Repeated prompt for password

I have a XP ftp server running ServU ftp server version 6. All clients connect to it via the lan: ftp://server or internet ftp://outsidetoserver. Users can browse the folders set up in ServU, and XP users even with IE7 can open a word document for example. However Vista users cannot. They get as far as seeing the word document then when they double-click to open it repeatedly asks for username and password. Even if I type the ServU administrator or the administrator of the box username and password it just does the same. I have tried lowering the security settings of IE7, upgrading ServU to version 7 and nothing seems to work. There's nothing in e…

When I tried to install AVG free, the latest version, I got a message "there is another antivirus program installed on your computer. It is advised to delete this program before installing AVG.8." I have Norton 2002, which I didn`t use for years. What is the safest way to delete it ? I read that some have problems when they tried to get rid of Norton. Thanks

automatic scan 1 2
by Guest janis75- 31 replies

this may seem like a weird question / situation whatever but I have both my windows defender and my anti-virus program set to automatically scan my computer at 2 am on a daily basis. I usually put my computer into hibernation when I am done working on it and for some reason it doesn't seem like either one of these programs is doing what it should be doing. If I actually do a complete shutdown on my computer then after I restart it it tells me that my computer hasn't been scanned in x amount of days. I thought I had everything set up correctly but I guess I may be missing something. Does anybody have any suggestions? I have never had an issue like this. Eve…

Internet Explorer Protected Mode - Permission to save in folder de
by Guest Colinobj- 1 reply

I have Vista Ultimate with SP1, with UAC enabled, and my account is the administrator. I use Ancestry.com for genealogy and when I attempt to save an image of a census page, I get a message saying I don't have permission to save in the folder I've choseen (in my documents), and would I like to save in the pictures folder instead. If I agree to this, I get a similar message saying I don't have permission to save in the pictures folder either. I can work around this by either running IE7 as an administrator or turning off Protected Mode. Neither of these workarounds seems to be the right solution, but I can't work out what I need to do, to give mysel…

INTRODUCTION: (Afterwards, the actual steps to perform beyond CIS Tool suggestions (which will need you to use tools like secpol.msc, gpedit.msc, services.msc, regedit.exe, explorer.exe + more, yet, all native tools to your OS) will be listed for your reference, each in their own post reply, to avoid "clutter"): Windows CAN be secured very well, but, you have to go thru some "GYRATIONS/EFFORT" to do it, but, it IS doable (but not to any 100% levels, because again - new holes/vulnerabilities appear in the OS & its libs + apps, but this gets you closer, if not as close as a body needs to be!). THIS IS GEARED TO "stand-alone" systems online on the internet (Howe…

rogue local policy

I was advised to post here. I have a client who has SBS 2003 r2. On the VP's workstation, he downloaded a cutesy screen saver. Then he removed it. Damage done! He now cant remote into his workstation. Error message is that the local policy wont permit it! I have logged on locally as admin and cant turn off windows firewall (greyed out), which somehow got turned on. Ran all the virus and spyware scans. Nothing. The remote exception is enabled. I think I might have to wipeout his workstation and re-install. Not what I want to do. Any suggestions? Thank You, Corky

stubborn Keylogger !
by Guest RJK- 24 replies

Hi, I've got a XP Pro SP2 machine on the bench that has/had/or maybe still has a keylogger in it. AVG / Ewido scan found it and seemed to remove it, but, I'm sure there's something quite nasty still in there. AVG anti-virus wouldn't install - it's as though something is blocking it from being installed. Adaware didn't really find anything, and seems to be not functioning properly in Safe Mode - it becomes unresponsive. ....and Multi-av - which I copied across in Safe mode from a USB pen-drive = press 1 for the Sophos sweep and multi-av just vanishes. Press (2) for Trend, and apparantly psapi.dll is missing (it's not - it is present in system32). …

Defender won't run at startup
by Guest Rojo Habe- 10 replies

I've just noticed that Defender isn't running, even though the Registry key (HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run) is there. The path specified by this key (%ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide) is valid. I can copy and paste it into a Run box and the process appears in the Task Manager (and stays there until I reboot). If I view the System Startup page in Spybot S&D the key exists. I've actually changed '%ProgramFiles%' to 'C:\Program Files' (without the quotes) to see if it makes a difference - it doesn't. If I view the Startups tab in The Ultimate Troubleshooter it finds the key but shows File Not Found in the Launch …

How to prevent users from deleting Word/Excel files in a Share?
by Guest IsraelC from Miami- 5 replies

Anyone know how to prevent users from deleting files/folders (Word/Excel files) but still allow them to edit and save them? I setup a test share on a Win2K3 Server. Remove all rights for all users except for the admin group. At the NTFS security tab I grant a group Modify, Read/execute, list, read and write permissions. Then in the advance/special permissions tab I enable the deny delete subfolders and files right. I then create a word doc and it allws me to create it and edit it but the temp file dont get deleted. If an Excel file gets edited and saved we get an error the the folder is marked as read only. So at a high level I wnt to prevent users from de…

Bravesentry.com has hijacked my home pc!
by Guest Jen- 1 reply

I desperately need help! This virus has hijacked my pc to make it look like a program has installed on my pc and is scanning my pc for viruses. It comes up with I believe fake viruses and tells me to purchase and download this software to remove it. It changed my windows so now I don't have administrative rights to uninstall anything. I looked in task manager, and can't find any bravesentry entry, but not sure what else to look for. I tried safe mode, but still have no admin. access. I tried to restore to an earlier time, but that doesn't help. It has installed not only bravesentry, but other stuff I can see on my desktop. I called Geeksquad and they said …

Q: NTFS Encryption
by Guest G. Ralph Kuntz, MD, MS- 14 replies

Suppose someone wanted to set up a database and the DB starts as a service when the computer is booted. The database directories are encrypted using NTFS encryption. As I understand it, the secret key for the encryption is "protected" using the password of the account who originally encrypted the files (the encryption key is itself encrypted with the user's password). When the DB service is created, the user enters the DB password so that the serrvice can start and can decrypt its files, without the user having to enter the password every time the machine is rebooted. That DB password MUST be stored somewhere on the hard drive, otherwise the encryption key…

Token validation is inconsistent
by Guest Vishvesh888- 0 replies

Hi, I am having a very wiered problem. I am using kerberos validation. Initially client sents the token to server and sever sends some reply token & demands for next round of validation. And then finally server gives a token that client has to use for further communication with server, handshake complete. This works fine for US AD server, but does not for UK AD server. I am using Windows 2003 server. Please help! Thanks!

Need help with xcals syntax!
by Guest Edward- 0 replies

My problem: I want to grant a user to a folder all accesses except Traverse, Take Ownership and Change Permission. I do not know how to compose command line syntax. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There seems to be two XCALS from Microsoft. One is a VBScript xcals.vbs and the other is xcals.exe from 2000 reskit. The two tools do not have exact syntax. However, when I tested xcacls.exe with a folder (xcacls c:\temp\1 /E /T /G guest:EWD), and open Properties Security tab, I get: --------------------------- Security --------------------------- The permissions on x are incorrectly ordered, which may cause some entries to be ineffective. Press OK to continue and…
