Program Unable to Add to Windows Firewall's Exception List
by Guest Wyman- 0 replies
Hi, I have mounted a disk to an empty NTFS folder - "C:\Program Files\Custom", I then install various applications to that mount point. However, I found that I am not able to add application ( .exe) that installed in mount point to Windows Firewall's exceptions list. It show "Windows Firewall cannot add <application name" to the list of exceptions". For testing reason, I copy the exe file outside the mount point, e.g. "C:\Program Files", "C:\Users\<Username>\Documents", "C:\" and etc, it can then be added to the exceptions list. As long as the exe file is not in a mount point, it can be add to exceptions list! Anyone know what is going wrong and h…

Windows Defender??????
by Guest Stonebow Witham- 5 replies

Can someone please tell me how to activate Windows Defender? I have tried all the assistance listed in this group and still cannot get Defender to work! One piece of advice was to log on to the C prompt as system administrator? I tried to right click on the prompt but there is nothing on the drop down menu that allows me to do this. I would appreciate a step by step guide (for IT illiterate people) as to how this is done. Thank you.

Save file from xp to vista
by Guest Nick Logan- 2 replies
I don't understand what the problem is here. When I attempt to save a file from an xp machine to a vista I get "you don't have permissions". This is the biggest waste of time. I'm admin on both machines. I have admin permission on both machines. I've done all the tricks for permissions and ownership, etc. Why is this so difficult? Don't vista engineers test their stuff? Apparently not. Does anyone know a simple straight forward way to fix this? I really have better things to do than argue with a machine. I'm the admin. I should be able to do anything at anytime with that machine. Thanks....

Securing Windows services
by Guest SC1959- 2 replies

Is there a way natively with Windows to secure a specific service such that a non-admin user can start/stop it but not any others (or have other admin access on the system)? I thought perhaps you could set an ACL on a service but the Control Panel UI doesn't seem to provide for that. If this is not doable by default, are there any open source or commercial products that provide something like this? Thanks in advance.

"security settings do not allow activeX"
by Guest memelon- 1 reply

I have windows vista and windows One Care. I play games on the computer and just recently, games that I have played for more than 4 years suddenly prompt a message that says that my security settings to not allow ActiveX in some programs. I don't use the Windows Firewall, only the One Care since two firewalls could conflict with one another. This is really starting to get on my nerves because the games no longer run smoothly. They freeze up.

SmartSecurity caused my VISTA machine to core
by Guest Uncle Scotty- 6 replies

Help!! The installation of SmartSecurity caused my VISTA machine to core! I cannot boot up in windows! I can boot up in safe mode alone and safe mode with network connections, which is how I am getting this email to you. What do I do now? There is nothing listed as being installed on add/ remove programs, but there is a Start-Programs->Eset->EsetSmart Security with a few things listed. When I tried to uninstall to see if I could get a fresh install going- it said I could only uninstall apps that are installed. I don't know what to do!! Help ASAP, Scott

spyware

When I tried to go to the internet from my computer, it went straight to spywarewarning.mht. Running windows xp. My Norton Anti-Virus shows nothing, my Windows Defender showed some things, had removed a couple, left many. I started up my computer in safe mode, ran both again, both show clean, but the problem remains if I try to connect, and an icon will appear in my tray. What do I do? I have no home internet access since my computer is infected, but could download and burn from a friends computer if needed.

consent.exe not rendering
by Guest bstoppel- 0 replies

When trying to perform a task that requires consent, consent.exe is starting in the task manager, but the consent box is never rendering and the calling program locks up. This is with UAC turned off. Ironically trying to turn UAC back on causes consent.exe to run and security center to freeze. Has anyone seen this issue before, or have any suggestions?

Folder Permission Error
by Guest www.clonxy.com- 2 replies

As you can see in the image at http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/6681/83541130zo4.jpg I can't edit the permissions for every single folder I have. Every time I change everything to "allow" and click ok. it reverts back to the samething shown on the same picture above. This problem is making me lose access to new files that has been created. I can only see these files by opening cuteftp and browsing it there. I hope I expressed my thoughts correctly and you may be able to help me.

Every time I try to download a file from the internet, Windows notfies me that it has chosen to deny access to this file. I have disabled all firewalls and security measures, but to no avail. This is clearly a Vista glitch and I am upset that I cannot even control what I do on my own computer. Any ideas? Kind Regards, Trap

Certificate error
by Guest Philip Gross- 10 replies

I have installed a Linksys WAP4400N wireless access point on my LAN. When i go to it using 192.168.1.245 as per the manual i get a Certificate Error. I can proceed by ignoring the message and do the setup but i think this error is disabling my ability to update the cmos memory on this device. Why would a certificate be needed for a device installed on a LAN? All my systems are Vista. I also have a WRT440N on the same LAN but no certificate problem. How can i get rid of this certificate error?
