Downloads denied
by Guest MalcolmC- 2 replies

I was infected with Antivirus 2009 last week and spent time cleaning it out and upping access levels. My laptop is also used a lot by the kids so this was necessary. Now anytime I try to download a file I get one of two errors. If I try saving it all looks fine until the download is complete and then I get an error saying "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy this file" - I am the adminsitrator so why can't I download it? If I try opening the file the error is simply "user does not have access privileges". Have rolled back to an earlier restore point, have reset default security values, looked in Windows Defender, Firewall, etc. and my…

Use of Kerberos unreliable, can I force it?
by Guest NoelByron@gmx.net- 1 reply
Hi! I had to learn that it is easily possible for clients in our network to work without Kerberos (tickets). Mostly because they boot their computer without a network connection. Those users have no Kerberos tickets (of course) but they don’t get Kerberos tickets even after connection to our network (bug or feature?). There are also some other scenarios in which Windows relinquishes Kerberos. The problem is that we have some web applications that require a Kerberos ticket. My question: How can I switch on Kerberos as soon as they connect to the network? Or how can I force Kerberos authentication in a web application (SharePoint). Integrated Windows Authent…

Annoying virus - can't tell what process it's associated with...
by Guest lilone- 2 replies

I caught a virus on my computer yesterday. It brings me pop-ups every now and then and it has been really annoying. I scanned my computer using Spybot and Symantec Antivirus (with the most updated definitions) and deleted whatever they found. Symantec found a virus called "Downloader" which I think I have seen before. It is saves as an htm file. Symantec automatic scan in the back pops up every now and then saying it found that virus and it cleans it sometimes but sometimes it can only clean it partially. I have tried to match up what I see on Windows Task Manager and Sysinternals Process Explorer but I don't see anything strange or maybe I just can't …

Issuing CA - Common Name?
by Guest BillL- 3 replies
Hi, Our MS PKI environment currently includes 1 offline root CA and 1 online enterprise issuing CA. We want to add a 2nd enterprise issuing CA for redundancy. I believe that this 2nd issuing CA should have a different Common Name than the 1st issuing CA. It's not clear from the documentation that I have looked at. Is this a correct assumption? Thanks, Bill

BitLocker & boot issue - Big trouble
by Guest Bryan W.- 2 replies

I encrypted my hard drive with Bitlocker, since I am unnecessarily paranoid about my information. However, this has now caused a problem, since updating my HP QuickPlay buttons (buttons that allow you to boot right to a media player rather than windows), has caused the laptop to no longer boot, giving me a "Cannot Read disk. Press ctrl+alt+del" message after displaying the HP logo screen. I believe that the fact that quickplay boots outside of the OS has something to do with this, and is hampered by the encrypted drive. When I insert my Vista Ultimate x64 disc and head into the repair menu, i am able to see the drive with the command prompt (performing a "…

Hello, I've been unable to find out why the Update Root Certfiicate component is auto deleting an auto installed 3rd party root certificate. Any help with the following closely related questions would be much appreciated - In what circumstances does URC automatically delete a 3rd party root certificate? - Are such automatic deletions specific to Vista? - Can such deletions be disabled (without disabling URC?) For example, a Vista laptop obtains a certificate on the 2nd of July, but the certificate is automatically deleted on the 3rd of July. Here's the application event log extract. Level Information Date and Time …

can't download file - "you need permission"
by Guest sonar1313- 14 replies
I am trying to download a game file I bought. It is an .exe file. No matter what folder I try to save it to, even if I try to save to a flash drive, the computer tells me "You need permission to perform this action." I can "Try Again" or "Cancel" but Try Again only brings up the same message. I am running from the administrator account. I have already tried shutting off User Access Control. How am I supposed to give myself permission to do this?

Is MS being pressured to retract the UAC feature from the next ver 1 2
by Guest SPEnthusiast- 33 replies

Please take a look at this: http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/2008/07/11/3541592.htm Numerous articles like this have appeared on the Web about businesses and government organizations not wanting to deploy Vista in their environments. The one above is about the FAA not wanting to do so, and I read one article recently about Intel not wanting to deploy Vista either. It has become common knowledge that security features like UAC and Windows Defender in Vista have put a lot of thieves out of business. Obviously these people have a lot of influence, if they can convince the FAA, Intel, etc. that Vista is bad for their employees. And now the consensus that th…

going back to Win XP pro
by Guest Lester Stiefel- 6 replies

I have to revert to XP pro. Her are the reasons. There are several programs where I need to use the company help page to contact them - Vista blocks these, making it impossible to contact them. There are two more programs which will barely function under Vista, but will be fully functional under XP pro. Since I am on a limited budget, I cannot upgrade to the newest version. I am also in poor health. I call Vista a "BAD" decision. I will complete this reversion in the next week. -- Visit Family Radio Today http://www.familyradio.com/

by Guest Collette- 2 replies

I use Windows Defender and spybot. Everytime I try to do a scan my computer shuts down before the scan is complete... often within a few minutes of starting scan. I need to be able to do a complete scan. I have noticed my curser jumping to some bizzare spot while I am typing, but nothing else unusual.
