Bitlocker makes notebook unbootable
by Guest Paladine- 0 replies
After running the bitlocker drive prep and rebooting my note book (an HP nc8430) goes into an endless reboot cycle. The OS will not load until I run a repair and fix the startup paramaters. Is there some trick to making bitlocker work? I checked the S drive that was made with the prep tool an I see all of the hidden folders including the "boot" folder. I did get the drive encrypted one time but I was still not able to start the OS. When I ran the repair i said that the startup paramates were correct but it still would not start!

Re: Unable to request a Thawte Freemail X.509 certificate

 I found if you use a Windows XP/2000 machine or a Mac with Firefox, you can request a cert, fetch it and import it into that machine, then export/backup and copy to Vista. I was able to successfully import it into Internet Explorer and Firefox and Outlook 2007 to sign emails this way. It is a pain until they upgrade to CertEnroll but works as a temporary solution! On another note, CAcert.org support Vista but you have to import their root certs so not as nice as Thawte is. ~Marcos -- ogdenous

Have been running Vista Home Basic since Mar 07, with updates on download and notify, all up to date, have just checked. Today noticed no icon for Defender in Quick Launch Toolbar, looked to change display view, no icon to select in list. Checked security centre, Defender not running. Used Start, All programmes to start defender. Opened Options, checked for Admin authority and all users, both ticked. Unticked the admin user, selected save change, then reversed the process to add tick, and saved, Defender icon appeared, and almost immediately started scanning system. Whats up doc?? I now suspect Defender hasn't run for a couple of days but not sure. Also, w…

PKI - Manual Enroll - Auto Renewal - Possible?
by Guest DJH- 4 replies
How do you configure a certificate template for Manual enrolment and Auto renewal? For example: I have a web server called “WINSERVER1â€Â. It hosts a website called “coolwebsite.local†I request an SSL from the internal CA called coolwebsite.local. I want that certificate to automatically renew when it expires. Obviously this has to be a manual enrolment as the server would not know how to request some random website name in a certificate. This is what I have configured: I have an AD Integrated Enterprise issuing CA. A version 2 certificate template has been created for computer authentication. Template settings are as follows: S…

Hi there, I set up a Vista with a Administrator, password protected account and then set up a Standard user account but at the moment I find that the Standard user account can delete the Administrators password and account how can that be? What I would like to do is have an Administrators account and a User account with Administrator privileges but I don't want the User account to be able to Delete the Administrators account or password. Is this possible with Vista Home Premium? Many thanks, Tim.

by Guest Bette Boop- 1 reply

I haven't been able to open attachments or download programs. I found out that a file(?) is empty in the Defender program. Mpoav.dll, I think is the problem. Do I need a Defender media to fix the problem? With help I tried to restore everything from back to when the problem started. Since I am not good with the technical end of this, I hope I am describing the problem properly. Any help will be appreciated -- Bette Boop

Protected Mode and Signed ActiveX Plugins
by Guest shalayka@gmail.com- 6 replies

With Protected Mode enabled, our signed plugins no longer operate as they should due to limitations on where they can write files, etc. Is there any way to get around this programmatically, without the user having to disable Protected Mode manually? I must admit that I appreciate Microsoft's continued efforts regarding security, but the entire point of having signed plugins was so that the user could explicitly grant trust to the plugin. Unsigned plugins were not allowed by default in IE6. I'm not sure who thought that was inadequate. - Shawn

Blocked startup programs
by Guest TV-VCR- 6 replies

I think a nice addon to SP1 before it gets rolled out (or SP2, maybe... or maybe just something through windows update) would be the option to tell Vista to not block a certain program on startup. i.e., it blocks Program A and and Program B on startup. Let's say I want it to not block Program A anymore. In the menu that pops up when you right click on the Blocked Programs would be the option "Unblock Program A and don't block this program again". It would be handy. There are a lot of non-malicious programs out there like Fraps that get blocked. ~Chris ---------------- This post is a suggestion for Microsoft, and Microsoft responds to the suggest…

This is a new Vista Home Premium install and the problem didn't manifest until 2nd day after installation. I've seen on the web that the symptom has been reported before and for a long time, though not widespread, and there is a workaround which works but I haven't seen any actual cause or solution. Among the symptoms: -Slow loading home page -Slow or non-responsive IE7 menu items -very slow loading Favorites list -missing content in Favorites sub-folders, sometimes root folders -IE7 menu items sometimes don't display Initially IE7 appeared to work normally when the Vista installation was clean (dual boot with MCE 2005). Windows Vista updates and va…
