Enable reversible encryption for a specific user.
by Guest study- 5 replies

The default domain policy's password policy has "enable reversible encrypted password" disabled and since there can be only one account policy per domain, this one takes precedence right? I found this though "To enable reversibly encrypted passwords for a specific user you can modify their User Properties -> Account options -> enable Store Password using Reversible Encryption. You must then reset their password." Does this work? I thought that the defaul domain policy's password policy always takes precedence and will win if there's a conflict with another setting such as this. Thanks.

Re: Windows Defender Defenition 1.35.716.0 failed to install.

[Crossposted to Windows Update, WinXP General, and Security newsgroups] I have reproduced this problem (error 0x80070643). Users may encounter this problem when updating Defender via Automatic Update, Windows Update, or from within Defender (Check for updates function). NB: Defender will NOT be happy and its "Alert!" icon will continue to appear in Notification Area until an update is successfully installed. This does NOT mean that Defender is not working/protecting your machine. I have alerted MS and the Defender team to this apparent bug via private channels. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since…

Allow outbound ICMP for specific programs only
by Guest Rotaluclac- 0 replies
Call it paranoia - I set up the firewall to block all outbound traffic by default, and to allow traffic only if it meets a rule. I experimented with ping and tracert from the command prompt. Normally, they both don't work. When I create a rule to allow outbound ICMP traffic, they do work. That's what I expect. Now I change the rule. Instead of allowing outbound ICMP for -any program-, I change the program to C:\Windows\System32\PING.EXE , and I leave the ICMP part as it was. I expect that ping still works, but that tracert doesn't. However, neither ping nor tracert works. WHY? To state my question differently: is there a way to allow outbound ICMP for pi…

Help----Permission problems

I have a dedicated server on a rack with fasthosts running sql, mysql and access. My main database is access. I have just had a new section built to my site that uses sql. The problem is that ever now and then (sometimes twice a day sometimes twice a week) the site demands a username and password from new visitors. When I look at the server the permissions seem to have disappeared and I have to reapply permissions across the server. This is having serious consequences on my site which is regularly used. The problem has only started happening since I had the new site section built and sql installed. The sql is a shared version available though the hosts…

SYM_REGISTRY_BACKUP.reg Question
by Guest Paputxi- 4 replies
I just noticed a file in C:\ named SYM_REGISTRY_BACKUP.reg, dated 4/22008. It is quite large (223MB) so I wanted to delete it to free up some space. Searching the Internet, I can't tell if it is part of a virus or it I can safely delete it without breaking some legit working program (assuming it is not virus related). I scanned it with Norton and it says it is ok. Does anyone know anything about this file? Thanks in advance.

Vista Backup security
by Guest Bob- 7 replies

I backup my computer using vista backup. It is not an image backup since image backup is not available on OEM Vista Home Premium. I currently backup to USB hard drive. I am going to experiment with backing up to DVD RW. Is there any automatic or default security built into these backups? If someone steals my USB hard drive or DVD that contain my backups can they access all the data on them? If there is no security in vista backup, what do you recommend I do to secure my backups? Background info: I have a AMD 4400+ 64X2 4GB memory 320GB HD(way bigger than I need) Acer computer (AM3100-U3201A) I purchased new February 2008 running 32-bit MS Vista Ho…

Update on the situation: MS apparently "recalled" the Defender update released on 24 Jun-08. If the Defender "Alert!" icon is still displaying in Notification Area, open Defender and click on Check for Updates. You should get a "No updates available" response and Defender should be happy again (at least if you didn't uninstall/reinstall Defender). -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ PA Bear [MS MVP] wrote:<span style="color:blue"> > [Crossposted to Windows Update, WinXP General, and Security newsgroups] > > I have re…

Admin permission problem
by Guest HTim- 4 replies

We have hired a new Systems Admin. We created his account with the same permissions as I have. All the same groups. He remotes to a server and he can install things on it from a disk or from the internet. If he tried to install anything from the file server he can't. I can with my logon. We blew away his account and rebuilt it. Same problem. We built a test account and same problem. All the old Admin accounts work fine. All the new admins don't. We backed out the most recent updates, no change. Anyone run into this before?

Vista Ultimate Does not Download .exe
by Guest Krumrei- 3 replies

I go to download.com I try to download AVG's latest Free software. It tells me save or run, I try both at first and then Save As ---> in my secondary harddrive. IT downloads all 43MB of the file and then just disappears. No file in the F: drive, no file found anywhere. What is up with Vista? I just upgraded to Ultimate from XP Pro last night, which took me about what 5 hours? And then I cannot even download anything from the internet. I changed all the settings in IE7 and unprotected it and then also I am an admin on the machine? Any thoughts?

Patch applied (MS07-032 KB931213) in which it updates the 'wmi.dll' to a newer version. After installing Vista SP1 it changes the 'wmi.dll' back to and older version, which is vulnerable. Try to reapply the above patch and it say that this patch does not apply to this system.

Access denied as Administrator
by Guest Al- 14 replies

New to Vista (Ultimate). Why, when I'm logged in as Administrator, are there folders on the disk that produce an "Access denied" error when I try to browse them? I thought the purpose of the Administrator account was to provide full and complete access to the computer including any folder/file on the disk regardless of creator/owner status. This is new (and very annoying) behavior since XP Pro. What settings need to be tweaked? TIA.

What functions are restricted to administrator accounts?
by Guest Dave R.- 0 replies

OK, to keep me from banging my head against the wall any more than I have to, can anyone point me to a definitive list of those things that are restricted to administrator users only? Not those that are restricted to administrator users by default (although that would be a nice list to have as well), but those things that there is no way to assign to a non-administrator. antivirus install problems
by Guest Ed- 4 replies

We are running an old CA program for our antivirus here at school. It is called inoculateIT. It has performed well for us, so we've never upgraded to their newer offerings. To install it, you use a remote install program located on the domain controller. I just bought the first Vista computer to try out here and upon trying to install this program, it cannot find the path. When this happened with XP, it was because the Windows firewall was turned on. I have turned it off in Vista and disabled the firewall service, but still get the same message. It shows up in the list of computers in the remote install program's browser just like it does in the act…
