by Guest deeranwith- 1 reply

I currently have a system with Windows XP operating system and Office 2007 installed. I will be updating to Vista soon and will carry out a full re-installation after a re-format of the HD. Are there any issues with the activation of my copy of Office 2007? Do I have to formally un-install it to allow the software to be re-activated? Guidance please.

Exellent explanation Jimmy. Thank You. I now, after months of using Vista and hours of searching the net, understand the basic reasoning behind all my suffering. It makes a lot of sense and I will definitely make myself a seperate user account for daily use. Having said this I do not believe Microsoft is going to get the everage Joe to go through such a steep learning curve. Also, giving a program temporary administrator rights does not work with my very first attempt on Explorer. A numeber of files and folders have either been hidden, deleted or placed elsewhere by Vista when re-directing the documents and picture folders to another drive (following direc…

i have Vista and is Microsoft doing anything about letting an admintrator user have parental controls. there are more than one adminstrator on our pc. Right now only standard users can have controls on them, but this limits them to control their pc as an adminitrator. All I want is to control their access to the internet, they shouldnt have to get permission everytime they want to delete a file etc. I want restriction only for internet related access but want them to be able to have liberty as an admin for other applications etc.

How to show Windows Credentials Prompt
by Guest pascal- 1 reply

Simple question, already searched but really nothing found. When I try to access a network resource - of a server I not yet have authenticated against - I get a Windows Credentials Prompt. I'm developing an .net application that needs to access a network share. Is there a .net or WinAPI call I can make that shows this Windows Credentials Prompt and gives me back a token so that I can Impersonate that User to access the network resource? Without this i get security exceptions and can not access files. Impersonation by using a Token through calling LogonUser API (with user password given) works. But i would prefer showing the Windows Prompt instead of doing …

Launching specific program with elevated rights from standard user
by Guest Casey Moore- 4 replies

Okay, here is the scenerio: There are several programs (games) that my children want to run. However they are written so that they need to be launched with elevated rights. I don't, however, want to grant admin rights to their accounts so I find myself in either the "find a new game to play" mode, or "okay let me come provide my login when prompted so you can run your game logged on as you" mode. What I'd like to do is set up a way that once I know a specific game is okay (used loosely), to create a way to automatically provide admin credentials when needed just for that application. I found this article: http://sbs.seandaniel.com/2007/05/how-to-…

I want to be able to independently control notifications for firewall, malware, updating and etc. You could do this in XP and I don't see why it should be difficult to arrange in Vista. I want notification but don't want to see the Security Alert Icon in my tray unless there is a problem. PLEASE FIX THIS MICROSOFT. <whew... that feels better:)>

Firewall etc 1 2
by Guest jo5030- 38 replies

Can anyone comment on the effectiveness of the MS supplied Firewall and Defender offering when compared to other commercial products (such as McAfee and Norton)? I use Norton at the moment, and it seems to me that if one is offered through Vista for nothing, I may as well use it rather than pay for another?

Need help with Remote Desktop Conenction
by Guest MR- 4 replies

I am able to create a VPN connection from home to my network at work. However, I am not able to create a Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) to my computer at work even though I am on the VPN. My home computer is part of my home domain. If I try to create the RDC from home with another computer that is not part of the domain, I am able to create an RDC. If I try to create an RDC with my notebook (that is also part of my domain) when I try to connect from somewhere else, like a hotel, I am also able to create an RDC. I get the same results with computers that are XP or Vista. At home I am using ISA Server as my firewall. the domain controller is W2K3 Enterprise.…

What are the risks of running MBSA against remote computers? I can't find enough details on how it works to feel 100% safe it won't reboot or blue screen any computer I scan. I normally do WMI queries against QFE, is that what MBSA does to check security fix levels?
