I have Vista Busniess and am domain and computer administrator an this laptop. I have some file located e.g. in D:\Folder\Folder2\file.txt which I can easily edit, rename etc... I have full control of this file. Once I close the file, rename into file.html and open it then with an editor I can't save changes anymore, it says like "File/Device may be read only or open for write by another application". Neither if this is true. Renaming the file back to file.txt allows me to change contetn again, also I can rename the file.html into file1.html, this is possible, just editing the content is not allowed. This is true for any html file not just for one. I have t…

VS 2005 - Remote Debugging FROM Vista PC
by Guest Mike Loux- 1 reply

I'm not a huge fan of cross-posts, but I think these are the two most appropriate spots to put this, so here goes. I am trying to set up remote debugging from a copy of VS 2005 (SP1 for Vista) installed on my Vista enterprise box here at work. The target machine is a Windows Server 2008 VMware machine that I have successfully remote debugged applications on from my old XP box (currently in the middle of transitioning between the two), so I know the permissions are all OK on the remote machine. When I try and attach to the remote machine from my Vista box, I get the usual "The Windows Firewall on this machine is currently blocking remote debugging" message. …

Windows Firewall and portable apps?
by Guest Bruce- 0 replies
I run portable applications often (programs you run directly off of removable media, e.g. USB flash drives) and it seems Windows Firewall doesn't always handle them correctly. Sometimes it works properly, other times it blocks the software, with the block notice referring to an invalid path like "C:14Path\App.exe" (the number changes every time) instead of the correct path of "x:\Path\App.exe" where x is the drive the app is on. Whenever such an invalid path comes up, WF will invariably block the app, even if I add an exception for the invalid path. I've been forced to turn Windows Firewall off because this issue prevents me from using my portable cop…

IAS dropping off

I am having a funny problem with IAS. Every once in a while the wireless wont work and comes up with the "The user attempted to use an authentication method that is not enabled on the matching remote access policy." User error 66 in the system log. When I go into the Remote Access Policy everything looks ok but everything will only come back if I remove and readd PEAP from EAP Methods under the Authentication tab. What is going on with this? Do I need to enable some other authentication methods(have MSCHAP and MSCHAP v2 enabled)? I appreciate any insight you might be able to give.

Need a way to remove a certificate from domain computers
by Guest Mario Lavigne- 0 replies

Hi, We've installed a local Entreprise Root Certificate Authority in our Windows 2000 Domain last year in preparation for the implementation of the 802.1x protocol. I had to reinstall the DC hosting the Certificate Authority last weekend and I had no backup of the CA, unfortunately. Now, 802.1x isn't working properly on our computers because they have a certificate from the old CA which needs to be deleted before 802.1x can work again. Is there any way I can script the certificate removal so I don't have to remove it manually from each computer? I've seen CAPICOM for vbs and while it's working very nicely, I would have to install the package on e…

Access to local machine store

Hi, I have payment system where my web server receives credit card numbers securely (via HTTPS) from customers. In order to settle the amount that the customer owes I have to make an SSL connection to a payment gateway. That second SSL connection needs to be two-way authenticated (the remote server needs to know my identity). I'm using the following C# code to do that: X509Store store = new X509Store(StoreLocation.LocalMachine); store.Open(OpenFlags.OpenExistingOnly); X509Certificate2Collection validCerts = store.Certificates.Find(X509FindType.FindBySubjectName, "mycertname", true); //ssl is my SslStream object ssl.AuthenticateAsClient("server-cert-…

Limiting an application's directory access...
by Guest Ray Mitchell- 0 replies

Hello, I teach a C/C++ programming course and students submit their source code to me by email. I currently have an automated program that compiles their files into an executable, checks their files with PC-lint, then does a bunch of style checking on them. I would like to be able to also run the executables but I'm somewhat afraid to lest they inadvertently (or intentionally) do something like system("DEL /S C:\\ . "). I'm not much of a Windows system type but I understand that there is a way to run an application with limited privileges or maybe to run it as another user with limited privileges. The executables do need to be able to create and…

Since I have Vista Home Premium i am wondering if WindowsLiveOneCare would give the same security that I get from Kaspersky 7 ? The reason Im asking is with having Vista I was thinking that to have all security from Microsoft may be a lot better. Thanks for your feedback an everyone have a safe an happy week.

I have a question regarding the Windows 2003 firewall settings. When I click on the Exceptions tab, I see a list of some of the services. When I click on File and Print Sharing and select Edit, I get a list of tcp & udp ports for this service. How can I create a new service item and add multiple ports under that item (just like File & Print Sharing)? Right now I click Add Port, give it a name and specify the port number. When I have to allow a port range, or multiple ports that aren't in the same range, I create a new port entry. Thanks in advance for any help given.

virtumonde
by Guest Victor- 5 replies

Ok. my daughter loaded a ton of spyware on my pc (just a note avoid myspace layout sites when you can). I got rid of everything except this one called virtumonde. I have tried several posted remedies and none work. Defender finds it and "removes" it but it comes back every time and usually before the machine even reboots. Most postings either say to buy THEIR spyware removal tool which I dont honestly trust, or they say what files and registry entries to delete, but I dont even have those entries or files on my machine. I CAN find some files that seem to be involved with the virus but of course they cant be removed or renamed even in safe mode. …

Multible firewalls report that they are open in security center!
by Guest NavChief84- 1 reply

I have uninstalled a firewall (McAfee Security Center) and used the software provided on its web site to completely remove from a system! I found the solution somewhere before but can not find it and again it was just too simple! If I found it in one of many computer Mags I have then I know someone else as also! After looking all over the net many others have the same problem with once removed security suite software, the only advice given is to go into the registry (very bad advice I would say too many novices). I had to reinstall to manufacture box after an update ruined things and had found solution months ago before redo! Another Q how come turn on an…
