Crimeware

Crimeware is still in its infancy with regard to the evolution of malware, and does not have an official definition. However, as its name implies, crimeware is malicious software used to initiate a crime that is typically Internet-based. During the past two years, crimeware attacks have increased at a far greater rate than the normal virus. International gangs of virus writers, hackers and spammers are joining forces to steal information and collect huge profits illegally. Read here ........ and review the graph! http://www.kaspersky.com/crimeware So ............... just how is it being done? Dave

Security Newbie questions bearshare
by Guest Flick Olmsford- 2 replies

How much of a risk is bearshare to our system. A few of our users like it but I have questions. We have one Windows Server 2003 and 50+ XP workstations, 5-10 Windows 98SE Can hackers use it to break into / steal info from our system? Can someone break into our network if someone is not logged on? Can someone navigate wherever they want in our network or are they locked into one directory? Can people use it to install spyware / malware /etc? Is there a risk of copywrite violation? Thanks in advance. Flick

PCCVScan has stopped working - Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security version 14
by Guest go-to-lady- 7 replies

This is about Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security version 14.6 on my Dell Vista Home Premium SP1 computer. I bought this program with my Dell and it's good until July 2010. Has anyone had the problem of "PCCVScan has stopped working" and resolved it? I run the scan for viruses and it stops after a short while (it varies from a few minutes and longer) and displays that error message. Is Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security version 14.6 an all-in-one antivirus, antispyware and firewall program? They told me I had to turn off the windows firewall. They also told me to turn off Webroot SpySweeper even though I bought it with my Dell and both were p…

Firewall issues on dual NIC server
by Guest Scott S.- 5 replies

I've just setup a new Windows Web Server 2008 machine. I installed the OS and joined it to my domain, setup some shared folders and copied some files on to it. I had it running really well on the LAN. Then I insttaled a 2nd NIC which I connected directly to our external router and assigned it a static internet IP. I could see the preliminary "under construction" website and things were looking good. I then ran a port scan on the external IP and it had lots of stuff open. I went into "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" and found LOTS of rules to allow "Core Networking" and "File and Printer Sharing". The Core networking stuff looked fine, but the "…

cannot view Html File
by Guest Susan- 4 replies

I received zipped files via FTP. I extracted them and brought them to a C:folder. I have three choices: a CD, a Web or a LMS version. I cannot open any of the key HTML file in them. The choice is either player.html or index.html. I can view the source code but keep getting blocked. I tell Vista to allow blocked content. Nothing. I am the administrator. I started fooling with the Active X and Scripted security features since this is the warning I receive when trying to open the HTLM file. I enabled everything you aren't supposed to, received the dire warnings but still cannot access the content. I put everything back to default (because the dire …

Hello all. I need to convert my old InstallShield project to work under Vista for Standard User account. But I really don't know how to perform simple tasks like create some keys in HKEY_CURRENT_USER or install/delete files to My Documents for user running installer. There is Admin rights UAC prompt at the beginning and all actions now are related to this admin account. But i need user account registry path and user documents path. Not admin's. What can I do? How can I access registry and directories for current user? Thanx for any help -- Raptor

I use acronis to backup and recover the system and partitions, but sometimes I found that the image has been corrupted in one of the partitions. Now I placed the images on one external hard disk which is IDE but attached in the USB box. Acronis told me that I could not recover these images unless I use the rescue bootable media. What are the pros and cons for placing images of backup on dynamic hard disk?

A new Windows Update from Microsoft has added "Windows Software Protection" to my computer. I hate this thing!!! It does not allow me to have a moment in peace. Every 5 minutes or so this thing pops up saying that there was a unwanted change or something like that. This thing is so annoying! Is there a way to fix this? In order to remove exectued malware, reinstall your operating system 1 2
by Guest Thor Kottelin- 34 replies

Instead of replying to every single "I have a virus" post, I am going to say this once. The best current practice for cleaning up a system on which malware has been executed is to reinstall the operating system cleanly. Vendors will offer you software, bells and whistles to no end, but the only way to be certain that your system is clean is to reinstall it. Of course you need to do this in a way that does not repeat whatever you did in order to have the malware installed in the first place. You do need is a good antivirus and firewall product to continuously protect you from intrusion attempts. This is absolutely vital. In addition, your virus scanne…

EFS corrupts files
by Guest tommazzo- 4 replies

Hi, I recently reformatted my computer and installed Windows Vista Business. I decided to give the encrypting file system a try and selected the Documents folder and the folder, where Outlook stores the .pst files, to be encrypted. Then I transferred the data I had backuped to another computer over the network before the format back to my HD (again over the network), directly into the encrypted Documents folder. When I launched Outlook to import my saved e-mails it said that the Outlook.pst (not the backup, but the file it had created on the first launch before I had applied the encryption) file was not a valid personal folder file. So I restarted Window…
