Security problem - Limited user can access administrator file with Adobe Photoshop Album?
by Guest Sven Pran- 2 replies
I have discovered that when I start Adobe Photoshop Album (Starter Edition 3.2) as a limited user it displays not only pictures stored for that limited user but also pictures contained in folders to which the limited user is denied access! I believe this might be a general security problem and should like to know what properties for either (and most likely) the application or the files probably have undesired settings (by default?) The application security properties specify four user groups, two of which seem interesting: SYSTEM and INTERACTIVE, but I do not quite understand what they represent. (The two others are the administrator and the administra…

Moving newly issued Certificate
by Guest CHANGING FAIL OVER CLUSTER TO NL- 0 replies

Hello: I am testing certificates download from a standalone CA Win2k3 server. When the certificate is downloaded and installed on the local client machine (when the certificate was requested, did submit the request for storing the certificate under Computer Account/store), it installs the Trusted Root certificate by default at Certificates (Local Computer)-->Intermediate Certificate Authority-->Certificates since the certificates are issued by a subordinate CA. I will have to manually move the Trusted Root Certificate over to Certificates (Local Computer)-->Trusted Root Certification Authority-->Certificates bin to restore the certificate ch…

OT: Avast and Limited User
by Guest PaulZ- 3 replies

Apologies for posting here , but I've seen Avast! recommended several times and a search of the Avast Forum hasn't really answered my question. I'd like to install Avast on my parent's computer. They run in a Limited User account ( Vista Home Premium ) and I would like to know if all the functions work correctly ? Particularly updating ? Some forum posts seem to indicate that it has to be updated manually ? I would install it using the Admin account of course , but I'd like to know how it runs in a Limited account before I go ahead. TIA

UAC re-enabling itself?
by Guest void.no.spam.com@gmail.com- 7 replies

I turned off UAC on my parents' new computer a couple days ago. Yesterday, my dad encountered some spyware while browsing (he called me over and I noticed that Firefox had somehow gone to onlinexpscanner.com and downloaded a suspicious executable, and there was a prompt to run the program). I am now trying to figure out if any spyware got installed onto the computer. The first thing I have noticed is that UAC is now enabled, even though I had disabled it a couple days ago. How did that happen? Could any Windows updates have re-enabled it?

Check out http://www.pctools.com/news/view/id/206/ It reads in part "Ironically, the new operating system has been hailed by Microsoft as the most secure version of Windows to date. However, recent research conducted with statistics from over 1.4 million computers within the ThreatFire community has shown that Windows Vista is more susceptible to malware than the eight year old Windows 2000 operating system, and only 37% more secure than Windows XP," Clausen said. " Just thought you'd like to know.... jim

Programming questions. Is there a way to insert some information into an EXE file which was signed by SignTool without affecting the file signature? I want to add a track id to the EXE, and while running the EXE it will use this Track ID to notify me of the distribution of this EXE. Can anyone has an Idea how this can be achived? without creating new packages or other stuff, just insert info into some free unsigned structures in the EXE? Thanks in advance, Joe

Hi, The machine I just purchased came with AVG (free). I've read that the Vista firewall is fairly strong. Is there any benefit in me installing Norton 360 v2 or is the protection I get from Vista Firewall and AVG just as strong? Thanks Nick

Can Defender block acces to a program? I want to block kid's access to IE7, and in my old XP computer I could do that with ZoneAlarm Pro. Since I just got a new Vista, I am trying to use all the Vista stuff that's built in, rather than going to another solution. Thanks, Mike

Batchfiles and VISTA
by Guest Syd- 4 replies

Our company have shortcuts in STARTUP, pointing to a batchfile (on the file server), that runs everytime we reboot our machines, copying custom files from the File server to our local computers. In XP it worked fine, with VISTA we have to right-click and select RUN AS ADMINSTRATOR. How can we get the BATCH file to run without any HUMAN INTERVENTION please?

My PC is infected with a virus. It is popping up with "Your system is probably infected with latest version of Spyware.cyberlog.X. When I checked with Process explorer; it showed that one process is running "C:\WINDOWS\system32\advpackf.exe" which has written many entries in Regedit. I have killed the process and deleted all the entries in registry editor, I could find. Strange thing is when I search on C:\WINDOWS\system32\ for the file advpackf.exe even after unhiding all the files. It fails to show up, however if I run the C:\WINDOWS\system32\advpackf.exe from the Run menu, it again starts all the popups and tries to change the start up page of brow…

Reoccuring Rogue

The following two files are always identified as spyware every time I run SUPERantispyware (free edition), which is several times a week. The program then quarantines them and them removes them. Are these serious enough to warrant further action and why do they keep coming back? Rogue.PC-Cleaner HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad#wdpoefan[ {DE8062CC-89CB-463E-AF01-DA85DA065FC5} ] HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad#vadokmxt [ {6F25D4C7-E549-4E97-9B0C-5A3143E59960} ]Thanks very much for whatever advise you can provide.G

I thought computers were supposed to make life easier....

Quoting the classic flic GungHo; ...I don't get, I don't see it..... not one iota. Well, certainly life as we know it would not be recognizable without them... yet as one who is not quite a techno boob, or techphob; but equally I am of the generation where we don't necessarily need or want to know about the labor.... just give us the baby.. To this end, I cannot understand a few things as I have just now lost my server virginity, made more unpleasant by doing the cutover from the age old peer network right about when a ghost seems to have assumed control over my machine, and naturally has spread to the other strung together stations. There is so much…

Program needs Run as Administrator
by Guest Nigel Molesworth- 22 replies

I've got a program that will only work properly if I use "Run as Administrator", despite being logged in as an administrator. Is there a way I can fix this, so it runs normally? PS, I know I shouldn't be running as administrator, but this is a PC that is rarely connected to the Internet, and used for two or three specific tasks.

Access 2003 problems opening under Vista Business...
by Guest Michael D- 1 reply

I have an Access 2003 .mdb file of about 20Mb which has extensive VBA code to help automate the processes. I can use this file in Office 2003 on an XP system just fine. Put the same file on Vista Business running Office 2003 and it has no end of troubles trying to start. The file doesn't have the 'Read-only' attribute set, but it says it has to start in Read-Only mode. Why I don't know. Once I let it start after all the opening error messages (because it can't initialise all the temp tables I create), all the References are there, and all the other options are set exactly the same as on my XP system. Any clues why Vista has to be so officious in not starti…
