Control time limit of cached credentials
by Guest Mike H- 4 replies

Hello, We have a few laptop users with logins to our AD domain. They are sometimes offsite for quite a while. Eventually, they can no longer log in with their domain credentials. Our help desk then has to walk them through setting up a local profile so they can work. Is there a way to set this so the credentials don't timeout? Or is there a way for them to be able to authenticate remotely to our domain? I already went down the route of using our VPN client but that is not supported. Any help would be appreciated. We'd prefer not to have to give these people local machine accounts. Thanks, Mike H

Can't restore Windows Explorer!!
by Guest DaveFash- 2 replies

Bought a new laptop that had a disk crash. They replaced the hard-drive and shadow copied info from old to new hard-drive. Unfortunately, the Windows Explorer file was corrupted and the explorer would not startup -- so I copied a new Vista's Windows Explorer from another laptop and planned to copy it over. File write-over denied. So I went to Task Manager, killed the explorer -- and had Command Prompt setup -- since desktop functions became disabled. Command Prompt was opened "As Administrator" and I found my self in the c:\windows\system32 directory -- where I had file permissions to copy-over. But, when I tried to copy the new file into the c:\windows d…

Data File - lock issue
by Guest Stephen Cummings- 3 replies

I am an IT administrator for a company and we have issues with one of our Domain Controllers. It is a Dell Poweredge Serve - Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP1- We have a Data Drive (5 hard drives - raid 1 and 5 array's) - with data for all our departments - with file permissions. There are certain file(s) within a folder structure that we are unable to delete. It happens from time-to-time - Every few weeks I come accross a file/folder that we are unable to Delete, Rename or Cut. Does not seem to be a file permission issue as I have removed permissions on the file we are currently having problems with and put in Domain admin and administrator to full…

How to programmatically modify the users full control
by Guest Happs- 5 replies

Dear, Forgive me, if I have posted in wrong forum. Please point me to the correct forum for my enquiry below. As we are updating our program and installer to support Vista, we need to programmatically modify the windows folder's Users rights. For example: - We created a folder under "C:\ProgramData\Test\" and store some files which our program need to update when it runs. - Works fine in Administrator mode. - In Standard user mode it does not work as the folder does not have the full rights. If we go to administrator account, select the above folder, right click to select Properties, Security tab, select Users and apply 'Full control' then works fine …

Workgroup clients can access domain shares
by Guest Jamesgang- 1 reply

I have a sbs 2003 running DHCP. The Guest account has been disabled. I verified this by the net user guest command. All share permissions seem to be working fine within the Domain and the Everyone group is not listed. I have one NT machine that is on a Workgroup and gets its IP from the sbs server. It has access to all shares with no apparent restrictions. Any ideas or direction would be great.

How to enumerate dictories where auditing is enabled?
by Guest Claude Lachapelle- 0 replies

Hi! We are in the process of enabling auditing on some files servers, but it seem somebody already did it in the past, since as soon as we are enabling it in the local security policy, we got a lot of events about directory being acceded successfully/failed in the security log. Now the question is : how we could enumerate all directories where Auditing have been already enabled? Thanks. Claude Lachapelle Systems Administrator, MCSE

unexpected directories created
by Guest posted.gigs@gmail.com- 3 replies

I've been assigned an issue on a customer PC where strange directories are being created in the user's Documents folder in Vista Home Premium. The mystery directories are in the form of (a few Chinese chars)/Microsoft/Office. There are no files, just the top level directory with the two underneath it. The top directory name has different Chinese characters in each folder name. Anti-virus doesn't flag anything. Any ideas? I've never seen anything like this before.

Afterward, i can no longer connect to the net unless I disable my Zonelabs with Anti-Virus firewall. It never given me any prob until the latest Windows updates. I'm posting this message with my Zonelabs firewall disabled. What is wrong? Thanx in advance. Francis

Permissions -- Unique Issue
by Guest David- 2 replies

Re: XP-Pro. Only one user Account -- Admin. I have an Application("exe") which contains a DLL that is registered in :\windows\system32". The DLL provides a link to an Enterprise server and was NOT written by me. My Application ("exe") is in "c::\myprograms\test". Is there anyway to set directory permissions to make sure any unknown functions within the DLL cannot get outside of the directory? If so, how, and which directories? In other words I want to make sure the Enterprise server CANNOT use any functions within the DLL to access anything on the client other than providing the read/write data link.

by Guest ClayJR- 2 replies

this is my first ever post, and I am an average user, so please be patient. I have a problem with NIS2008 and Vista HB. Norton has worked on the problem and reports it is a windows issue. I have 2 user accounts. One admin and one standard user. Norton comes up and runs live update for the administrator. But it will not update for the standard user. i am told this is a permissions problem. When it tries to update the standard user the admin permisssion window comes up. and even though I follow all the instructions (enter my password) it does not allow me to run the live update for the standard user. This problem did not exist using NIS 2007. I have loaded …

Templates not showing in Web enrollment
by Guest Gunna- 5 replies

I have a problem where I seem to add a template into the Certificate Templates folder on my Root CA but it doesnt show up on the web enrollment server. I have a theory that this might be becuase the Root CA is an Enterprise CA and the issuing server running web enrollment is a standalone CA. Setup this way for "security" reasons and i was lucky to inherit. Is this the reason? if so how do i get those templates copied over to the web enrollment server?
