unauthorized modification or the invalid hash could indicate a potential disk device error. File Name: \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Windows\System32\fveapi.dll" This file is located in two places on my system, and it seems the same in both: C:\Windows\System32\fveapi.dll C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\f7fd361ee72a8e86a63bf6b0eb2d2503\x86_microsoft-windows-securestartup-core_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18000_none_34daa5e8f21ef8d2\fveapi.dll Version: 6.0.6001.18000 Size: 173056 bytes SHA1: b8…

I have gone to "Control Panel" and selected "system" and turned automatic update to automatic and set a time to that it should happen at every day. I have also gone into "Security Center" and tried to turn it on, but it says error:1058 and won't let me. I've even gone onto windows.com to scan computer for updates, but won't allow me to without having automatic updates on. And then it gives steps of how to do so....clicking on START and clicking RUN typing in services.msc to change all 3 things of what it says to to get automatic updates to turn on. NOTHING HAS WORKED, PLEASE HELP ME!!! I've defragmented and cleaned disk for the computer, upgraded my virus…

W97M/Marker.T Virus found by Forefront on file server
by Guest Sandy Wood- 12 replies
I'm posting this here because I'm not getting any response in the Forefront forums. (What happened over there? They used to be so responsive? Maybe the new look) The Forefront client has discovered W97M/Marker.T on one of my file servers. I've chosen to have it removed by FCS and it's now in a state of "Taking Actions....". This has been going on for a hour now and the System Event log is filling up with FCSAM Information events every 15 or so seconds saying FCS is taking action. How long should I wait for this to finish? -- Sandy Wood Orange County District Attorney

csrss.exe causing problems.
by Guest Frank Martin- 9 replies

I have WindowsXP pro. I first noticed a problem when I was unable to connect to my ISP most of the time, even though the "Windows Task Manager" networking tab, and the graph there, showed a lot of traffic leaving my computer and nothing coming in. Various virus scanners did not fix the problem. I downloaded a "TCPView" and noticed that when the problem occurred, numerous entries of "csrss.exe" occurred and the location of this was in C:\Windows\Config, and there was another file in this folder called "supdate.exe." When I close down the "csrss.exe" file in the TCPView window the problem disappears and my internet connection works OK. …

by Guest Morton- 5 replies

Hi, I'm running Vista Home Premium with SP-1. I just deleted Norton 360 with Norton's tool, and installed Avast antivirus. Now, I keep getting on-screen notices that Windows Firewall is turned off, = a security risk. I know that the 2 programs have differing functions. Having an antivirus program on,and Super AntiSpyware too, do I also need Windows Firewall turned on? Thanks. Morton

AVG8 loads avgrsstx.dll inside of each loaded process i.e. in every process there's a pointer of 4K to avgrsstx.dll (It uses 4K x number of processes). Why this horrible design in AVG8? NB. Use SysInternals Process Explorer to see these DLLs injected on all processes!

Spybot -- Ad-Aware
by Guest t-4-2- 8 replies

Hello everyone, I had just updated my Ad-Aware from 2007 version to 2008 version ( free ). I started the Spybot and the following warning appeared : ( see screenshot link ) 'ImageGrotto: Free Image and Screenshot Hosting' (http://imagegrotto.com/view-Capture19051.JPG) Basically it warned of possible incompatibility between the 2. I had no such warning with the 2007 version, and I can't get my 2007 version back. So, should I just ignore the warning ? Thank you. -- t-4-2
