Remote desktop is not secure
by Guest Cnews- 2 replies
I had a consultant give me the fire drill about how our network is at risk because we have 2 people connecting via remote desktop to 1 server. These are set in GP to enforce high encryption level. My understanding is this is secure- and according to the technet article I read- even login credentials are encrypted. Is this correct? Is the contractor just trying to scare us to have hime setup a vpn for $$$. Looking for comments Thanks craig

audit CD /DVD usage on Windows XP professional
by Guest bob78044- 0 replies

I am new to this posting. I hope this is the right place to ask this question. I have a standalone Windows XP Professional system. I am required to audit the access of the CD /DVD usage on this system. I have looked in the Group policy. I have looked at poperties of the device. I have dug around in the registry. Does anyone have an idea how to have the usage of the CD / DVD drive get logged to the security log in event viewer ( SecEvent.Evt). To be more specific, I need to know when a person writes information to the device. Although reads would be nice, the writing is what we are more concerned about.

Security Centre
by Guest The Old Moos- 8 replies

Every time I turn on my computer it tells me that the Windows Security Centre is at risk. I have Nortons IS installed as my Anti Virus program, and I know this overrides the WSC, but how do I stop the Windows icon from showing my computer is at risk when I start up. I read that the Windows SC is only a warning, it does not save you from viruses, is that correct?

I've noticed the default Start Menu has direct links to folders like Documents, Music, and Pictures. More than any of those, I really love my Downloads folder. Is there anyway to add this to the Start Menu? Thanks, - Munchie

Scheduled Defender Scans
by Guest Tom- 1 reply

Seems since SP1 (using Windows Ultimate) that Windows Defender decides at random when to do a scan, in spite of a schedule time that is set at 4 AM. It did a scan today at 7 PM. (I deleted the scheduled event couple days ago, rebooted, and added back in a scheduled event but still scans when it chooses not when I choose)

Disabling Security Center Alerts
by Guest Dilip- 4 replies
Is it possible to disable the Security Center Alerts on Vista (no icon, no notifications) via command line or by script? Turning off UAC by modifying a certain registry entry turned out to be easy (using the reg.exe command line utility), however I can't find a way to do the same for the Security Center Alerts. I am willing to write some scripting code if that is what it takes. Does anyone know?

Complete Antivirus 2008 Removal
by Guest RLund- 4 replies
A few days ago, the Antivirus 2008 pop-up appeared on my friend's new computer. It stated that he had 41 infections. HIs access to the internet was blocked, as well. In order to remove them, he had to pay for the service. After a bit of research, I discovered that it was a scam and attempted to remove it from his computer, via standard means (control panel, programs and features, uninstall). It appeared that some files were removed, but some were left behind. Those that remained still indicated that he had 41 infections and blocked his access to the internet, by indicating that the websites posed a threat. I found this community and the instruction…

Tmcomm errors/Trend Micro/Multi A/V Tool
by Guest Diane P.- 3 replies
Had problems last week with what turned out to be false positives by AVAST. I now have been getting "tmcomm failed to start" , system cannot find file specified errors. A "google" only reveals limited info about this error but it appears to be related to Trend Micro. The only place I have Trend Micro files installed is in the Multi A/V removal tool the Sophos portion of which I could not get to work properly. I could not find uninstall/removal instructions for C:\AV-CLS, presuming that this folder and the contents are the cause of the problem. The folder doesnot showup in in Add/Remove and does not show in CCleaner uninstaller. Perhaps the error is ca…

Windows Security Centre misreporting
by Guest Jonathan Crawford- 0 replies
Hi I am running AVG antivirus(not the free one) and have defender turned on. The other day when booting, I was asked if a windows 2003 SBS file in a temp directory could be run. I assented. Since, the Vista security centre has failed to recognize my antivirus and reminds me that defender is turned off. Defender is actually on. If I click turn on Defender from the security centre, then it spends 5 minutes looking for something then informs me that there "are no new definitions available" to me. There seems to be no way to tell it that AVG is installed. I would be grateful for any advice thanks jc =============== Jonathan Crawford jc@tgsi.ne…

Avast Uninstall Blues
by Guest hogtowner- 5 replies

I have tried to uninstall avast, using the control panel (seemed to work), and then using the uninstall tool from avast (seemed to work). However, the security screen in control panel still shows an avast antivirus running, or reporting at any rate. I do not find anything running that could be avast, when I use task manager to inspect processes. How do I put this bad, bad, bad dog to sleep?

Repeated requests for logon
by Guest Martin- 2 replies

We have recently added some VistaSP1 boxes to our network. All are working fine, but one. We are now unable to go to the dialog box to change DNS/IP settings. (We previosly have accessed this just fine.) We get a logon prompt but no logon works, not the network administrator or the local administrator. It just keeps asking for a logon over and over again. We have installed nothing recently that could affect this (just Office 2007). We are thinking of just blowing it out, and reinstalling Vista. Any other ideas?
