The url http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=83730 is being redirected to http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms08-jun.mspx then http://www.microsoft.com/err/technet/secur...n/2008/ms08-jun since at least ~ 17:30 2008-06-04 MST, it may have been down earlier than this. Please fix ASAP, I have tried multiple browsers and ISP's so I doubt it is a client problem!

Vista logon with smart card on local pc
by Guest Michele- 1 reply

My aim is clear, i want to use the enhanced security of the smart card for accessing to a local pc instead of using the usual weak username and password. I know well that to perform this task is easy if you are connected to a domain. When you are connected to a domain you can request a certificate for Vista logon and once obtained you can use the group policy that require smart card for logging on to pc. And after that even if you are not connected anymore to the domain you can use the smart card to securely access to pc at logon since the smart card credentials are cached into the local pc.( I think you can use the smart card always to logon to pc without…

Hi, there is so much information out there and different reviewers offer different suggestions. So what does Microsoft suggest? When I was using XP I had Lavasoft Adaware Personal 2007 and it worked fine. I have heard that Spybot is also good. I understand my system comes with Windows Defender (is that correct) but perhaps I need something else ??? Many thanks. -- Trish

I needed to restrict some directories in my disks to admin-only access, so I cleared the Users and Authenticated Users permissions to the folders using the built-in Administrator account. The problem is after creating a new admin account, the new one does not have access to those folders even though it is part of the Administrators group, and only the built-in admin can still access it. Instead, Vista prompts me to acquire permissions for that account. I reproduced the problem on a test folder, and found out that acquiring permissions via Vista's prompt gives permissions specific to that account. It works, but it's messy when I have to add new admin accounts i…

A user account has the following permissions in a folder off the root that does not inherit permissions: Read & execute List folder contents Read and special permissions of Create files/Write data Create folders/Append data User can create files in this folder because I can open a Notepad doc and save the file her.. But when I right-click and select NEW, only a "Folder" option is shown.. it does not list all the other new things I should be able to create like "Text document", link, word document, etc.. The NEW menu works fine if user has full rights in folder.. This looks to me like some type of bug. dave

I wonder if anyone can assist. I wish to remove some items from the Windows Defender 'Allowed items' - but it will not allow me to do this under my sign in, or that of admins. Indeed the 'allowed items' list doesn't even show any items that have previously been permitted. I have also tried to effect 'sysem restore', but it would appear that there is no safe restore point. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards. -- Jeff

I have McAfee Internet Security Suite. I know how much most of you detest it, but I paid for a three-year subscription and I'm keeping it. Is it okay to leave Window's Defender's real-time protection turned on, or will it conflict with the McAfee?

Files Won't Open
by Guest nofiles- 2 replies

I am suddenly unable to open files in any Office program. The programs open but none of the files. I can see my email but not open it. In Word, I can create a file and save it but when I try to re-open it, it just locks up. I have removed and re-installed the whole suite from my legal CD, run a registry fix software, run Norton, and re-booted a dozen times. Nothing is working. I even have to use a different computer to do this. Anyone ever have these problems? Oh, yeah, and I have Vista

Sorry to dig up an old post, but I am having the same issue here. Vista premium x64 SP1. Same error when opening task scheduler and when clicking on the WindowsCalender folder in task scheduler. No items displayed, not even when "show hidden tasks" is clicked, but when trying to delete the folder or manually recreate the task I get the message that the task does in fact exist. I am hoping someone has a solution by now. -- LPent Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com

I have recently had something called antivirus 2008 show up on my computer. I also just found out a friend of mine has one called vista antivirus 2008. It constantly interferes with the running of our computers bringing up popup boxes stating it is scanning and there are xxx number of problems. If you click remove or fix button it then asks do you want a license and for a fee ranging from about $34.95 on up it tries to prompt you to purchase the license. I am not interested in this, am very frustrated, have tried to uninstall etc....it comes right back within 30 secs and here we go again. Help please if you can. Your time and attention are grea…
